OK, now here is my actual "work-in-progress": the Spad VII from Roden.
I'm building that kit for a group build ("Avions de la Grande Guerre") on the French forum Maquette Garden.
maquettes de véhicules et figurines militaires et (http://maquette-garden.forumactif.com/index.htm)
I'm responsible of that Group Build.
Avions de la Grande Guerre (http://maquette-garden.forumactif.com/avions-de-la-grande-guerre-f21/)
Like Maquette Garden is principally a forum for tanks, I'm trying to give to the participating members some anecdots, tips, etc on what concerns WWI aviation...
Well, enough said, here is my build:
I will also use the photoetch of PART
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad009.JPG)
And my documentation source will of course be the following:
I will build the aircraft of Sous-lieutenant Ciselet:
photo via Belgian Aviation History Association (http://www.baha.be)
Some putty needed
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad015.JPG)
the photoetch parts are excellent, but I will not use some of them: so, here, the PE elements are not large enough
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad022.JPG)
The engine. All the elements are not placed because the engine cover will be closed.
-
Some holes...
The placement of the PE louves asked for some work too:
Carefully press on the louves...
...will give you a very nice result
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad038.JPG)
-
Now it's time to remove some plastic
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad042.JPG)
...And to use Gator's Grip glue: the time needed for that glue to dry is an advantage for the perfect positioning of the little parts
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad045.JPG)
The excess of glue is removed (before drying) with a brush and some water
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad050.JPG)
I Like it!
-
I've forgotten a little trapdoor!
Same technique of course...
I've also begun the work on the louves of the part going under the motor. Not really easy. And the part is not yet correctly formed...
The build of the radiator will be fun too...
One hour was needed to prepare those tiny things...
Total: 130 (65 of each). Following the instructions from PART, only 49 of each seem to be needed. I will check my doc to verify if there are other possible places for use.
I've used Klir (equivalent of future) to glue the little parts.
Klir, water, toothpicks, and a 3/0 brush (not on the photo)
With the brush, I put a little drop of Klir on the place of the part
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad057.JPG)
The part is placed with an humidified toothpick
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad058.JPG)
A drop of klir again, to "secure" the work... Then, placement of the last element of the ensemble
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad059.JPG)
And here is the final result:
Not an easy work to do. Nerviously it was hard... So, the second panel of the engine cover will be made next time.
I have finished with another drop of Klir on all the elements.
-
I've finished the second part:
It just took me 1/2 hour...
I was a little bit disapointed by PART...
I found the PE radiator so fine... But it doesn't match with the kit part: a little bit longer, fitting not exactly
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad063.JPG)
Simply imposible to put in the kit...
Even for little details...
-
I've decided to opt for a mix between the PE and the part of the kit:
That will be OK when in place.
But, really, not the best PE element from PART.
Some progress:
Use of 3D paint to repair the damaged rivets (when removed from sprue)...
... The element was attached at 4 points...
...Mr Surfacer 1000...
...And PE...
I don't like Mr Surfacer... It's a product I can live without. I have made some rectifications with liquid glue + plastic. I have also used that mix for two BIG holes in the propeller...
Sanding of the putty on the wings. Three little rectifications needed (I used my mix...)
Some elements of the cockpit are assembled
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad076.JPG)
And, again, the use of "my" glue is needed!
-
Time to take a look on the rudder now!
PART gives 4 éléments to make the rudder
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad079.JPG)
There are fine but not perfect...
Kit's rudder is nice but perfectible. Here is the work:
...And here is the result:
The windshield asked for some reflexion:
The one of the kit is thick, but also a little bit opaque.
The one of PART is too fine and impossible for me to work on it and obtain a good form, with the film...
So I've decided to use the kit's part, but that will ask for some extra work to obtain a good result.
I've also begun to work on the Vickers
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad089.JPG)
Links, top of the photo: what I've removed from the kit part.
It's far from the end, for that Vickers...
-
I've encountered another unexpected problem today...
As I had not many time to work on the Vickers, I just decided to remove some parts from the sprue. As always, I'm trying the fitting and... ouch...
...Not good at all...
So I've sanded the elements. Going better now...
...but look here!!!
I've opted for the following solution: to make the hole larger.
...on the left side the corrected part, on the right side the original one
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad094.JPG)
The final result:
-
I've removed from the PE sheet all the elements of the Vickers. I've sanded the vickers but some corrections are needed so, no possibility to continue today with that weapon...
...So, back to another funny game!
Light sanding...
"I" = "Inside"
...here is the "outside"
On each time there is not ONE but TWO PE part !!!
