Combat Warplanes / New Spitfire for the BBMF
« on: May 18, 2013, 04:33:22 PM »
Battle Of Britain Memorial Flights (BBMF) new Spitfire TE311 takes to the air again.

The RAF Webpage states "Spitfire TE311 is a low-back/bubble-canopy Mk XVI with ‘clipped’ wingtips. Some 58 years after it last flew, TE311 will be back in the air in 2013, having undergone a painstaking re-build to flying condition by BBMF technicians, which was started in October 2001.

TE311 was taken on charge by the Air Ministry on 8 June 1945 – a month after the war ended – and was placed in storage. From October 1945 to February 1946, it was flown by the Handling Squadron of the Empire Central Flying School (ECFS) at Hullavington. Subsequently, after another period in store, it was used by the Ferry Pilot Training Flights at Aston Down and Benson. TE311 was grounded and transferred to non-effective stock on 13 December 1954. Subsequently the aircraft was a ‘gate guardian’ at Tangmere for 12 years and then, for over 30 years, was used as a static display exhibit at many air shows, as part of the RAF Exhibition Flight."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/matzos/Odds/TE311_zps1af93d09.jpg

"TE311 is painted as Spitfire XVI TB675 '4D-V', the aircraft of Squadron Leader Tony Reeves DFC, who was the Commanding Officer of 74 Squadron in 1945."

Marking the 70th anniversary of the Dambuster's Raid.

Eight of the original 19 Lancaster bombers were damaged or shot down, some of these were before they got to their targets, and of the 133 aircrew, 53 were killed and three captured.

We must not also forget the number of people that were killed on the ground, almost 1,300 people that died, 749 were Ukrainian prisoners of war based in a camp just below the Eder dam.

Many saw the raid as a failure. The attacks failed to breach the Sorpe dam; and the disruption to the German war production was minimal, also the water supply in the Ruhr valley was back to original levels six weeks later. However, the raid was a major boost to British morale at the time in 1943, with the War Office releasing the aerial images of the raid to the British press. This was the first time that the public had seen any form of reconnaissance imagery.

The 617 Squadron remains in service and current they fly the Tornado GR4.

Ground Forces / Visit to IWM Duxford Land Warfare Hanger
« on: May 01, 2013, 08:16:03 PM »
IWM Duxford is well known as a former Battle of Britain fighter station and now as an aircraft museum, however they have a truly excellent land warfare hanger which houses a number of working vehicles.
Here are just a few of the vehicles parked outside the main hanger.

Combat Warplanes / RAF Photographic Competition 2012
« on: October 20, 2012, 08:38:58 AM »
For the past 6 months I have been working on the annual RAF Photographic Competition, which is made up of 12 categories, of which, 10 are only to RAF Photographers only and the other two to any member of the RAF.  Judging took place in September and the Awards were held on the 16th October at the RAF Club in London, with the Presenting Officer being Sir Steven Dalton, the Chief of the Air Staff.  This was to be my last competition and I'm about to retire from the Service later this year after 37 years in uniform.

I wish to share with you some of the 900+ images that were submitted, which I had to book in!!  ;). I hope you enjoy them.

Mick

Has anyone seen or heard of these kits?

http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/modelkitsets

I'm looking at getting the Rumpler C.IV (early) mainly because you can have a reconnaissance version.

http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/533C00C193AE7CC31EA3358A8DB07BCF

It works out cheaper if I buy it from the site and get it shipped from New Zealand than if I purchase if here in the UK.  :-think

What is wrong with this Spitfire.

I purchased this photograph off ebay last week and I found it very interesting. I had a couple of guys in my office looking over it for a couple of days before I gave them the answers.

Ground Forces / Trooping the Colour 2012
« on: June 17, 2012, 09:16:43 AM »
I was very lucky to receive two tickets to this years Trooping the Colour.
The ceremony of Trooping the Colour is believed to have been performed first during the reign of King Charles II (1660-1685). Today this spectacle remains a celebration of the Sovereign's official birthday. There has only been one year when the Queen has not taken the salute since her accession to the throne and this was in 1955 and was due to a national rail strike.

On Parade for this event was:
The Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery. The Sovereign's Escort, The Sovereign's Escort, The Household Cavalry.
No.1 Guard (Escort to the Colour) 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards.
No.2 Guard 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards.
No.3 Guard No.7 Company Coldstream Guards.
No.4 Guard Nijmegen Company Grenadier Guards.
No.5 Guard 1st Battalion Irish Guards.
No.6 Guard F Company Scots Guard.

In total 52 Officers, 1049 Soldiers (including 222 musicians) and 198 Horses.

Below are some of the images I took on this once in a lifetime trip.

Just seen some great video taken from the port facing oblique camera position of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flights PR XIX, it was taken during the fly pass for the Queens Diamond Jubilee, it shows all the other BBMF aircraft in formation over the London and the Palace.

At 110Mb a bit large for the site, let me work on it and I will report back once I get it to a workable size.  :-kr
