Portugal received from the UK a small number of Hawks (called Mohawks by the British) as thanks for using their harbours and airports by the UK. There still was a regular airline between Lisboa and Croydon during the war!
Also merchand and passenger ships had regular routes from UK to Portugal and back.
It was not without risk. Some ships were torpedoed by U-boats and some civil aircraft were shot down or damaged by German fighters.

The tone on the codes and fin flash red stripe certainly look the same. I wondered about the darker grey they used on some airplanes, but I lean toward red as you've painted it.

In one period they used mixed grey but later was replaced in most cases with medium grey, used at bottom.
