Combat Warplanes / Re: Stealth bomber crashes on Guam
« on: February 23, 2008, 07:05:44 PM »
Imagine what you could build for that money of 1 stealth bomber.  :-eek
The first 20 B-2 bombers cost $2.2 Billion each.  :-eek Because money spent on research and development are sunk costs, additional bombers would cost a mere $690 million each, according to the manufacturer. The Air Force, however, estimates the full cost (including operations and maintenance costs) of each new B-2 at approximately $1.5 billion. An additional 20 B-2s would cost a total of at least $30 Billion over a projected 20 year lifespan.

The first of the modern jets to be designed specifically for photo-reconnaissance, the Thunderflash was the first reconnaissance airplane equipped with a combination of standard aerial cameras and dicing (low-level reconnaissance, from the saying "dicing with Death!") camera for close-up photos of individual targets.

It was also the first fighter-type aircraft to be equipped with the Tri-Metrogon camera which could take horizon-to-horizon pictures. Unlike the Thunderstreak.

It was the first reconnaissance fighter to have a camera control system and a viewfinder for the pilot, who also acted as the cameraman. The aircraft was first tested in February 1952, and 715 of the aircraft were produced.

Here's one I do have Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6/U2 (TP814 c/n 412951).
Photographed at Air Fighting Development Unit, Duxford, England, UK, 1941-42.
The print was given to me by a friend who's father took the photo during his service career at Duxford.
