Aircraft Modeling / Hasegawa Bf 109G
« on: February 03, 2015, 07:30:42 PM »
I've reached the point where rigging needs to be applied to the He-51, and I simply don't feel like doing it right now. So......I've decided to build a relaxing project again, this time the wonderful Hasegawa Gustav. There is a nice set of Hungarian decals in my collection that will be used, V8+31 being the codes applied. A little time spent to get the start, cockpit sprayed in 66:

If anyone has a photo of the real V8+31 I would appreciate seeing it--the tail markings are a question mark for me. :-think

Aircraft Modeling / Classic Airframes He-51

I was wondering what to undertake for my first build of 2015 and this little biplane kept coming to mind:

Out of the box it came and the very simple construction began. Not many parts here, but some test fitting and trial runs are needed since this is a limited run kit. The parts have some trimming required and larger than normal casting stubs but the plastic is pleasantly soft for the cleanup process. Just a couple of cups of coffee got me to this point:

Aircraft Modeling / Tamiya D.520 Project
« on: December 18, 2014, 12:26:21 AM »
It's time for me to unwind and build something that does not require much thinking on my part. This Tamiya Dewoitine will be completely out-of-box and it is a pleasure to assemble so far! I'm not certain of paint scheme yet, but am leaning toward either a Luftwaffe trainer or French machine from 1944/45.

Here, for review, is the Eduard Sherman:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/EduardShermanMain004_zps35411d66.jpg

First step was to begin lower hull construction. Here the rear hull vertical face and one air cleaner assembly have already been fitted. This is very straightforward and the fit is excellent:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/EduardShermanMain002_zps27bf6ff1.jpg

Eduard has seen fit to include an excellent PE sheet with this kit. For the version I'm building, however, the sand shields and PE fenders will not be used....:

And, of course, I had to test-fit the primary elements to get a feel for the project. So far, everything looks like a near-perfect fit!

Here's an old kit I've had in storage for years:

This MPM offering is not for the faint-of-heart, but still it is buildable. It's a typical limited-run kit and requires a good bit of work. Also I'll be using other kits and SAC landing gear to enhance the build. I started working on this so many years ago.......

Aircraft Modeling / Ju-87B Airfix 1/48

Here is my latest project on the workbench, the Airfix Ju-87:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/Henschelcontinued002_zps8fc0f132.jpg

This is a fair kit, not high-tech nor completely devoid of detail. The molding does require quite a lot of cleanup as most parts have more flash along the edges than we are becoming accustomed to nowadays. Certainly not the worst kit, but more like the kits of old.

More photos later, though no pictures of the early stages were taken. I'm still deciding on a paint scheme....... :-help

Aircraft Modeling / Eduard I-16 Type 24

Here's another sweet little Eduard jewel that was on great discount! I had no strength to resist another I-16..... :-jump
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/MiGandRata001_zpsfa8b1456.jpg

Just a few minutes and the wing was assembed and fuselage trial fitted. The first Eduard I-16 I built didn't fit perfectly due to a slightly warped fuselage half. This one is perfect and all slides together beautifully:

Time for me to begin this little gem, the early MiG-3 from Trumpeter. So far, the detail is very nice and I think this will be a wonderful out-of-box build for me!

Aircraft Modeling / AMTech Hs 123 1/48
« on: June 16, 2014, 03:16:43 AM »
Here's a start on another WWII era biplane that I've often wished to build, the Henschel 123. While browsing about, I found a package sale of three AMTech (ESCI, Revell, and Italeri also released this kit) Hs 123s. These also include three full resin cockpits by Black Box. Two comprehensive decal sheets and two sets of unspatted landing gear finished the deal.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/HortenPrimer002_zps07b18b54.jpg

The first item on the agenda was to set out one of the resin cockpit sets and clean the pour stubs from them. These are beautiful pieces, expertly mastered and poured. The instructions tell where to trim inside the cockpit and after doing so I can confirm that these fit GREAT!:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/Hs123Start001_zpsd4306834.jpg

Then the cockpit components received a coat of RLM02 and while that was drying I glued the wing parts together:

Aircraft Modeling / Josef Priller's Bf-109E
« on: May 01, 2014, 07:20:01 PM »
I've had an Eduard Emil Weekend Edition sitting on the shelf for some time. I have also had an old reference with the common photos of  Priller's E-3 and have always wanted to build this one. So, here goes, with only a couple of photos of the early stages. We've all seen the Eduard kit built so no reason to bore you with that part......

