It is - and if he had designed the Whirlwind for the Merlin, he might not have had any Merlins to power it, such was the shortage of Merlins in 1940!

What a coincidence...!  :)) This is the book I am working on and I am really looking forward to seeing Srecko's work on this!!

There will be three profiles of Dutch machines:

FR.1 - 11-20, 860Sqn, RNNAS, Soerabaya, 1949

T.1 - 11-12

FR.4 - 008/B, 7Sqn RNNAS, Biak, 1957

But as he hasn't started on them yet, I am open to other suggestions! My only stipulation is that, if possible, there isn't another profile published in another book - I would like to have different profiles where possible.

Love it! I just bought the Classic Airframes kit, now I have to decide what markings to do - you give me too many choices......!

I just finished a great book called Interceptor Fighters of the RAF 1935-45 by Michael Bowyer, which details the development of the Whirlwind. He says that Petter made a mistake in wanting the smallest possible airframe because then it was tied to the Peregrine. If he had made the airframe a bit bigger, and used the Merlin, there would have been greater potential for development - and perhaps the Mosquito would not have been needed!! There was a proposal in 1940 to use the Whirlwind as a PR aircraft instead of the Spitfire, but nothing came of it - that would be an interesting profile!

Another newbie here!

Some of you may know me from my IPMS columns in SAMI, and last year, I had my first book published, the Modellers' Datafile on the Hawker Hunter, which Srecko illustrated so brilliantly! Srecko is helping me with my new project which will be an MDF on the Fairey Firefly, hopefully due out next Spring.

I am originally from Britain - Portsmouth to be exact - but I have lived in the USA since 1993. My intrest in aviation started way back in 1969 when I was 5, and, of course, I also enjoy aviation modelling. I hope I can be an asset to the forum!  :)
