I had to make a stop at the hobby shop on my way to work yesterday. I now have a couple of spare bottles!

Finally, after a dropped/broken airbrush bottle yesterday :-wall :-wall, the ADC grey paint is applied. The next step will be the black nose and several flush antenna/radar panels on the belly.

Now that I've gotten the extra photo references that No.1 posted in Combat Warplanes section I'll be doing a bit more resin casting. The propeller and spinner in the kit don't satisfy me so I'm going to cast a modified SBD unit for this project. It was going to be a quick build but now I think more detailing is necessary since y'all are interested in the little Interceptor.

Excellent photos of the Interceptor!

I must agree totally with Nico--the "Demon" name was added later on. A book I've read pertaining to the Flying Tigers and the Chinese Air Force mentions these airplanes as "Curtiss fighters" but not much more.

Just looking at that tiny fuselage forward of the empennage would give one an uneasy feeling, especially with that huge 1820 hanging off the front of the airplane!

On the subject of the Buffalo--the U.S. Navy, typically for the period, kept adding armor and other equipment to the airplane until they ruined a pretty good design. I've always been fascinated with the success the Finns had with an airplane so unliked in the States.

As I said in my first post, the engine will be replaced for this build. The kit part is pretty basic and I just happen to have an early R-1820 mold that I made for a different project. This photo shows the kit engine and a built-up resin engine from an unfinished Academy B-17B kit (that I need to finish).

Thanks for the reference material, No.1! :-ok

Since the first time I saw a photo of one of these I've been impressed. Over 4,500 feet per minute climb rate is astonishing for the time!

I've mentioned in other threads that I purchased a large lot of models at an antique/junk store several years ago. This little jewel was one of the models in that group.

Here are the contents--the former owner had started the model by painting the cockpit and assembling the wing. I am going to finish it as a kind of "team build" of sorts. I'll add one of my resin R-1820s to replace the kit engine but it'll be pretty simple otherwise.

A request--do any of you have any other photos of the Dutch machines than the more common pictures on the web? I'd like to add markings that are just a little different but accurate.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, the top half of the left wing. Evidently whoever originally owned the kit misplaced it or ? . The wing tree contains all four wing sections and four small ribs but only the one piece is missing. I may end up using the kit for parts but I would rather build it if I can find a replacement part.

Aircraft Modeling / MISSING PARTS

Perhaps we should start a "missing parts" or "needed parts" thread for all our needs. I'm going to start this with a request of my own (of course).

I picked up an MPM SB-2, kit #72047, at an antique store and I am missing the top left wing half. It is item #3 in this photo, with the right half for reference.

If anyone has a spare or can steer me in the right direction to obtain one, I'd be in your debt. I suppose I can scratchbuild one, but the scribing and detail on the original is quite nice and I'd like to build the complete kit.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Ahhhhh......someone finally noticed the tips! :-ok I thought one of you would have caught it in an earlier "in-progress" photo:

I also added the small vents that the FAA installed in the aft fuselage to vent fumes from the cockpit. These took the place of the commonly used tape on the fuel tank seams that you see on many U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Corsairs.

I confess that I didn't modify the cockpit to Fleet Air Arm standards. By rights the sidewall panels should be a bit different and a different seat and harness were used on the Corsair IV. My propeller is correct for the particular airplane I'm building, though some FAA Corsairs used a different blade profile than the U.S. airplanes.

I was painting the Corsair from our Group Build and decided to do this "how-to" for painting glossy finishes.

Many years ago I painted by putting my subject on a stand, placing it on a table or holding it, and spraying away. Sometimes I'd get little bits of dust in the finish unless I was extremely careful and clean. A neighbor was visiting one day when I was preparing to paint a 1/24th scale auto body and he invited me to his hangar. Inside was a full-scale Piper Cub hanging upside down from the roof of his hangar. :-eek He explained that he painted everything upside down so no dirt ever got into his paint. He used gravity to help him keep his surfaces clean. :-tri It's quite a feat to flip over a 1/1 scale airplane but the results were worth it--several paint jobs he applied won awards at aircraft shows, including a Best Of Show at Oshkosh one year. Ever since that day I paint "upside-down". I just make a stand out of safety wire that will hold the model. The rest is pretty self-explanatory.

I also hang the finished product upside down until the paint has cured a bit. I'd rather have any dust settle on the underside during the curing process.

And the finished product:

Tonight I painted the tips and dome of the propeller. After that I hooked up the "good" airbrush and sprayed the blue.

I'm going to add a post to Sall's Modeling Techniques sticky thread showing how I do most of my painting.

Here are two photos of the weapons bay and gear wells that show all the detail. All that is needed is paint.

The missiles need to be cleaned up and painted but I placed them in their launchers so y'all could see how they fit in there.
