Bottom is painted in Sea Grey Medium and top in Ocean Grey. To regret, I make one mistake- I forget to mask black step strip, so I will need to paint it later... :-(

Pleasure continue with painting, and this time for the very start, small surfaces on kit and small elements on fret. One omission I have make, I did not clean edges of landing gear struts, so they need additional work. No surface problems noticed, kit is of outstanding quality!!

This is last stage of assembly before painting. What make doubt are two bottles behind the pilot head- I have seen it on only one photo, rest of photos of operational airplanes, I did not notice. Of other elements I assembly tail wheel leg and cockpit canopy. Extra smooth work thanks to the so precise made parts!!

Miscellaneous Subjects / Bell X-1
« on: December 09, 2021, 09:37:40 PM »
Already in the middle of the Second World War, it became clear that the future of combat aviation was jet propulsion. Therefore, in 1943, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) began the MX-524 program to overcome the sound barrier. A year later, Bell Aircraft received a contract for the construction of the X-1 aircraft. On December 9, 1946, the first flight of the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft with a running engine.

The X-1 was a mid-plane with a retractable landing gear. It was equipped with a Reaction Motors XLR11-RM-3 rocket engine with a thrust of 27 kN. The maximum speed was 2594 km/ h, there was enough fuel for 5 minutes of flight.

The flight with the engine running was preceded by launches of the aircraft as a glider from the carrier - bomber Boeing B-29 Superfortress. On October 14, 1947, pilot Charles "Chuck" Yeager (Chuck Yeager) developed a speed of 1066 km/h on the X-1, exceeding the speed of sound for the first time. A total of 7 Bell X-1 aircraft were built as part of the MX524 program.

Combat Warplanes / Heinkel He 162 Volksj?ger
« on: December 06, 2021, 07:20:28 PM »
Losing the war, by 1944 Germany had focused on the production of jet fighters. The Messerschmitt Me.262 was considered expensive and unreliable, so on September 8, 1944, the requirements for a simple and cheap fighter in production were published. Among all the projects, we chose the He 162 Volksj?ger ("people's fighter") from Heinkel, developed and tested in just 90 days. December 6, 1944 - the first flight of the Heinkel He 162 Volksj?ger jet fighter.

It was a single-seat high-wing aircraft with a retractable landing gear and a V-shaped two-keel tail, made mainly of wood. It was equipped with a BMW 109-003E-1 engine with a thrust of 7.85 kN. The maximum speed is 900 km/h, the flight range is 970 km. Armament ? 2 ? 20 mm guns.

320 fighters were built before the end of the war. They were difficult to pilot, often broke down and crashed. After the war, the Allies tested the captured He 162 and came to the conclusion about their unsatisfactory flight characteristics.

Combat Warplanes / Sh-Tandem / Ш-Тандем
« on: December 05, 2021, 06:45:59 PM »
In the mid-1930s, work was underway in the USSR to create an armored attack aircraft, which eventually led to the development of the famous Il-2. But in parallel, there were projects of small light attack aircraft. One of them was the Sh-Tandem aircraft, designed by designer Peter Grushin in the workshops of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI). December 5, 1937 - the first flight of the experimental light attack aircraft Sh-Tandem (aka Sh-MAI, MAI-3, MAI-Tandem).

As you can guess from the name, the Sh-Tandem was designed according to a tandem scheme with a two-keel tail and a retractable landing gear. With the M-87 engine (930 hp), it developed a maximum speed of 488 km/h. The armament consisted of 5 ? 7.62 mm SHKAS machine guns and 200 kg bombs.

The tests revealed a number of problems for the Sh-Tandem ? insufficient stability, poor handling, difficulties with takeoff. The designer was offered to modify his aircraft, but in May 1940 the project was closed. Only 1 prototype of the Sh-Tandem was built.
