January 27, 1944 - the Day of the complete liberation by Soviet troops of Leningrad from siege by Nazi troops.

January 1943 was a turning point in the battle for Leningrad. January 27, forces of the Leningrad (army General Leonid Govorov), Volkhov (General of the army K. A. Meretskov) and 2nd Baltic (General of the army M. M. Popov) fronts in interaction with the Baltic fleet, Ladoga and Onega flotillas carried out the Leningrad-Novgorod operation, finally break the blockade of Leningrad.

January 27, 1944, Soviet troops completely removed lasted 872 days of the Nazi blockade of the city!

that was one of the most brutal sieges in history, so many lost lives.... I read an article years ago, there was fights for every floor and even for a single room, there was a building described as a heavy war theater, one floor was held by germans and the next one by soviets and they did fight each other for the floor.... Can't even imagine.....