Aircraft Modeling / Nichimo Kawasaki Ki-45
« on: April 10, 2014, 04:08:44 PM »
Time to start something new (but very old). Several years ago I bought a large quantity of old kits at an antique store and this Nichimo Ki-45 was among them:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/Ki-45Start003_zpsd110ec82.jpg

As you can see, the box is in pretty rough shape and there was even some water damage from wherever it was stored. Inside is a partially-started airplane that the first owner had started on so many years ago. He/she had built the wings, engines and nacelles:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/Ki-45Start002_zps2962c456.jpg

They also laid out where to put frames and stringers in the fuselage and then got this far before putting the kit away for future finishing:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/Ki-45Start001_zpsc3ac82c4.jpg

So, my task is to finish what was first started by the original owner. They gave me a good starting point!

Aircraft Modeling / Trimaster He-162 1/48

Last spring I was able to finally find the old Trimaster He-162 at a good price, so it went into my Luftwaffe stack:

This is a really nice little model! Lots of PE parts and much nicely detailed white metal items, too. So simple to build, this is going together very rapidly. First I built up the instrument panel parts, partially of cast metal, plastic, and photoetched instrument panel and rudder pedals. The ejection seat is nicely cast in metal also. These parts all were given a coat of RLM66, then the main landing gear bay was built up. The engineering of this little jet is quite nice--the seat, nose gear strut and instrument panel parts all add to the weight needed to keep it sitting on the tricycle gear. There is a well made metal plug that fills the nose of the fuselage and finishes the weight needed. Once this was ready the RLM02 was sprayed on the gear bay and fuselage and the fuselage halves were then joined. All of this took so little time, and the fit was quite nice. Finally in this first session I put the cowling sections together:

Aircraft Modeling / MiG 21F-13 by Trumpeter
« on: March 12, 2014, 06:40:23 PM »
My desk is clear of projects right now and I can start this project. This is a kit that has been on my "to-do" list for some time, the Trumpeter F-13 in 1/48. I have always liked the thin lines of the early MiG 21! Just a few photos of the trees and other items:

Aircraft Modeling / Eduard Fw 190 Wooden Flaps 1/48
« on: January 20, 2014, 04:58:12 PM »
Here is a short review of another of the fine Eduard PE products. I apologize for not building and reviewing this sooner, I was sent this set many months ago....... ;)

Here we have a beautiful set of wooden flaps for the Eduard Fw 190D kit. As most of you know, the manufacturers substituted wood for aluminum on many late-war Luftwaffe machines, and the landing flaps on the Focke-Wulf fighter were redesigned to accomplish this.

The kit consists of one fret of PE parts and an excellent instruction sheet. The first photo shows one flap and flap-well built up and the other on the fret for comparison. Also, the first flap has been removed from the lower wing part of the airplane kit. This is typical Eduard construction--you just remove the part from the fret and bend the parts as needed. The ribs in the flap-well look complicated but this is quite easy to shape, they bend into position after making the "box" of the larger part. Same with the flap itself--simply bend along the scribed lines, following the instructions, and then use CA glue to bond the part along the joint line. Last step on the PE parts is to add the actuating eccentric to the center of the flap and apply a small trapezoidal doubler to the inner skin.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/EduardFlaps002_zps31fe90c9.jpg

So, the easy part is done! Now we move on to the styrene modifications. These changes are called out on the instructions and consist of thinning the surfaces where the new flap-well will mount. The lower wing requires a deep "shaving" of the plastic and so do both upper wing panels. Eduard has made the flap-wells very deep, just like the real airplane, so this is why you must trim considerable material from the wing parts. Both fuselage halves also must be trimmed where the flap-well will sit as do the inboard gun bay parts. On this photo you can see the trimmed areas marked with small black x letters.

Further updates will come along during aircraft assembly!

Aircraft Modeling / Bf 108 Eduard Weekend Edition
« on: December 27, 2013, 07:16:19 PM »
My workbench is somewhat free of space in one small area so I'm finally starting this little Eduard Taifun:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_1848_zpsabd63e9e.jpg

This is the Weekend Edition without PE or upgraded decals, but it is still a very, very nice kit in my eyes. First steps were to assemble the small jewel Argus engine and then build up some of the assemblies for painting:
