Hmmm...I know Hemiman has visited but he doesn't build models. I'll talk to him next week as we often work in the same area of the hangar.

It's too bad I couldn't get to the engine data plate to see which variant this is. It definitely isn't for anything that could fire a cannon through the prop shaft as there isn't an opening in the gearbox to allow for the gun barrel extension. The placard with the engine didn't give any info on where Mr. Warp acquired it, either.

I'm very partial to the early French DB-7s also. The French and Belgian orders really kicked off the long production run of this machine. So many variants!

No.1, I'll make sure that "Hemiman" from WIX comes here to see this--his father flew on the A-20s of the 8th Attack Squadron out in the Pacific.

Here are the rest of the photos of the DB 601. I apologize for not getting better pictures but there was just no way to get a better angle for the other side of the engine. The museum has so many artifacts that everything is very, very tightly displayed. Again, bear in mind that the engine is upside down in these piccies.

These last two are the data plates on the fuel injection unit:

Just saw this- fantastic work! Very interesting camo pattern. Thanks for documenting that.

Jon,

My scheme is more extrapolation than fact, I'm afraid. I had several photos of machines from NSG 9 and each airplane has a somewhat different disruptive pattern on it, both top and bottom. Some were more uniform "snake" squiggles and one was a tight cross-hatched pattern on most of the airplane. These were new airplanes when NSG 9 received them, fresh in either the splinter pattern or the overall green of the last production batches. I believe (my supposition only) each crew was handed the spray gun and compressor and the results were different as each plane crew did their own birds. Mine is from a grainy photo and this one seemed to have several different "designs" on it, almost as if different men shot different parts of the airplane. So, it's close but probably not perfectly accurate.

Thanks for the positive comments, though!
Scott

Very nice!

Years ago I built the Fw 190 portion of a Mistel but never got around to the mother ship. Yours is wonderful and may motivate me to find my '88.

Outstanding stuff, the Walther booster looks stunning with all that rivet detail. Love the engine :)

More shots of the Walter from today's visit. Other than the slight damage at the exhaust nozzle it seems you could fill 'er up and fly away!

There's no reason for most people to know about the Pioneer Village, especially outside the U.S., No.1. They have never advertised heavily even in the States.

Mr. Warp collected everything imagineable and I'll take some representative photos today.

Yes, the Havoc/Boston/A-20 is a great subject. You won't run out of paint schemes for the profiles either!

The A-20 series was one of my father's favorites since he would see them fly over at low-level in the Tunisian desert and know they were on his side of the conflict. He always called them the "Boston Bomber" regardless of which air force was flying them.

Today we visited the small Midwestern town of Minden, Nebraska, the home of Pioneer Village. This is a very large collection of artifacts of Americana and also includes a few items of interest to warbird enthusiasts. The collection was built over thirty years by Harold Warp, the son of Norwegian immigrants to Nebraska. Mr. Warp developed "Flex-O-Glass" clear plastic in the 1920s and became very wealthy, spending much of the proceeds to build the Pioneer Village collection.

Here are just a few photos of some interesting artifacts.

The placard for this engine would lead one to believe it is a DB 605 but there are a number of casting marks that have a 601 on them. To the museum's credit the sign does mention that the engine is displayed upside down.

I'll post a few more photos later--we're going to spend a good bit of tomorrow going through the rest of the facility.

Very nice finish and I really enjoy the Italian flavor. When we get back from holiday I hope to continue on a couple of my projects.

Tonight I sprayed the Gaillo Mimetico 3 on the top surfaces. It will have plenty of time to cure before I apply the next two colors of mottled camouflage as we're going to be out of town for a few days. Time for my lovely wife and I to take a short vacation! :-cool
