Awesome photos!

The Horten designs are so far advanced, even today, and this is a fantastic example!

I am to the point where painting should start. Even with extra coffee, today just wasn't a painting day :-dal, so I decided to explore the fit of the upper wing. Everything I've read about the CA kit says the struts aren't right or the wing dihedral is wrong, etc. I did find that the upper wing of my example had more dihedral than it should have. I simply (very carefully) straightened it out by clamping half of the wing in my vise and applying some pressure. Then I slid the completed engine in place, laid the resin skis out, and propped the wing on the fuselage to see how it will look. I still haven't started exploring the actual struts--not the day for that either.

Aircraft Modeling / Bf-109 Group Build-All Variants
« on: September 12, 2011, 07:05:03 PM »
We were visiting amongst ourselves on another thread and decided it might be nice to start a long-term Group Build for any and all versions of the Messerschmitt Bf-109 and offspring. All scales, all machines, all nationalities........this should be fun! :-jump As far as I am concerned we can work on this project at our leisure and we should keep it open for a   l o n g   time. I'm thinking it might be nice to make this a sticky topic in the future if we have enough response. Ideas?

Here are my four current/future projects, two restorations of Gustavs and the two Emils I recently purchased.

If we do this I'll learn something about the '109, like I do on every other LLL topic! :-salut

There are so many possibilities that we could even sticky the thread if we wanted!

Here's the underside "tiger-stripe" night camouflage. Perhaps tomorrow the topside will get its final coat.

Two more photos--I finished fitting the wing-to-fuselage joint and did a final cleanup on the oil cooler openings, then installed the shutter doors.

This second one is of the engine, and it is really, really a nice model in itself, made up of fifteen resin parts and a PE pushrod set. Not only is it well detailed but it goes together very nicely. All I added was a little plumbing and wiring.

We were just admiring ta152c's new Bf-109 goodies on the Acquisitions thread when the thought occurred to me: Would it be a good idea to start a '109 GB thread and leave it open-ended like the Japan-Build? There are just so many different variations and paint schemes that we could build for years at whatever pace we felt like.

Thoughts?
Scott

Thanks for the replies on the oil cooler openings y'all. :-ok

I'll be installing the small doors in there, especially so since I'm building a winterized bird. I don't have access to a pilot's handbook or technical manual, but from the photos it looks like the door pivots in the center like the throttle plate on a carburetor to allow air through the cooler when needed. In one of Walter Scheibling's walkaround photos of the Hendon airplane you can see what looks like the bearing or bushing that the shaft would turn on.

Profa, thanks for the book title--I'll see if I can find one or order it direct from Mr. Forslund.

One item I forgot to mention about the Classic Airframes kit--the oil cooler inlets and outlets in each wing root are missing. It's not a huge problem, though. I drilled the inlets out and simply made outlet fairings from .005 sheet styrene.

You can see in the underside shot that there isn't a lot of filler as I'd mentioned earlier. Just a tiny bit along the major seams and joints and a quick sanding took care of them.

Nice fit and good solution for the windscreen, Scott! Much better, if you ask me, that heat warping...

Dependng on series, internal structure would be earlier green or later gray - this directive was put into full effect in 1942, but for Fiat one should find a photo of particular machine (which is impossible) to use right color... Therefore both are possible. Duxford and Swedish samples have gray, while Italian is green :-dal

Yes, I was afraid of two possibilities if I tried to warp the transparency--1. I'd break it, 2. It would fly out of my fingers into the Carpet Monster and never be seen again!

When I started my cockpit I initially thought the green would have been used, but the real Swedish airplane shows it to be the dark grey. I'm going to try to find another kit (Italeri this time, I think) and build an early machine with green.

Great point, brother! :-ok

I was told by another modeler that he finally gave up on a CA CR.42 because the cockpit didn't "fit". Heck, it only took me five minutes or so to trim the inside of the fuselage walls and everything snuggles in there nicely. I must say that the Eduard PE that comes with the kit is extremely nice and looks just like the instrument panel in the 1/1 scale Swedish survivor. We should add this type of material to Sall's sticky thread about different techniques, I reckon.
