Title: Octavia
Post by: draken35 on November 05, 2016, 11:45:47 AM
Well, having finished the figure for my CorsEarth and as I want to give another try to the Abteilung 502 Oil Flesh set, I will begin a new one: a Roman woman at bath.
I've decided to name her Octavia. Why? She was the sister of the first Roman Emperor Augustus and more than that, I've seen the Rome serie on TV and found so cute the actress interpretating Octavia...  :-love

First stage is preparation. Figure was sanded and the original base (very poor) was replaced by a home made one: Evergreen and Miliput.
Figure is placed on a work base (the cap of an aftershave bottle...)

After having tried to fill the little gaps with cyano (not a good result; when sanding all the cyano came out of the figure) I've used the tip given by a friend of mine: to enlarge the little gaps and then to fill them with miliput...

you can work with cyano but first you have to sand it a bit to scratch the surface

Yes, indeed.
I'm still trying to obtain a good surface, using miliput and/or cyano. Not happy for the time being...

Back on Octavia...

I needed the help of a friend specialized in figure painting, to try to obtain a good surface on the figure. The metal of the figure was full of little gaps... And some are already there! But oK, that's enough... Next step!

Base coat of acrylic flesh paint (Tamiya XF-15)

OK. Since last time, I had some trouble with Octavia... During a painting session, she falled out of my hands on the ground. Face first... So the nose was totally broken.
I tried to repare myself but it was uneasy and I didn't obtain a good result. So, I've sent Octavia to my friend Dominique Jadoul that is excellent for esthetical surgery: the new nose of Octavia is perfect!
Dominique gived me the figure back yesterday, during the Mons expo.
So today I've applied a new base color; testing for the first time the AK Flesh Base spray. Useful and nice result! But due to the odors, better to do that outside when the weather is sunny enough...

This base is enamel based?
Title: Re: Octavia
Post by: draken35 on August 19, 2018, 06:57:24 PM
It's not indicated on the can; but: "not affected by acrylic, enamel or extreme weathering"...
Sounds at first use similar to the Gunze Mr Surfacer cans...

Compared with Gunze, how it is?

Can is shorter but cheaper.
Result is absolutely similar and it smells the same odor

Octavia gives me problems...
After a second spray session, I constated a bubble on the right arm. I tried to sand the bubble smoothly... The flesh paint seems to form a plastic coat and all the flesh was removed on the arm... So, it was necessary to remove all the paint... In the process, the nose made in miliput disappeared... Dominique will do the job again for me; but finally my first impression on that AK Flesh can was not the good one. I don't like such a product that you cannot work on it after having been sprayed on the figure.
Best way for me remains to use white base then Gunze or Tamiya flesh as second base...

Topis on hold until new nose will be made...  :-wall

Octavia is back at home with her new nose after a little bit of surgery (and miliput) done by my friend Dominique Jadoul!
Base of painting: Tamiya XF-15 with a little bit of white and Vallejo red for the cloth.

Still trying to perfectionate the painting of red hair with acrylic paint, I've decided to paint red hair to Octavia...
I will present you a step-by-step progression.
First, the base is Vallejo Flat Brown

Thank you!

Third stage for the red hair: another drybrush but this time with a mix of yellow (Yriel Yellow from Citadel Colors) and orange (Hot Orange from Game colors).
After having taken the photos I constated I've forgotten the eyebrows... Corrected. Base of Flat Brown, immediately followed with the yellow/orange mix...

Guess what, friends?

...Octavia falled onto the ground for the third time!!! Nose not broken this time but her right leg loosed some paint...
So: new acrylic white base; new acrylic flesh base; acrylic marron brown as base for (red) hair; the cloth becomes green (acrylic base).

Normally figure is more secure now with the new material I use...
