More work this morning and to regret one problem- I have no clear close up image to see what is this panel? How its look like? Some panels are facing and some are overlapping...

Morane fuselage was of welded steel tube. Rear fuselage was covered with fabric. Front fuselage with welded aluminium panels that fitted on the tubular frame. The Frence named this 'contreplaque aluminium'! Anyway, they could be easily removed from the plane! Fokker D-XXIII used the same. but here rear part was monocoque light-alloy construction!
Just before the war before the all-monocoque construction became routine, this 'contreplaque' technique was widely used.

Thank you  :-wave Now I have final layout of this plane port side and I hope that we will have today first profile. What is interesting is that this type have variation of national markings so this roundel is used on profile is just one of variation. Note detail of pattern used on tail skid cover.

Very beautiful artwork ! Bravo.  :-clap  :-clap  :-clap  :-ok

The blue of the French cocardes is a little too violet.
Here are the official colours for the Armée de l'air, as made by the manufacturer "Pyrolac".

Hi Jicehem,

What an excelente reference chip, very well preserved indeed!

I remember reading a very interesting article on one of the Avions magazines, related to camouflge in the Armee de l'Air, years ago and they mentioned that mixing colours almost in a free-will basis when painting the aircrafts was, if not the order of the day, a very widely accepted and often sugested policy. Can you confirm something on that?

Best regards,

Javier

Hi Javier,  :-salut , hi all,  :-salut

Yes that has been said many times...
When painters had not the original color they had to match it by mixing basic colors. I think that was only for repaired planes because, in general, the planes were painted by the manufacturer, or during the pre-war period (i. e. 1938 to 1939) for the planes which were unpainted and already in units.
But, every thing could have been possible because the French industry seems to have been totally desorganized at the beginning of the war... But I know of no rememberence telling they received unpainted new planes...

Cheers,

Swiss-made MS 406 were different and were Pilatus D-3801 planes...

Title: Re: Morane Saulnier MS.406 C1
Post by: Nico Braas on September 02, 2010, 11:32:21 PM
Sorry, but Pilatus had nothing to do with MS406.
They were licence built by Doflug (Swiss Dornier).
Type was developed further into D-3802 with Me-109 type canopy and D-3803 with Mustang type bubble canopy.
D-3803 was built as single prototype only. Both D-3802 and D-3803 had new all metal monocoque fuselage instead of welded steel tube fuselage coverd with fabric at rearside and 'Contreplaque Aluminium' panels at front fuselage side.
D-3802 was built in small numbers only, but served with Swiss AF until late fifties. Also single D-3803 was used operationally alongside D-3802's
