Title: Tornado IDS
Post by: modellius on October 17, 2017, 06:55:06 PM
Finally I got me a work bench where I moved so I can start to build models. As a first one I picked out Hobby Boss Tornado IDS in 1/48 scale with a lot of " goodies " some are here right now, a few ones to follow. It will be RSAF ( Royal Saudi Air Force ), can't resist to the colors on it.....
And here is what it would be build of

The fun and games had began  :) I started with the cockpit and seats, the seats will be the combination of Aires, Eduard, original box parts and scratch build, and the cockpit will be original box parts, Eduard and scratch.... First I glued some main parts together, putty and sanding will follow, some original parts like wires had been removed and I will replace them with real wire, the pedals are positioned as the tail will be on the end. Here are some first photos of the start

the cockpit detailing has been continued, first I detailed the inner fuselage parts, since Eduard provides only two parts for this area by looking the photos I had found on the net I made the rest from styreene and PE left-overs, this area is finished, rest of the cockpit to follow.....

Thank you friends !

About 90% of detailing is done, a few more wires to come but only after painting

thank you friends !

while I'm waiting for the last detail in the cockpit I moved on to the wings and wheel bay. on the wings I installed the Eduard's PE parts for the flaps, fits in perfectly and the result is good as well. As a next step I started to work on main wheel bays, first Eduard's PE parts, then some scratch building of a bunch of " stuff " before the wiring

Thanks

and now all the " gadgets " are done in main wheel bays, wires to follow... The air brakes are installed as well, a surprise for me was that Quickboost and Edurad gives two very different variations of the same thing.... So, after checking the photos I founded out they both was right, so I took the easier way, Quickboost.....

And the photo boot is working just fine  :)

Thank you friends !

In the last period I'm working some crazy shifts so don't have much time for modeling, but still I made some progress on the left landing gear, i'ts not completed yet but not too far now, right side still to come..... The assembly of the kit parts is very delicate, a lot of attention is needed to get it right and a lot of dry fitting !

And the last pieces of the puzzle arrived today

Yes, I should make some good deal with some wire factory  :-green :-green :-green

However, one done one to go..... The 3 unmounted wires are going in the wheel and one is the landing light cable so these will go on later

Thank you !

I was a bit lazy during the holidays, but still I made some progress. The nose wheel bay, furst I installed Eduard's PE parts and the started with the wires, still a few miles of wires to come......

After a few very heavy problems I had with my AB compressor, which are fortunately solved, I could start to paint, first step was the cockpit main color, than the black, and after this I could install some Eduard's pre-painted part before I continue the wire work and detail painting.....

Thank you friends !

The fuselage is over complicated, the rear sections two halves are bottom and top, the front is left and right side, even the nose section is two parts.......Probably for manufacturer's easier mold of different variants..... A lot of putty will be needed as I can see......However, I started on engine and intakes, it's a disaster, pin marks, nothing similar to the real thing. The front blades of the engine are provided in the box, but after mounting it in the fuselage they are too low, so cutting, adding are done to put them in to right position. The intakes are junk, a lot of pin marks, missing areas and its all visible, they are big so all of these needed a correction, also there are some missing parts in the intake which are not provided by Hobby Boss and Eduard as well so more scratchbuild to come. And due to large intakes I will need to figure out some sort of intake tunnels between the intake parts and engine blades......Back to the cockpit, there is a missing part also, above the front instrument panel, even Eduard has not given them, and in the rear it was a gap which I filled with styreene sheets ..... Fun and games have been started indeed.... The last two pis are from britmodeler.com to show you the missing parts

Thank you friends !

After endless hours of putty and sending the Hobby Boss intakes finally I manage to make the intake tunnel, the section between the intake part of the fuselage and the engine blades. Well to be honest it is a very, very ugly construction looking from the outside ( this is the first time ever I made such a thing, and the right one was the first, difference is very visible, left is much better ) but look in the inside ( the visible part ) is actually very good, I'm satisfied, well worth of time and energy put in it. After making some last details on the intake inside and putting them on their place I call this part done.... Finally..... More to come

Excellent work on the intake trunks! Most folks would just glue the fuselage together and forget about it, but you've done it right!!
Title: Re: Tornado IDS
Post by: modellius on January 30, 2018, 08:32:47 PM
Some fuselage build, very poor fittings, lot of extra work, the worst is the intake, on the upper side I had to remove the part of the original plastic and replace it with some PE frame left-over, by this I got more realistic look, and started with the exhaust, poor fitting here as well. In these sanding and replacing ( a ton of putty as well ) most of the fine surface details are gone, remaking them will be an adventure...... In case this isn't enough I managed to make some damage as well, mostly on the landing gear, fortunately no permanent damage, all is reparable, but extra time is needed.....
