Combat Warplanes / Warplane Museum Project 2008
« on: December 27, 2007, 06:48:40 PM »
Hi mates.
Since i recently found an almost complete list with the links to all offical websites of North American Air Museums, i was asked to by a few people in the aerodrome to compile such a list for all Europe. I want to include all notable museums that deal with Warplanes.
If you find something please post the following:

Country

URL , Museum Name, Location

Example:

Netherlands

http://www.luchtvaartmuseumtexel.nl/ , Luchtvaart & Oorlogsmuseum Texel, De Cocksdorp (Texel)

I will then put all together with my own findings and later publish it as a complete list.

Thanks in advance

Kilian

Combat Warplanes / RAF Reconnaissance before Operation Neptune
« on: December 23, 2007, 12:40:03 PM »
Hi mfg.
Ive recently seen one of the most interesting tv shows about the invasion in Normandy. It was about the planning before the operations. The major plans of the "Atlantikwall" were smuggled to britain by a french resistance member. But it was not enough, they had to make photos of the beaches with Recce Spitfires in dangerous low level flights, additionally the asked everyone to send in Postcards from the years before which could depict the beaches. They said they used special technique in the recce but i cant remember at the moment. So they could later make 3-dimensional maps for the soldiers. Do you know some more about it?

merry Christmas,
Kilian

Just in case someone wants it, i bailed out at 35 Euro.
It was most probably taken after the great war and has inscripted on the fuselage: "Glück auf". This is motto of German 1.Bundesliga Football Club Schalke 04.

Combat Warplanes / Early camouflaging

Hello  mates.

I dont know if this was discussed here before but i was quite stunned when i see it.
I found this article on the excellent homepage of Mr Werner Müller a local aviation history enthusiast of my hometown Cologne about Invisible airplanes in WWI.

You can see here rare material out of Bayer AG archive. The planes were covered with Cellon, a transparent material out of acetate cellulose.

Very nice article Nico and No.1!!!  :-cool

I wonder how they managed to land the plane with such a long overhang behind the two back wheels of undercarriage?
Must have been difficult.  ;)
