Here's the latest project on my desk, the Trumpeter two-seat Delta Dart. This is another build for my friend at work and a long story goes with this one that I'll tell later.
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF027/IMG_2855_zpsetoupgii.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF027/IMG_2855_zpsetoupgii.jpg.html)
It's a nice kit with a bit better detail than the old Monogram model and also has recessed panel lines. The main great point of this one is that I don't have to do an expensive vacuform conversion of an A model!
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF043/IMG_2889_zpskzctjxpe.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF043/IMG_2889_zpskzctjxpe.jpg.html)
-
All right- lets see the masterpiece :-ok
-
Well, I don't think it will be that good, but I'll make it a good addition to my friend's collection of Delta Darts!
This PE fret comes with the kit and will be a good thing (I confess I have gotten very spoiled by using the excellent Eduard seat harnesses!). This will be entirely from the box with only aftermarket squadron markings. We cornered the market on 49th FIS decal sheets a while back knowing we were going to do this one.
-
nice start, looking forward see it done !
-
Thanks!
Small progress as there isn't enough time in a day!

-
I am still impressed with landing gear ;)
-
:-ok
-
Thanks!
No.1, this landing gear set is plastic, the one from the Trumpeter kit. I was debating using the SAC set on this one but decided to adapt it to the drone project.
-
There is a lot of interior detail in this one and it took a lot of green paint! The color call-outs and most references show standard interior green FS 34151 for this purpose but the real thing is somewhat darker. I used 34127 which matches what was used in the later days of the F-106 service:

-
Very crisp paint lines and edges!!!
-
This one sends decals for the side panels and instruments. I used the main flight instrument decals and hand painted the rest since the detail molded on the parts is quite good.
-
Looks very nice
-
Thanks!
This really screams to have more detailing done to it, but the new owner isn't sure yet if he wants canopy up or down. If we make it open I'll add some extra equipment in the space between the cockpits. If closed that area is covered by a panel. Mike (the new owner) is unsure about the canopy so I'll press on with the build and add detail later!
-
Here is the engine afterburner segment and main landing gear bay assembly after paint:

Then the bay goes into the lower wing with the drone as a backdrop:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF050/IMG_2908_zpsirhavjnh.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF050/IMG_2908_zpsirhavjnh.jpg.html)
-
Details look good on kit
-
Yes, everything is crisp and the wheelwell details match the Monogram kit closely. The designers at Monogram back in those days did a great job of research on the Century series. Monogram's only problem was using raised panel lines and Trumpeter has delicate engraved lines instead.
I've read in various places that Trumpeter just copied the old kit, but I would rather think they used the Monogram offering as a reference starting point for their own molds. After all, if both are relatively accurate they would look about the same!
-
As I know, Monogram in past has always strictly refer to archive documentation when work on model projects so in most cases, their kits are very accurate
-
Yes, too bad they did the raised lines, but I still have enjoyed their kits a lot!!
-
nice details, very well done
-
Thanks!
Here's the next stage, fitting all the interior parts and joining the fuselage halves. This is a little complicated since there are so many subassemblies involved--nose gear well, cockpit, weapons bay and engine--but the fit of each part is superb and test fitting showed it would be easy. All went quite well and then the vertical fin was attached:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF052/IMG_2915_zps6h5x4hzf.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF052/IMG_2915_zps6h5x4hzf.jpg.html)
-
Join look precise and smooth
-
Yes, good fit. The vertical fin joint isn't perfect and this is a ninety degree angle that is slightly difficult to fill without losing some of the delicate detailing. I've run a bead of cyano on the joint but it will still require some filler.
-
:-ok
-
very nice,well done
-
I've made some small progress on this one, starting with the buildup of the intakes and then some final assembly of major parts. The Trumpeter folks did a nice job of engineering the fit, especially between the fuselage sides and top wing joint.

Once the majority of filling and priming was complete it was time to fit the canopy parts. These fit very well, also!
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF060/IMG_2929_zpsshwbw1ik.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF060/IMG_2929_zpsshwbw1ik.jpg.html)
Then the canopy was masked and the brownish-yellow seal between the transparency and frames was sprayed. After that dried the seal was masked and ADC grey sprayed on the canopy and the drop tanks:

Working on painting and Metalizing various small panels and such, as well as the radome and anti-glare panels is ongoing. Next will be working on the missiles and getting them ready for paint, then some decals!

-
Look beautiful :-clap
-
Nice!
-
Thank you! It was quite nice to concentrate on modeling for a little while......rather than chores!
-
Missiles are assembled and sanded. I've decided to paint the Genie as an inert practice round. Mike, the former crew chief on F-106s, said that a practice missile was loaded from time-to-time to maintain the efficiency of ordnance crews.

When the white is fully dry I'll mask the Aim-4s and paint the red aft segments.

Genie, most powerful missile ever ;)

-
excellent ! well done !
-
Waouw, great!
-
On Saturday this Dart received a coat of clear gloss. Sunday morning, over coffee, I decided to add the decals and all went on in the normal manner. Last night I decided the decals had set long enough that I could apply some clear over them.......this was a mistake! The fuselage roundels simply wrinkled up and fell apart. I can't be sure why, since they are Microscale and I've used this sheet twice before on the other F-106 builds. Whatever the reason, I stripped these off and used some old Revell insignia in the spares kit. After clear coat the seats and rear instrument panel went in and more assembly is just around the corner.

