Junkers J.I
« on: January 28, 2021, 08:52:53 AM »
In 1916, the Inspection of the German Air Force issued a technical task for the so-called "infantry aircraft" for the simultaneous execution of tasks for reconnaissance and storming ground targets. The main requirement was to book the engine and crew. According to this specification, Junkers developed the J. I. aircraft.

J.I was made according to the scheme of a semi-plane made of steel and duralumin. The pilot's and observer's cockpits, engine, fuel tanks, and radio station were protected by 5 mm armor. The Benz Bz engine. The IV could reach speeds of up to 155 km / h with a range of 310 km. Armament — 7.92 mm Parabellum MG14 machine gun.

Despite the fact that the tailplane was eventually replaced with a canvas, the J. I is considered the first production all-metal aircraft. In total, 227 of these attack reconnaissance aircraft were released. The only surviving J. I is in the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa, Canada.
