Here is a photo of the cat, this insignia was used by sp.Pz.Abt. 501, the first Tiger unit into North Africa. The cat can be seen on the one photo of 712 with the American officer standing in the turret opening that I posted earlier in this topic.

I'll get a photo of it, it was a black panther. The Kubelwagen that dad drove in Tunisia was also from the same unit, he remembered the black cat insignia and they didn't paint it out on his Kubel.

Jumping forward, the tracks were installed and afterward I added the skirts to both sides. Incidentally, I installed the tracks much like the real thing, by running a string across the top of the road wheels and pulling the track through to the drive sprocket. I really like using these individual track links!

Also you can see that after I finished the skirts I applied some faded green splotches. I've researched Tiger 712 for many, many years and have finally agreed with several long-time researchers that this tank was field-camouflaged to break up the desert tan color. I may be wrong to conclude this and my father never spoke about what color the tank was other than it had the black cat on the forward plate.

Thanks, mates!

Once I was confident in being able to spray the new paints I made up my mind to start on a smaller subject than the Flying Wing. I'd always wanted a very early Mustang so decided to break out an old Accurate Miniatures P-51 and converted it to one of the first XP-51s. If I recall this was the ninth Mustang originally meant for the RAF but taken back by North American for USAAF tests. Not many changes to the kit really, just some minor details had to be accomplished. The main thing was to practice spraying the Vallejo NMF and I was very happy with the paints! I even masked the darker area of metal around the exhaust stacks without being very careful and the paint did not lift, something I'd never been able to do with Metalizer.

It's a long time since I started reviewing the Vallejo NMF, here are a couple of pictures of the experimental stage. I determined to start on a small area of the XB-35 as a way to learn this new paint and the cockpit area is perfect for this. I had to paint window frames as well as painting the anti-glare panel. This all went so well that I was encouraged to continue with the rest of the airplane.

Glad to be back--I have been following your projects but I've been just too lazy to post for myself!

As promised, here is a photo to prove that I am really working on this vehicle....

Sad to say I have two cameras handy but haven't taken any pictures of the Tiger lately--I've been just enjoying the process, I suppose. I promise to take some pictures of this tank and another project I'm working on!

You fellows won't believe it, but I've been working on the Tiger during my knee replacement. I'm waiting on one last item before I post photos, but this project may finally be completed all these years later!!

Yes, a sad day here. Ellen and I worked on that Fortress quite a few hours when she was being refurbished. I don't think we knew any of the aircrew but our thoughts are with their families, friends and crewmates.

Actually I have been building (and even finished the Flying Wing!) but so lazy I haven't taken many photos. I promise to contribute more.....

I love it!

I've got the earlier version with the old TF-33 engines on my mind to build--I have the AMT kit and an ancient vacuform RC-135 that I'll combine one day.....

Thanks, No.1--I've been watching all the time but haven't had any contributions for so long......it's good to have something to review again!

It's a long time since we've added anything here. I can no longer get my favorite Testors ModelMaster paints since Rustoleum killed the whole line, so it was time to start anew with an alternative. I found some of the Vallejo line of metal finishes and decided to give it a try. The subject is an old AMT XB-35 kit that has been waiting for assembly for many years. As odd as it may seem, this is the first time I've really given acrylic paint a test as I've always had ample stocks of enamels and lacquers in the past.

My first step was to spray the extra landing gear doors with various primers to see what happened and how durable the aluminum would be. One door was bare plastic, one in grey lacquer primer, one flat black enamel and one gloss black enamel. Then I sprayed the aluminum over each door set and let it cure, then masked one half of each with Tamiya tape and sprayed another coat of the aluminum. It turns out that the Vallejo is more durable with primer under it as the unpainted doors scratched rather easily. The others all turned out pretty well, with the black primer being the best--flat or gloss didn't seem to be too different from each other.

Next, on to another test.
