Here is the engine afterburner segment and main landing gear bay assembly after paint:

Then the bay goes into the lower wing with the drone as a backdrop:

Yes, everything is crisp and the wheelwell details match the Monogram kit closely. The designers at Monogram back in those days did a great job of research on the Century series. Monogram's only problem was using raised panel lines and Trumpeter has delicate engraved lines instead.

I've read in various places that Trumpeter just copied the old kit, but I would rather think they used the Monogram offering as a reference starting point for their own molds. After all, if both are relatively accurate they would look about the same!

As I know, Monogram in past has always strictly refer to archive documentation when work on model projects so in most cases, their kits are very accurate

Yes, too bad they did the raised lines, but I still have enjoyed their kits a lot!!

Thanks!

Here's the next stage, fitting all the interior parts and joining the fuselage halves. This is a little complicated since there are so many subassemblies involved--nose gear well, cockpit, weapons bay and engine--but the fit of each part is superb and test fitting showed it would be easy. All went quite well and then the vertical fin was attached:

Yes, good fit. The vertical fin joint isn't perfect and this is a ninety degree angle that is slightly difficult to fill without losing some of the delicate detailing. I've run a bead of cyano on the joint but it will still require some filler.

I've made some small progress on this one, starting with the buildup of the intakes and then some final assembly of major parts. The Trumpeter folks did a nice job of engineering the fit, especially between the fuselage sides and top wing joint.

Once the majority of filling and priming was complete it was time to fit the canopy parts. These fit very well, also!

Then the canopy was masked and the brownish-yellow seal between the transparency and frames was sprayed. After that dried the seal was masked and ADC grey sprayed on the canopy and the drop tanks:
