It look like that twenty were manufactured with Soviet engine but no image... :(

Manufacturing (license) of D-XXI with Shvetsov engines never materialized because plant was overrun by Nationalist troops. Only the single example machine from Holland with Mercury engine ever flew as far as known!

Probably you know this, but I found it on net, for any case. Drawings should be the "spanish" type. I could not find any photo's. :-think

"The Fokker D.XXI in Spain:

1) Profile of how the Spanish built D.XXI might have looked like

As you probably know a Republican delegation had signed a secret agreement for building 25 airframes and 50 wings under licence in Spain (I am still wondering about the reason why 50 wings are mentioned because the D.XXI was a monoplane from the outset and 25 spare wings in case of battle damage seem to much of a good thing to me). Anyway, when the Nationalists overran the factory in El Carmoli, San Vicente del Raspeig (Ribasa, Alicante), they found 50 sets of wings, 25 airframes and 25 landing gears according to Gerald Howson.
Dutch sources claim that the prototype was flown by a pilot named Palacios under supervision of general Herrera.

2) Artist impression of the first Spanish D.XXI

Some sources mention that the Dutch prototype of the D.XXI (FD-322), originally built for the Dutch East Indies and test-flown over there, was shipped to Spain as a pattern aircraft for the 25 aircraft to be built in Spain.
In fact this aircraft was never shipped to Spain and was destroyed in February 1942 during a Japanese bombing raid on Kalidjati airfield.

Most of the available information about the Spanish D.XXI story is already perfectly described on this forum, hereby the most relevant links (enlaces):

Spanish Republican Air Force

    * An agreement was made between Fokker and the Spanish Republican government to build the D.XXI in a factory in El Carmoli, near Alicante. The number of aircraft to be build is not sure, but most likely 25. Probably only one (serialed CF-6) flew before the factory fell into Nationalist hands during the Spanish Civil War. with a second already completed. Some sources claim they were fitted with a Russian M-25 (licence-built Wright-Cyclone SR-1820) engine."

Wonderfull profiles mate! :-obey :-clap :-clap :-clap  what are those shadows on the glass - just some kind of reflection, or the surface irregularity? :-think
Title: Re: Fokker D. XXI
Post by: No.1 on May 07, 2010, 09:40:54 AM
Glass is just my play with various effect how you can make glass transparency effect. I think it is interesting but in reality this could not be possible as well whole plane is cover with thin layer of dust so not much reflection could be expected there. This one is shine like on car show case.
Title: Re: Fokker D. XXI
Post by: Letipapa on May 08, 2010, 04:51:46 PM
But in flight, maybe dust goes away, and the sun is strong up, and it just could be that glass plays some games. ;) :-wave

The top ace on Fokker D. XXI was First Lieutenant Jorma Sarvanto of Lentolaivue 24. His score with the D.XXI was 12 and two shared confirmed plus 3 damaged. All these in eight weeks by 21 February 1940. His most spectacular day was 6 January, when piloting FR-97 (in the photo taken just after this mission) he downed in just four minutes six Ilyushin DB-3 bombers of 6 DBAP. All wrecks were found south of Utti air base on a distance of 45 kilometres. Image bellow show him just landed after this mission.

Book is a Dutch version of the earlier book 'Le Fokker D.21' by Peter de Jong as published in France some years ago by Lela Press. However, there will be many updates and new images. One of the cooperators of this Dutch version is Willem Vredeling, co-author of our Fokker S.14 Machtrainer book.
