Trimaster He-162 1/48
« on: April 04, 2014, 06:51:46 AM »
Last spring I was able to finally find the old Trimaster He-162 at a good price, so it went into my Luftwaffe stack:

This is a really nice little model! Lots of PE parts and much nicely detailed white metal items, too. So simple to build, this is going together very rapidly. First I built up the instrument panel parts, partially of cast metal, plastic, and photoetched instrument panel and rudder pedals. The ejection seat is nicely cast in metal also. These parts all were given a coat of RLM66, then the main landing gear bay was built up. The engineering of this little jet is quite nice--the seat, nose gear strut and instrument panel parts all add to the weight needed to keep it sitting on the tricycle gear. There is a well made metal plug that fills the nose of the fuselage and finishes the weight needed. Once this was ready the RLM02 was sprayed on the gear bay and fuselage and the fuselage halves were then joined. All of this took so little time, and the fit was quite nice. Finally in this first session I put the cowling sections together:

I love it! (I have read some reviews that place the Tamiya kit as being better, but this is still a joy to build in my eyes.)

The hardest part of this project so far has been the paint scheme. I specifically didn't want to build one with the red arrow on the nose (I never liked this for some reason--I don't know why.....) so that limits the choices quite a lot! A scheme has been selected and painting should start this weekend.

Here's a bit more progress on the Salamander. The final assembly was underway and I realized I'd forgotten to show anything of the cockpit:

Also you now have an idea of the color scheme!

A scheme has been selected and painting should start this weekend.

Among the known He 162 As found in flyable condition, there were only three that didn't have the red arrow...

These three are just perfect! I was really leaning towards "M20" for some time and I still might build one in that scheme later.

Hello :-salut

Without the red arrow, you have also some prototypes with an Skz, such as He 162 M23, WNr 220006, VI+IP which was found intact at München-Riem and built in the "Languste-Werk". This prototype is apart by the fact that, at a moment in its life, it received a new wing root fairing.
There is also the very first He 162 A-1 with MK 108 guns, WNr 310001 first flown at Bernburg by Hermann Steckhahn on 15 February 1945.
One detail : the ailerons were RLM 82 on upper- and undersurfaces because they were interchageable. This is the case also for He 162 A-1, WNr 310027 from Junkers-Zweigwerk at Bernburg. Pay attention : the armament of this plane is composed of two MK 108, not MG 151/20 (long barrels) as on the A-2 represented by the Trimaster kit. On the A-1, the openings of the ejector chutes were larger to permit ejection of the 30 mm cases attached to their links.

Tamiya's He 162 is better than Trimaster's only by the fact that the Trimaster kit is a bit too long... Not visible when the kit is alone and not by side of the Tamiya one...

Hello mate,

It's He 162 M20 (A-03 ?), WNr 220003 (Skz VI+IM but not painted on fuselage) built in the Wien "Languste Werk"/Heidfeld. First flight on 10.2.45. Tested centre of gravity. Armed with MG 151/20. Found at München-Riem by Allies.

Yes, it is good to have this information--I am quite probably going to build another of these, either Trimaster or Tamiya, in the future!

This little fellow is now finished. I was intrigued by the unpainted, damaged machine in a couple of photos that I have and decided to use these markings. Jicehem, I have information that this was found at the Junkers assembly shops in Bernberg. Is this data correct?

I decided to complete it intact (canopy and windscreen are smashed in photos) as it would have looked before the Allies arrived. I have no idea if this airplane ever flew but it looks substantially complete except for paint.

The fuselage was finished in Metalizer with a primer grey nose and neutral grey paint used as "filler" at the panel seams and rivet lines. The national markings came from the kit (1988 issue and they worked beautifully) and the "27" numerals were found on a sheet that Nico sent me some time ago!
