Combat Warplanes / Unknown Junkers project
« on: August 13, 2010, 11:22:02 AM »
I recently found this interesting original Junkers works picture showing a strange double-hull flying boat.
It must be a project since I cannot find anything at all in the books I have on Junkers.
Plane is on reverse side of photo described as 'Junkers Junkerissene' but that does not ring any bells.
Project must date around 1935-1936 and because of rudder "colors" being similar to Dutch Marineluchtvaartdienst scheme some people think it is a competing Dornier Do-24 design.
Information is very welcome!!!

Aircraft Modeling / De Havilland DH.108 Swallow
« on: July 31, 2010, 11:42:49 PM »
Does anyone out there have any experience with modelling the De Havilland DH.108 Swallow?
There must be at least one vacform kit of this rare type.
See attached what type it is. Only three were built; all three crashed fatally and photos show all three planes built.

Combat Warplanes / DC-3 flight
« on: July 26, 2010, 09:23:00 PM »
Last Sunday I enjoyed a 25 minutes flight in the Douglas DC-3 Dakota PH-DDZ from the Dutch Dakota Association.
In fact its origine goes back to 1944 as a C-47 Skytrain! Flight started at Lelystad airport and led us over Lelystad, Ketelbrug, Ketelhaven, Elburg and Biddinghuizen.
I can only say I really enjoyed this ride in the Grand Old Lady!
Attached a photographic impression!

I am offered by our local photo shop a huge Sigma 80-400 zoom with optical stabilizer for My Nikon D70S for a price of EURO 695.
It seems a perfect match for airshow photographing.
Is there anyone out there with practical experiences?

Combat Warplanes / Look at this!
« on: June 01, 2010, 10:03:49 PM »
What is it? Is it a Hercules or a Chinook?
Tomorrow the answer and NO, it is NOT an invention of myself!
Illustration is an official press release of a big aircraft company!

Combat Warplanes / Submarine jet fighter
« on: April 07, 2010, 10:27:15 PM »
I recently came ito posession of the attached photo showing a very interesting and quite unique concept: a project for a submarine jet fighter. I can vaguely remember having seen this many, many years ago (around 1960) in the US magazine Air Progress. As far as I can remember it was a Convair project.
Anyone out there who can confirm this? More data will be appreciated!

Combat Warplanes / Focke Wulf FW-190!!!!!!
« on: August 29, 2009, 08:47:59 PM »
The Focke Fulf FW-190 replica that was introduced earlier this year at the La-Ferté-Alais airshow has visited today (29 August 2009) the Vintage & Veteran Fly-in/Drive in at Lelystad airport.
Event was organized by the Aviodrome Theme Park.
It is very difficult to stop photographing this spectacular plane, but here are just a few shots I made......

Combat Warplanes / Le Bourget: 45 years of 'progress'
« on: June 25, 2009, 09:33:53 PM »
Last Saturday (20 June) I visited the Salon Aeronautique at Le Bourget.
The Salon was started in 1909 and that means it celebrates its 100th birthday!
Unfortunately there was very little news; only new plane of significance was the Sukhoi Superjet 100.
Just to show that progress is not always as fast as we think these two photos give a very nice overview:
The Grumman Hawkeye as exhibited by the U.S. Navy this year and the same Grumman Hawkeye exhibited almost 45 years ago in 1965 (my first visit to Le Bourget!).
Even location where I took both photos is the same; only the background is changed with the C-141 Cargomaster replaced by the C-17 Globemaster!!!
A full report with many photos will be placed on the website!

Combat Warplanes / Fake aircraft photos
« on: June 18, 2009, 01:56:15 PM »
With Photoshop it is now vey easy of course to 'edit' images and present photos that may be totally different from reality! However, long before Photoshop existed this also happened.
Attached two nice examples of 'reworked' photos:
-Original F-84A Thunderjet press release photo from Republic reworked by KLu Public Affairs to represent a Dutch plane.
-Photo of the XF-104 Starfighter prototype with J-65 engine, short fuselage and intakes without the shock wave cones. Luftwaffe markings are fake. Also wing-tip Sidewinders are fake.
Most of the times you can see it, but there are also some nice cases of 'perfect' forgery!

Combat Warplanes / Ugliest plane!
« on: April 14, 2009, 10:12:05 PM »
Not all planes are designed with 'elegance' and there are certain candidates for the ugliest.
This is one of these uglies: the Bristol Type 72 racer. It was built in 1921 and it flew as bad as it looked!
In total seven flights were made before the plane was abandoned.

If one of you has another candidate for the ugliest plane, just feel free to comment!

Combat Warplanes / French jet fighter project
« on: April 05, 2009, 10:20:24 PM »
This photo showing a model of a 'S.N.C.A.S.O. interceptor' project was published in 1955 in a Dutch aviation magazine (AVIA-VLIEGWERELD). Model was shown during the Paris air show at Le Bourget of that year.
I am a little bit puzzled: Jean Cuny's book 'Les Avions de Combat' Vol.1 mentions NOTHING on such a Sud-Ouest project. However, mention is made in the same book-with some illustrations- of the Nord 'Harpon' fighter project. Although not exactly the same, it shows a jet fighter with more or less the same canard configuration. Any Guesses??

Market / 1909 aviation book offered for sale
« on: February 06, 2009, 12:40:34 PM »
On behalf of the Aviodrome museum at Lelystad I can offer for sale the book 'Wir Luftschiffer' by dr. Bröckelmann. Book was published in 1909 by Ullstein Verlag, Germany.
Although the title suggests it is only on ballooning, the book also gives a detailed account on airships and 'heavier than air' contraptions of that period. Book is in good condition with only some minor ragging on top of the spine.
Book also contains markings and stamps from the former Aviodome library and one of the folding pages has become detached (but is still available!),
Book measures 230 x 160 x 40 mm and contains 433 pages with 300 illustrations and 10 maps.
Attached a few images to give you an impression.
Price has been set at EURO 75 excluding P & P. Weight is some 1.5 kg, so some 10-15 EURO for must be added to the price for shipment!
Anyone out there interested? If so, contact me (n.braas@chello.nl)
