Warplane Art / Van Berkel WA
« on: December 11, 2020, 07:06:07 PM »
The story of the Van Berkel WA begins with an emergency landing of a German Hansa-Brandenburg W.12 float plane in April 1918 near the Wadden Islands. It was confiscated by the Dutch government. Van Berkel Patent, known for precision scales and meat slicers, was willing to set up an aircraft construction department, specifically for this aircraft, in order to supply seaplanes for the Naval Aviation Service (MLD). It became the Van berkel WA. The first flight took place in September 1919. The WA remained in service until 1933. The biplane float plane was first used as a fighter but later used as a scout, both in the Netherlands and in the Dutch East Indies. The MLD largely deployed the WA in the Dutch East Indies in order to increase the flight services in the Indian archipelago.
The first aircraft were still equipped with the neutrality orange roundel and later they were provided with the tricolor rosette.
Here are 2 aircraft, the W3 and the W17, used in the Dutch East Indies.

Warplane Art / Wright Martin Type R
« on: December 05, 2020, 11:06:59 AM »
Wright-Martin two-seater flying boat Type "R" was designed for reconnaissance purposes, 1916-1919.
In the summer of 1915 it was decided after a short investigation to purchase a number of aircraft. In mid-1917 they arrived in parts and were set up at Schellingwoude. From October 1917 they went to De Mok and the aircraft were used as scouts. The Marine Aviation Service had two aircraft in use, the H1 and the H2. Here the H1 at the Mok airport.

Warplane Art / Glenn Martin type TA & TT

In 1913 the PVA ((ProefVliegAfdeeling = Test Flight Department) of the KNIL (Royal Netherlands-Indies Army) was founded. After a couple less successful tests with different aircraft, two Martin TA (Tractor Army) were ordered in may 1915 at the Glenn L . Martin Company. The first one was delivered in June 1915 and was registered with the serial-number TA-1. Only the digit 1 was painted on the tailwing. In November 1915 Lt.Flyer Henk Ter Poorten made the first flight with the TA-1 from Tandjong Priok to Rawah Penganongan on Java. The Martin TA was equipped with the Hall-Scott Type 5-A5 engine with 100 HP. The engine was to slow to fly with two persons and was later replaced by the 140HP engine.
With the succes of the TA-1 planes the PVA was dissolved and replaced by the founding of the LA (Luchtafdeling-Air department ) of the KNIL. Here is the photograph from that first flight and the profile I made of it.

Warplane Art / Curtiss H-12A Flying Boat
« on: July 06, 2020, 02:55:16 PM »
In June 1918 during the First World War, there was a confrontation between English and German seaplanes in the Wadden Islands, including Felixstowes. But a Curtiss plane from the English RNAS was also involved and made an emergency landing at sea on June 4, 1918 after a hit. Went ashore at Vlieland but, before it could be set on fire by the crew, it was confiscated by Dutch soldiers on the spot. The chest was interned and formally purchased at the end of 1918. This Curtiss was a H-12A and had a 350 hp Rolls Royce Eagle VIII engine. It belonged to the RNAS and had the serial number 8689. Several Curtiss H-12's were modified with a Felixstowe F.2A Hull, the 8689 had originally fins, as shown in the detail.
It went on service with the MLD with the number L-2.

After an attack on a German Zeppelin, this aircraft had to make an emergency landing at Borkum on 26 September 1917. It was interned and transferred to the MVK De Mok, where it was provided with an orange roundel and the registration K-1. It was used by MLD. It had a Sunbeam 260 HP engine. The plane hardly flew and was taken off in 1920.

Warplane Art / Fokker B.I
« on: June 14, 2020, 08:50:04 PM »
Due to the need for flying boats at the MLD Fokker tried to manufacture its own flying boat. It became the Fokker B.I, partly made of aluminum, linen and wood. The B.I was intended for the Dutch East Indies. In 1922 it made its test run and was then shipped to Indie. It was not waterproof and was not very fast. Ultimately, the MLD chose the Dornier Wal. Here is my profile of the only B.I, who got the registration number of FB-1A in the Indies.

At the near end of WW1 a Felixstowe F.2A serial N4451 made a crash landing at Noordwijk in The Netherlands. The plane was confiscated by the Dutch Military. It got the designation L1 and was handed over to the MLD. The MLD never flew with it due to the end of the war. It was send back to the RNAS. Here is the profile.

Warplane Art / Van Berkel WB
« on: May 29, 2020, 09:07:08 PM »
The Van Berkel W-B was a single engine Dutch long range reconnaissance seaplane built in the early 1920s for work in the Dutch East Indies. Six were operated by the Dutch Naval Aviation Service (MLD) with disappointing results,
The WB floatplanes had flutter and stability problems, though the last two were not decommissioned until 1933.

There are no profiles or line-drawing images from the van Berkel WB. So in making a profile I used photo’s from IPMS Nederland and the color schemes from KW Jonker’s website and drawing from the Hansa-brandenburg W29.

Warplane Art / White & Thompson No 3
« on: May 21, 2020, 06:00:31 PM »
Hi Guys,

Nothing produced here for some time. I came across a photo of a White & Thompson flying boat. A Type 3, which was hit by German anti-aircraft at Zeebrugge in 1915 during WW1. Landed at West-Kapelle in Zeeland and was confiscated by the Dutch Navy. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant D.G Murray was captured. The aircraft was taken into use by the Dutch Navy Aviation Service and I made the profile of this photo. It was used at MKV De Mok in Texel in 1917.

Warplane Art / Curtiss Model F

I started making profile drawings from old USN birds, because they were scarcely drawn. I make them also for wings-aviation, a site belonging to Michael Fader. So here is an early bird: Curtiss Model F