Incredible :-obey :-obey
-
looking excellent mate, well done !
-
Thanks!
Here's the next couple of parts added. The radar instrument in the rear canopy mount goes in with a plastic and a photoetch part and fits just fine. On the cockpit itself the fold-up panel and canopy actuator fit well and in the second photo it's all sitting together. Trumpeter also sends optional parts to represent the canopy closed if you wish.

-
great kit!
-
excellent !
-
Thanks, and this build is almost completely out-of-the box. So far all I have added was some wiring on the rear instrument panel that is quite visible with canopy open. Eventually I will build one of these for myself and go fully into detailing the "between cockpit" area. For my customer the extra wiring is sufficient.
-
This one is slowly moving into final assembly stage with the addition of the landing gear, weapons bay doors and Genie in the rear bay:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF089/IMG_3042_zpsfcggippm.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF089/IMG_3042_zpsfcggippm.jpg.html)
The four missiles have also been affixed to the launch rails and support hangars. These will be last to install just to keep from damaging them while handling the model:

-
:-ok
-
Thanks, mate!
This is just a pleasure to assemble and begs for some extra superdetailing. I'm more and more excited to build one for myself soon!
-
superb mate !
-
Hello !
Simply amazing. :-eek
Jicéhem :-wave

Hello again, it's been a long time! We've been on holiday and I've only now been able to move forward on this one. As you can see, the missile bay is now fully armed and I really like the idea that Trumpeter gives the option of lowered launching rails. This is a job that really can try your patience, though, and requires about four hands to keep the rail support arms in place and matching each rail to the actuator:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF090/IMG_4050_zpsb0caqkdc.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF090/IMG_4050_zpsb0caqkdc.jpg.html)

Also the drop tanks were permanently attached and then the model was placed on its wheels and the speedbrakes were glued in place:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF090/IMG_4047_zpsrwhjtmh9.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF090/IMG_4047_zpsrwhjtmh9.jpg.html)

Final touch are interesting to see :-ok
-
Hello :-salut
Very beautiful job. The unit badge is of those I like most. The one who drew this badge had a brilliant idea by representing an eagle which opens its wings.
If I remeber well, the 1/72 scale kit (F-106A) by Hasegawa has the missiles also on lowered missile rails.

Looks excellent !

Nice!!!

I'll bet no one thought I was ever going to finish this build. Finally it has crossed the finish line. The model represents one of the first F-106s that my friend was given responsibility for when he joined the 49th FIS. He mentioned that he launched and recovered this airplane several times when he was first assigned to the flight line as a new guy.

-
Thanks, friends.
My buddy is quite happy with his "fleet" and I wouldn't be surprised if he requested another one of these someday in the future.
-
I'm adding another Dart to my friend's collection!
He has been wanting me to build another airplane he worked on, and this one with a twist--I'm adding the Gatling gun pod that was optional on the F-106. The kit is a Trumpeter F-106A and the gun pod is a vacuformed wing pylon from an ancient 1/48 Ju 88 vacuform that I've never finished.
-
:-ok
-
:-obey :-obey vacuform are now forgotten kits but there was so many subjects in past
-
looks nice !
-
Thanks, friends!
Yes, vacuform kits are still waiting on my shelves to be built........I don't even know who the manufacturer was but the kit isn't too bad.
-
Update on the Trumpeter F-106A, the kit goes together just like the B model with little problems. Just a small amount of filler at various seams. (Disregard the Bf 109 wings--a new thread will be coming for those)
-
:-ok
-
Red filler solve everything ;)
-
Looks like the fittings are not so bad, well done mate !
-
This F-106 is continuing in parallel with Daniel's Mirage 5--we're both at relatively the same stage:
Modellius, the fit of this Trumpeter kit is really nice and doesn't require a lot of filling. I probably could have done a better job of joining the two fuselage halves and used less red filler. The only tricky part of building this kit (the two seat version was easier in this respect) is getting the nose gear box and cockpit sandwiched into the fuselage halves. It takes numerous dry-fittings to get the instrument panel just right before everything can be glued in place.
-
All the major parts are put together and time for primer:
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
:-ok
-
Good !
-
I've tried something new with this big Delta, painting the underside in the ADC grey first. I'll let this dry a few days and then start on the top. The last couple F-106s I built ended up with some "wet paint" issues on the lower part when I was painting the upper.
-
Maybe mist from airbrush make that problem?
-
Maybe mist from airbrush make that problem?
No, actually it was the painter's fingerprint that caused me problems! On the last two F-106s that I painted I was holding the airplane in my hand while painting the topside and slipped a fingerprint onto the underside. This way will work better and it gave me a chance to see if my old ADC grey was still sprayable.
-
A quick end to this long-delayed thread. During my time at home I completed this F-106A for my buddy. On this one he wanted the 20mm gun installed in the weapons bay so I scratchbuilt the fairing from parts of an ancient Ju-88 vacuform kit I have. It's now on his display shelf along with the others I've constructed for him.
-
Nice !
-
Thanks!
I'm curious if my friend will ask for another F-106--I've purchased another decal sheet for his unit just in case.....
-
Lovely one and hope your friend will ask for one more :-razz
-
By the time he's done with me I will have built most of the planes in his Squadron! (To be truthful, I'm thinking about building one of these for my own shelf......)
-
Looks good !
