Yes, that is true. I really stumbled upon that decal sheet when researching the Iranian examples.

Iran? Do you have any images?

Go here for a photo of a Golden Crown aerobatic team bird: http://www.iiaf.net/aircraft/jetfighters/F84/f84.html
A decal sheet in 1/72 (also 1/48) here, along with a Yugoslavian version among others: http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/ISL/Hi-Decal_Line/1.48/48011-48020/48017_F-84G/HD48017.htm

Thank you, Sall! :-wave

The pictures are deceptive, No.1 ;)......there is still a mixture of raised panel lines on this with engraved ones where I had to use filler. It's not all that great "in the flesh" so to say. It certainly wouldn't be something to put on a contest table but it I've always wanted a Dutch F-84. Maybe the remaining kit I have could be Belgian, or Greek, or Turkish, or German or..........so many possibilities! :-tri

Good to see that the plastic firmed up, No.1!

Here are a few photos and some background on my first project for this GB.

The airplane is F-84F-51-RE originally given USAF serial 52-7128. It entered service with the KLu as P-115 on 21 July 1956 and was damaged exactly one month later on 21 August. After that the airplane was determined to be beyond airworthy repair and assigned as an instructional airframe at LETS Deelen. There are numerous photos of her on the web at various times as a decoy, on display, etc. The model depicts the airplane during the month it was on flight status with 315 Squadron.

I'd like to especially thank No.1 for sending me the Dutch national insignia. :-flo The rest of the decals came from various remains in the spares, including some from a very old Heller RF-84F sheet that went on perfectly. Second, thanks to Scale Aircraft Conversions for the white metal landing gear kit. :-ok

but that was a stinking color (my wife disputed me each time due to the odor left in the house...)

Now THAT I understand!!!!!! I have a Dupont Variprime primer that I have used and it STINKS :-danger :-danger. Ellen threatens to throw me out to the dogs :-bat every time I even think about using that stuff, and I paint in the garage!

I must again say thanks for the sponge idea--I've used it on the last few builds and it is a great thing. :-flo

Now that the debacle of the fingerprint is behind me I flipped the airplane over and finished installing the SAC landing gear set. The only real painting on these was to paint the chrome part of the cylinder with Chrome Silver enamel and a bit of black on the flexible brake line section. The tires/wheels are out of the Monogram kit.

Combat Warplanes / Re: 2AF Training Airfields Mini-Tour
« on: October 29, 2011, 03:24:06 AM »
Hi, Letipapa!

Many of the airfields that were constructed in the States for training purposes were considered as temporary facilities. Most of the smaller buildings at the Second Air Force stations were designed with a practical lifespan of only a three to five years. The lion's share of the hangars at most of the Heavy and Very Heavy Bombardment training stations were wooden and also not expected to be around for a long time. The runways, taxiways, and parking aprons were poured concrete with no reinforcing rods or mesh, also considered temporary.

The Army was able to close down some stations in late 1944 (saving the taxpayers a lot of money in the process) and the rest of the temporary fields were put on Standby status by December of '45. After that many of the buildings were sold at auction and dismantled or moved to farms, cities, etc. for other uses. Some airfields became civilian airports and some reverted back to farming.

As to saving the historical structures still remaining, the local governments here act much as you stated about your part of the world--much has been lost over the years as "liability" issues are used as excuses to tear down what remains. I suppose the general public would rather not think about military installations as being of any special historic value. That leaves those of us who care about that side of history to do what we can.

I'd hoped to finish decaling the Lead Sled last night but had a minor "disaster"....... :-danger

Note to self: Oily finger makes fingerprint on Metalizer finishes........ :-wall :-wall :-wall

So, one wing needed some repair work, which I just finished. The use of Metalizer is great but once in a while the builder does something stupid. :-red No photo of the damage as I was too angry with my stupidity to take one. On the positive side, it's really easy to repair such mistakes by careful masking and reapplying the appropriate shade, then repolishing it to the right sheen. As No.1 once said, there is always something that happens with every project!

The F2G is a favorite of mine, and one of the first models I did a lot of research and kitbashing on. This is my old Otaki conversion done in the late seventies. Sorry it looks dirty and nasty, but I decided to leave this one as it is and just put it in the back of the display.

Srecko is right, I have a mold of the early R-1820 you need and also a propeller and spinner. I ended up using a set of Mig-21 main gear legs from an ancient kit on my Interceptor also, but there should be a rather easy substitute in your spares box.

Thanks, guys--here is a shot of the cockpit with the seat installed and continuing forward with all the little bits and parts. I need to finish this one to make room for its huge brother, the F-105 that I've started.

Nice subject as the T doesn't get enough attention, I think.

A question: Has anyone examined or built a Zvezda 1/48 Bf-109F? I have a chance to buy this at a discount and wonder if it's as nice as it seems to be. Thanks in advance!
