This clearly explains why on photos the Skyraider always has extensive oil streaks on the fuselage!

Yes, I can still remember this old Lindberg kit. I built it as the original F4D-1 many years ago.
Must have been end seventies or even earlier! I still had the completed kit, but I had to remove quite a lot of dust!

Combat Warplanes / Re: Ugliest plane!
« on: April 16, 2009, 10:15:40 AM »
That Bumblebee is not ugly! It is a nice little plane and the name is very, very appropriate!
Attached another ugly: the Dutch Verbeek Parasol. It was built well before the war by mr. Adri Verbeek and it was an early attempt for an ultra-light as you can see. The name 'Parasol' is the name I gave it when I discovered the existence of this plane some 20 years ago. Plane ended after a its unintended first flight in a willow tree and was never repaired.
Photo's are from mr. Verbeek!

Combat Warplanes / Ugliest plane!
« on: April 14, 2009, 10:12:05 PM »
Not all planes are designed with 'elegance' and there are certain candidates for the ugliest.
This is one of these uglies: the Bristol Type 72 racer. It was built in 1921 and it flew as bad as it looked!
In total seven flights were made before the plane was abandoned.

If one of you has another candidate for the ugliest plane, just feel free to comment!

Combat Warplanes / French jet fighter project
« on: April 05, 2009, 10:20:24 PM »
This photo showing a model of a 'S.N.C.A.S.O. interceptor' project was published in 1955 in a Dutch aviation magazine (AVIA-VLIEGWERELD). Model was shown during the Paris air show at Le Bourget of that year.
I am a little bit puzzled: Jean Cuny's book 'Les Avions de Combat' Vol.1 mentions NOTHING on such a Sud-Ouest project. However, mention is made in the same book-with some illustrations- of the Nord 'Harpon' fighter project. Although not exactly the same, it shows a jet fighter with more or less the same canard configuration. Any Guesses??

Warplane Art / Re: Challenge- Sabre
« on: March 23, 2009, 09:45:52 AM »
Interesting plane that Sabre in Yugo colours. There is a Dutch connection: in the early sixties the Yugoslavian Sabres were overhauled by Avio-Diepen at Papendrecht-the Netherlands. Aviolanda-Diepen was a Fokker subsidiary and also did work on the Fokker S-14 Machtrainer prototype for conversion into a laboratory aircraft for the Dutch Air-and Space laboratories NLR. Work on the S-14 was considerably delayed because the order on the Sabres had a higher priority!

Combat Warplanes / Re: Martin Mauler prototype

Yes, Mauler was an interesting ship!
Attached some more shots of prototype XBTM-1 and production AM-1.
Please, note that on XBTM-1 photo it is the background that is diving; NOT the plane!
As you see the Mauler really had teeth and claws!!

In total 151 Martin Maulers were built for the US Navy.
They served only for a few years, at VA-17A, but also at some other units. During 1950 all Maulers were assigned to Reserve units; Skyraiders were for 1st-line squadrons. Six were fitted with ECM equipment as AM-1Q.

No, Boeing's XF8B-1 was already cancelled at an early stage. As far as I know designation AB-1 was never used; not even officially proposed. On the other hand, the XF8B-1 had as a fighter an internal bom-bay, so there was no need to convert it into an attack version. It already was one!!

Martin AM-1 Mauler was similar 'macho'-plane as the Douglas Skyraider. In fact it was ordered as a fail-safe just in case the Skyraider would be disappointing. This was not the case and as a consequence only a small batch of Maulers was manufactured!
Boeing had the AB-1, the attack-designation for its big XF8B-1 fighter but two types seemed more than enough at that time!
