I'd sure like to build the F13 version in 1/48th, but I may need some advice on that one!

August sounds good to me, too. I may have to invest in a better kit than the ancient thing I have here. It's missing the canopy, but I might be able to make one.

PROGRESS! :-tri

I have totally pushed the YB to the back of the bench (literally) but felt pity for it last night. I assembled the left wing halves and prepared them for filling and sanding. I also did a final fit check of the flap. The remaining issues with the wings are to fill/sand/prime the seams, add the scoops permanently to the nacelle tops, fit the engines, mounts and cowlings, fix the landing light bays and re-scribe the panel lines.

Samuraj wins the prize :-obey, though you were very close, Draken! :-flo My plan is to disassemble the old build and restore it as one of the British-operated ATIAU-SEA machines, probably B1-02. I'd considered the bare metal U.S. version but I don't know what the surfaces on the model will look like when I strip the old paint. If it is really nice I still may go NMF.

Here it is before:

Tell us more, Scott...

You know I like unusual, offbeat markings. :-dal Perhaps I'll let y'all make a couple of guesses before I confess!

I have an idea for my old Raiden model that I think might be interesting........

The 24 is really a nice looking airplane with the full cowling, in my opinion.

As to paint schemes for mine, I haven't yet decided which machine to build. I have an old magazine here (somewhere in a box) that has many, many photos of Polish aircraft from just before the War.

Yes, I think it is a very historic fighter in that respect. All things considered, the airplane was bravely flown by the Polish pilots even though it was an older design.

If I were wealthy I would add a P.11 or P.24 to a list of 1/1 airplanes to build from scratch. It seems they would be a fun "warbird" to fly!

This kit came from the "orphan" kit shelf at a local hobby shop this weekend. I picked it up for very little money so decided I could spend some extra time fixing the shortcomings of the kit that I'd read about on the web. It turns out that it isn't really all that bad for the more experienced modelers to tackle, though the Mirage P.11 looks a lot nicer.

The decals are a bit waterstained but I think they'll be salvageable with some clearcoat.

The engine is pretty simple but the cowling is another matter. There is quite a bit of flash and some HUGE sprue attach points to trim. The exhaust inlets are obscured by two of the sprue tags and are pretty difficult to repair. The propeller and spinner are also marred by the sprue attachments. However, with some patient use of the files and sandpaper, all of these problems can be repaired. I intended to use a resin Wright 1820 to replace the kit engine, but so little of the engine is visible when the crankcase fairing is installed, that I'll use the LTD part.

In just a couple of hours of "relaxation" I was able to roughly fit the engine and cowling parts for the first time. More needs to be done, but you can see that it does look like a Bristol Mercury with all that sheetmetal on it.

The final hour or so was spent assembling the wing and taping the fuselage halves together. Here's a photo, I'll offer more information later.

And thanks to LetLetLet for the nice photos of the beautiful museum airplane!

The funny thing about that happening was that I never got to meet the model builder. I wanted to tell him I'd had to fix the decal but never did get a chance to talk to him in person. Incidentally, his model won the class and Best Armor/MV for the show. If we had disqualified it for that Balkenkreuz not behaving it would have been a pity.

Thank you! I really enjoyed the reconstruction of this old model.

The amazing part of those markings was that I could use the roundels and fin flash from the original Otaki sheet that is over thirty years old! While researching 1850 Squadron I realized that I could build at least three different variations of markings for their Corsair IVs--the normal roundels, small Pacific blue/white roundels, or the blue and white with the U.S. style bars on them. All of these styles were used with the same dark sea blue scheme.

Scott, I was myself judge for the IPMS-Belgium contests. When I was in doubt for an element, I always tried to inform myself and, in last resort, doubt was a benefit for the modeller.
But I remember some big errors made by auto-proclamed specialists: one of them said me that an Albatros D.III under Udet's colors was the best representation he ever saw...
...That was an Oeffag...
After that, and other constatations, I decided to never judge again.

It's very difficult to judge a contest even with good help, let alone with such "experten" to give sage advice...... :-smey :-smey I know what you went through! At one contest we were judging a particularly excellent group of soft-skin military vehicles. The best model on the table was a beautiful Sd.Kfz. 222. One barely noticeable flaw--a single decal had started to lift up just a tiny bit (the display hall was VERY hot on the day of the show--nearly 100 degrees farenheit) and I, one of the judges, dabbed a little spit on my finger and laid the decal back down when no one was looking. ;) The head judge of our group would have disqualified the model out-of-hand if he'd seen the tiny flaw, but I just had to help the modeler out. He would have kicked me out of the judging group also, but it was worth the risk. I suppose I "cheated" but the weather, not the builder, caused the issue.

This model depicts KD164, the fourth Corsair IV built. She was assigned to 1850 Squadron, coded "N" and served aboard HMS Vengeance. The model depicts how the airplane looked in the spring of '45. An interesting bit of Corsair trivia is the fact that the FAA still used the centerline tank while the equivalent F4U-1D and FG-1D were using the twin pylons at this time while in U.S. service.

Are the egg-planes accepted? I'm tempted by a Zero or an Eagle...

Yes! The egg planes qualify in my opinion. Heck, the Raiden in my photo looks just about like an egg and it was really designed that way! :-think

Most of the judges that I worked with were very professional and good to work with. As with all things human, there were just a few that were not. Judging local events was not too bad, but being asked to help at Regional events gives you a bit of stress--many modelers are depending on the judges being fair and unbiased and that can sometimes be difficult, especially if you're teamed with the "wrong" judge. Sorry to hijack the thread!
