Title: Gladiatrix training
Post by: draken35 on July 21, 2018, 02:55:01 PM
I falled in love with the production of "El Viejo Dragon" from Spain. Those figures are very well sculpted and... sexy!
As for "l'emmerdeuse" I will try to paint the figures with oil paints; but first a coat of acrylic is better. I airbrushed Tamiya XF-15 Flesh on all the figures and have begun to paint details with other acrylic paints (Vallejo, Citadel Colors...)

First try with oil paint: one of gladiatrixes will be a Nubian  :))
I've just painted with oil paints the flesh. Quite happy with the result.

I'm not working as figure painters do, but I don't care for that: my goal is to have fun (and to represent nice boobs of course!).

The jar is also oil painted...

Always wonder how do you fix this cap to ground to avoid fly away under airbrush spray flow pressure?

Simple: the figure is fixed with metal parts. I drill the feey, place the metal part and this one is also fixed in the cap

The two other gladiatrixes received acrylic grey paint. Second photo shows the actual state of the four women. It remains lot of work but it's fun to do.
The accessories are oil painted; the base received a white primer.

Hair of the blond gladiareix werre more yellow than blond. I've corrected that; but still it's the acrylic base...
And speaking about base, that one is finished and ready for the placement of those splendid little womens

Thank you!

Today I've paint the loin cloth of my Nubian, using three tones of green. I've also painted another gladiatrix with the Abteilung 502 Flesh set "as is" but I'm unhappy with the result, the flesh is too light. I will repaint the figure but mixing the paints together...

Time to resume the work here  :-green
during all that time I have read many articles and books about figure painting; hesitating between acrylic and oil paints.
One of my last acquisition was the AK book about painting figures with two sets of acrylic paints.
Result can be good for some experts, but not for me... And the paint is matt... Real flesh and skin is not matt.
So, after having tried those paints on the nymphs... Well... I'm busy to remove the paint (bath of methanol) and I will use oil paints.
For the little gladiatrixes; I've painted with Abteilung 502 oil paints "Flesh set" the three Eurasian ones.
There are placed on the base but it's just for the photo of course; lot of painting works remain to be done...

I like how you do all those figures and about all commercial books about book paintings- I am not sure they are any better in final results from what Verlinden publish decades ago ;) so keep on your way

I totally agree with you my friend.
More than that: the universe of figure painters is the more hard you can find (at least here in Belgium): how to apply the light; how to paint some uniform colors (having served in the Belgian army I can affirm that there are not two uniforms that are exactly the same!)... I've chose to paint figures for myself; not to show them in expo or contest (exception: figures painted for RetrokiT, like the tiny Star Wars rebel pilots, that Dominique shows on his stand). As I'm painting figures for myself, I just want to paint them a way that is pleasant for me...
So I have tested acrylics for skin; I prefer oil even if I'm not mastering the technique of oil painting

I've decided to transform the blonde gladiatrix into a red one, because I think I'm mastering red hair now  :))
The 4 figures received a wash on the gray clothes

Finished!!!
To paint the helmets, I've used the AK True Metal paints. Don't like how those paints smell (it's just annoying, not unsupportable), but result is excellent.
