Combat Warplanes / Engine switch in Hurricane
« on: November 22, 2007, 10:12:38 PM »
I have read somewhere that the Jugoslav airforce once replaced a Rolls Royce engine with a Daimler Benz and that the performance of the Hurricane was improved.  If that is true, I wonder if the same result would have occurred had a DB engine been substituted for an RR in a Spitfire?  If that would be so, woulld it logically follow that DB engined 109's would out perform Spitfires I  and II?

Samuraj77:

Thank you for the information and sites on Boris Safonov.  There is little information on Soviet fliers available here.  I found the career of this ace to be very interesting,  Again, thank you very much.

Where can I find information on this ace.  If one reads US History books concerning WW II, you would hardly know that Russia was in the war.  You might fand something about Stalingrad and rarely Kursk and that's about it. Boris Safonov and many others gave the Germans a very bad time and ought o be better known in the west.

Could it be a target kite used by AA guns?

If you ever have the opportunity to visit the Wright Patterson Airbase near Dayton, Ohio you will see one of the world's great aircraft museums.  They even have an XB 70 here plus planes from almost very nation.
I recommend it highly.

This famous flier was brought down by an Austrian flier.  I can't remember his name.  Any help out there?

I have read where the Hispano Suiza engine was a very unreliable one.  Americans in particular seemed to have a great deal of problems with it.

Hi Brunno:

I believe these engines were lubed by castor oil.  That was an item not tobe found in Germany or AH.  They used a ersatz product which was not as satisfactory,  Did that contribute to the overheating and seizures?

Yes, they are mad.  My wife and her family are Russian.  But, you can't find better friends anywhere.  The family name is Ledzewicz.

The p39 and he P63 were interesting designs.  They seemed to beter in the JABO role than as fighters.
The Allison engine restricted ceiling as it did in the A36 and P51.  The P51 came into its own with the RR engine.  I wonder if that engine was ever experimentally tried in the Bell fighters?
