I'm still learning acrylics also. I have had the same problems with the airbrush flow on both the Badger and Paasche brushes. When I get the paint thin enough to spray evenly it is too thin for coverage. Practice makes perfect, I suppose!

Not evident to jump due to the engine position, but it was effectively a possibility given to the pilot to jump just before the explosion of the Reichenberg. The pilot have to wait until the engine shut off (out of fuel) and then there were less risks...

Congratulations for the build, mate!

Yes, that is essentially what I remember reading about the procedure.

Nicely done, No.1!

That sounds like a good idea. Count me in for something, either another restoration or a new-build depending on what I can find in my storage.

Ok.Thanks again this is too much modification for my taste.I will do a Overall gray scheme. It could be also good for trying out the salt weathering technique :)

I'll try to find some photos of the cannon installation for you. It should be a straightforward thing to build if you did decide to do the camouflage version.

Me too. It's looking great!

I'm in the middle of reading an excellent book titled Thunder Gods about the Ohka program and pilots in Japan. This build sort of fits into that reading assignment, though I realize the Luftwaffe pilots were supposed to have the option of jumping out of the Fi-103 from what I've been told.

Yes, the new engine and prop will be worthwhile, especially since the CW-21 is basically an engine with a little aluminum tagging along behind it! :-eek Though there is no resemblance, this little fighter reminds me of the Gee Bee racers--all engine and no airplane.

It pays to have the RTV and resin handy for short-run kits like these. In fact, I removed the propeller and spinner from a completed SBD so I could make these molds.

A comparison of the kit engine, prop, and long spinner next to the resin examples that will replace them:

The resin versions are an R-1820-32 and the Hamilton Standard counterweight prop with the short spinner dome that is correct for the CW-21B. The master for these came from an old Hasegawa SBD-2 kit. The propeller blades will need to be cut down to the correct diameter and reshaped just a little, but the hub is much better.

The 106s didn't have much in the way of weathering or scratches--they were among the most pampered airplanes in the USAF fleet. Every one I ever saw when they were operational was nearly spotless. Here's a great compilation of photos!

There are some pictures in this collection of the drones, and other ships just pulled out of storage at Davis Monthan, that are faded and worn appearing.

If you were to paint a Dart in a (hypothetical) tactical scheme I suppose you could use the F-102 scheme as a basis.

The USAF thought about using the '106 in a Migcap/topcover role but it didn't have an internal cannon. As I recall, this idea led to fitting a Vulcan gun in the missile bay. The clear view canopy without a center spine also came from this investigation.

The level of details in those wells is great - also you did a pretty good job in accentuating it :-ok
Speaking of colour, at first I thought I'm seeing bare plastics :-think not that I don't like it, and you did good job in painting it, it's just too dull for my taste :-roll

All I really did to the weapons bay and wheelwells was a light wash of dirty black and painted the various AN fittings and Adel clamps. About the only other enhancement was to drill out some holes in two air deflectors in the missile bay.

The ADC grey is just a little lighter than the kit plastic and it was almost hard to see where the first light dusting of paint was when I sprayed it! These overall grey Air Defense interceptors are pretty boring, indeed. It'll look a bit better with the markings applied but the 49th didn't have a "sexy" tail marking like a couple of the F-106 units had. Honestly, I'm thinking about building another one for my own collection but weathered and painted like the drones expended in Florida.

Thanks, Paul.

The propeller mold is curing as I type this. Next will be to figure out what to do with the landing gear struts and tire/wheel assemblies. Then, on with the building!

Very, very nice..I like it much! :-clap :-clap :-clap
I'm glad to see that you work a little bit more this days on models! :-flo :-tri :-tri :-clap

I usually get time to work on models only on Saturday and Sunday evenings. The weather was so nice yesterday and today I just had to paint the F-106. Now my lawn is getting scruffy looking and our garden (we're eating radishes from it already) is taking more time, but I'm still trying to fit some modeling in during my morning coffee!

Looks great. What color did you used for the overall gray?

Model Master FS 16473 "aircraft grey". It is the actual Air Defense Command color used on the F-106 through its life.

As an aside, somewhere in my piles of reference material I have the official Tech Order for USAF tropical (Vietnam-style) camouflage for the Dart. Supposedly there was a squadron of Darts slated to be rotated into S.E. Asia but it never happened. The F-102s looked quite nice in camouflage!

The RarePlanes kit also gives you the option of building the early CW-21 with aft-retracting landing gear, doesn't it? The drawing shows some details of the first airplane.
