Combat Warplanes / Re: Cannon powered Corsair
« on: March 14, 2009, 04:01:09 PM »
Letipapa, you 'blocked' my reply while I was sending it!

Since I provided this nice shot I can give the following details:
Photo is an original Chance Vought press release of 5 April 1945.
Text attached reads:
'More firepower to Blast the Japs: a Chance Vought F4U-1C Corsair, of the type so successfully from carrier and shore bases by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fliers, is shown here with four 20 mm cannon, two in each wing. A number of cannon-firing Corsairs are in combat, while others continue to move from Chance Vought assembly lines equippped with the conventional six .50 caliber machine guns.'

Yep, one CW-21 was captured and flown in Japanese markings! Photos: see Google.
They were published many years ago in Air Enthousiast I believe.
Some Dutch Falcons were also captured. Even in 1946 one of these was photographed in Kalang, Singapore but I have never seen these.
Colour scheme of CW22 was same as for CW-21 Interceptor: a mix of light/medium green and dark green, often described as 'new leaf and old leaf colour'.

CW-22 was export version! It was used by the ML in the Netherlands East Indies as a trainer for the CW-21 Interceptor and as a reconnaissance plane during the war against Japanese forces. In total 36 were purchased and 18 of them saw action during the war.

Weathering is impressive!
Are you also going to make a profile of one of the very colourful formation assembly ships?

Girl 'Sarinah' artwork on modern Dutch Mitchell is original!
B-25C No. N5-149 flew with this artwork in 1944 from Austalia.
Later this plane flew at the Indonesian air force AURI!

How about this one from the Dutch Mitchell?
It's not a blonde but that doesn't matter....
'Plesiran 'neer?' is Dutch/Indonesian for 'Have fun mister?'
Do I have to explain more?

Assume you won't forget the single-fin Navy version Privateer.
Maybe interesting: Privateer was also used with civil markings as a water-bomber in a very attractive metalic/orange colour scheme.

Market / 1909 aviation book offered for sale
« on: February 06, 2009, 12:40:34 PM »
On behalf of the Aviodrome museum at Lelystad I can offer for sale the book 'Wir Luftschiffer' by dr. Bröckelmann. Book was published in 1909 by Ullstein Verlag, Germany.
Although the title suggests it is only on ballooning, the book also gives a detailed account on airships and 'heavier than air' contraptions of that period. Book is in good condition with only some minor ragging on top of the spine.
Book also contains markings and stamps from the former Aviodome library and one of the folding pages has become detached (but is still available!),
Book measures 230 x 160 x 40 mm and contains 433 pages with 300 illustrations and 10 maps.
Attached a few images to give you an impression.
Price has been set at EURO 75 excluding P & P. Weight is some 1.5 kg, so some 10-15 EURO for must be added to the price for shipment!
Anyone out there interested? If so, contact me (n.braas@chello.nl)

Plane was originally a B-25J-20-NC and was built in 1944.
It never saw any action during the war, but remained in the United States.
After the war in was converted into unarmed transport version.
Of course transport Mitchells do not need any turrets!
It was struck of charge by USAF in March 1959 and had several owners before it was acquired by DBAF in 1990.
Current colour scheme is correct, but version is not (yet) original!

Nice set of profiles! I believe that what you called a 'captured aircraft' was in fact a Zero carrying the surrendering cross markings. These markings were fitted to aircraft used for transport/escort of the Japanese surrendering committee.

The 1965 catalogue (yes, I still have it!) did not mention which Lansen version it was, but most likely it was the A-32. Are you interested in 'years fifties' bound volumes of the periodical SAAB Sonics? If so, contact me by E-mail. I have two of them in the 2nd hand bookshop. I can check which years next Tuesday///
