Luftwaffe Air Force Base Porz-Wahn 50th anniversary

On 12 August 2007, a dreamlike summery day, around 80,000 people found their way to the Luftwaffen airbase Porz-Wahn near Cologne to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Luftwaffen base. Besides beer and sausages the main attractions for the visitors were the new Eurofighter Typhoon and a NATO Awac as well as a MedEvac Airbus, which could be inspected from the inside as well.

50 years ago the military air field and the barracks had been transferred from the British Royal Air Force to the newly formed Luftwaffe. Besides these rather spectacular events there could also be observed an exempted IDS Tornado of Jagdbombergeschwader 31 “Boelcke” with the serial 44+35.

My special interest is in World War I aviation. Particularly in the 2-seated reconnaissance planes and the Siemens-Schuckert Single Seater Types D.III & D.IV. Since March 2008 I am also a subscribed member of The League of World War I Aviation Historians. My interest in this field of aviation was mainly forced by my great-grandfather's war diary which I transcribed from old German into modern German some years ago.
