Combat Warplanes / Re: Harrier II
« on: November 02, 2009, 08:30:09 PM »
The BAE Systems/Boeing Harrier II RAF & Royal Navy - GR5, GR7, and GR9 series.  Closely related to the U.S.-built AV-8B Harrier II. Both are primarily used for light attack or multi-role tasks, and are often operated from small aircraft carriers.

The Harrier II is an extensively modified version of the Harrier GR1/GR3 series which first flew in December 1967. The original aluminium alloy fuselage was replaced by composites, providing significant weight reduction and increased payload. An all-new one-piece wing provides around 14 per cent more area.

The UK's version of the Harrier II uses different avionic systems, an additional missile pylon in front of each wing landing gear, and strengthened leading edges of the wings to meet higher bird strike requirements.

The images below of teh GR7's I took during my tour in the Gulf in 2006,

Must find one magazine where is shown whole history of this machine, I think that on very start it was pale blue!

That's right No.1 some PR.XIs were PRU Blue all over.  However, PR.XIs in India had Medium Sea Grey uppersurfaces with PRU Blue undersides.
The USAAF also flow the PR.IX and they have two colour profiles, one was bare metal with red panels under the engine exhaust and red on the rudder. The others carried the normal PRU Blue. Both these types were flown with the 14th Photo Squadrom of the 7th Photo Group which was based at RAF Mount Farm, Dec 1944

What a great shape this Mk was. 15 Mk.IX fighters were converted to PR.IX's at RAF Benson. These versions first started to appear in November 1942, they were a slight improvement on the pervious mark. But they were only a stop-gap for PR Mk XI . For long-range missions they had to have a 'slipper' tank added under the fuselage, as they were not fitted with internal wing tanks.

Maybe you could do a profile of the PR.XI in PINK!

Looking forward to this profile

The Royal Air Force signed a formal agreement with the USA on the 27th January 1950 for the loaned of seventy B-29 bombers with the serial numbers:

WF434-WF448
WF490-WF-514
WF545-WF574

Later another 18 were delivered under serials WW342-WW356 and WZ966-WZ968.
The RAF called the aircraft the Boeing Washington B.1, they joined RAF Bomber Command in 1950 as a longer-range nuclear-capable bomber, they were to be a stopgap until the introduction of the EE Canberra.

The first 4 aircraft went to the Washington Conversion Unit based at RAF Marham on March 22nd, 1950. The first Squadron to see service with the Washington was No. 115 Squadron
After the Canberra bomber started to enter RAF service most of the Washingtons had been returned, although one or two, I cannot find true records for this, remained in the UK as gunnery targets.

In 1951 two RAF Washingtons took part in the SAC bombing competition compeating against USAF B-29s, results of the competition are unknown to me  ;)

Royal Air Force Squadrons equipped with the Washington were:
Based at RAF Marham -  Nos. 35, 90, 115 & 207
Based at RAF Coningsby - Nos. 15, 44, 57 & 149, later 57 Sqn moved to RAF Waddington in April 52
And RAF Watton had 192 Squadron that operated the aircraft from April 1952 to February 1958

The North American Aviation T-28 Trojan was a piston-engined military trainer aircraft used by the United States Air Force and United States Navy beginning in the 1950s. Besides its use as a trainer, the T-28 was successfully employed as a Counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft primarily in Vietnam.

As you may well see from some of the shots, it was a very wet day at the start.  ;)