Finished:
-
I'm always working with PE:
Vickers is finished. Not the best possible result, but my best possible result...
-
I've sanded the wings, removing the little "metalic" elements that are replaced by PE.
Lower wing
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad108.JPG)
Upper wing
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad110.JPG)
NB: The green color is just 3D paint for tissue. That will represent the cables.
Here is where I am actually...
-
Fascinating upgrades on kit and great work with metal!! This will be great build to watch!
-
Thank you, Srecko!
I'm far from the end I'm afraid... The Roden kit is nice but not perfect; it's not Wingnut Wings! I will have lot of work to do, but anyway it's a pleasant build and I want to make great job for that one...
-
Very nice and clean work so far. :-flo
-
Thank you again!
-
Seems like a professional dedication to details (and unfortunate Roden's flaws in production)... So far so good! :-ok
Waiting for the progress...
-
Nice job! :-flo
-
Just few question...
- is it more easy to press louvres on soft wood instead over the edge of glass?
- I hear for Gator glue, is it thick density? It is interesting as well it is acrylic
- turnbuckles... what method you are using to make it?
:-wave
-
Thanks again for your kind comments!
Srecko,
- I think it could be good too to press louves on soft wood - Perheaps even better than my method... I didn't have thinked to soft wood...
- Gator glue haves the density of PVC glue. Very interresting to place little parts that you need a little bit time to adjust or position perfectly. Te reverse of the medal is that you cannot use that glue for fast work because she needs a looong time to dry - But when dry, it's hard!!! Another advantage is that when placing a part, if you have glue in excess, you simply remove the excess with a paintbrush with water...
- For the turnbuckles, I will use the method of "Agiosdimitrios" that you can see on Theaerodrome:
http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/models/47760-roland-cii-1-48-eduard-8.html#post519560
-
Good about the Gator, it look also to be perfect for other parts, like transparent. Interesting method for turnbuckles, I use method described in one special issue of Japanese magazine Model Art.
-
Can you tell me more about your turnbuckles method?
-
Thin wire, make a loop around another thin wire but made from steel, hard steel. Turning until get loop just around hard wire.
-
Very interresting! I will have to give a try to both method before to decide wheter to use for the Spad...
-
After a few day "out of business" due to professional reasons, I'm back on the Spad...
The exhausts: here is what I can to as best with the PE. I'm not really happy of that...
More than that, the attachment system to the fuselage is complex (two PE parts), too fine and too long. I think I will use the kit parts, that I will try to ameliorate.
I've also tried to form the trap under the engine. Unsucessfully...
I will try again, but later, after the demi-fuselage will be glued together. But I'm thinking to "B" plan: the use of the kit part that, of course, I will have to ameliorate too...
Some little progress:
The ailerons
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad116.JPG)
The wheels
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad117.JPG)
...Putty and sanding needed of course...
The actual bench:
-
Looks fine to me and I think that this will look good when complete. It is true that PE parts give power to model but can not be always perfect.
-
We have all or own limits with PE parts... And, as always with PART photoecth, some parts are simply too hard to use successfully...
-
Again, a little bit of work with PE before painting...
Not less than 8 parts for that result - But from far better than the kit part (only one element)
OK, ready for the airbrush now!
-
This subject is one of those when we can just seat and watch with pleasure :-clap This assembly preparation is wonderful!
-
As No.1 said, just watching with pleasure :-jump
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you very much!
-
Back to another problem:
The PE part is very hard to form correctly; and I've constated that it's larger than the kit part. So, bad fitting obviously...
So, we will use the kit part!!!
...that will of course ask for many work but the fit will be correct. All is said.
Work in progress
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad122.JPG)
Break after two hours, to remain zen...
-
Uh... :( look like nightmare and it look like it need so much time to solve properly. Is it possible to cut separate gills from etched parts and to fit it to original part?
-
Possible, Srecko. I'm envisaging that option. Or maybe to use aluminium paper. Or maybe to use nothing, as that part is on the undersuface of the fuselage...
It's not a nightmare, but I will not recommend that kit for beginner...
-
Outstanding! I enjoy looking all this! :-love :-obey :-salut
-
I will try to post a "step-by-step" action when I will continue the opening of the louves
-
Step-by-step:
Two holes are made, on the extremities of each louve.
The plastic is removed with a cutter
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad124.JPG)
And here is the final result - A little bit of sanding is needed yet:
... There are 108 louves on that element...
-
Huge work :-clap
-
No comment! :-eek :-eek :-eek :-eek :-eek :-eek
:-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you!!!
OK, now we can start the painting job! First of all, as ever I use white primer (Tamiya XF-2 & airbrush)
No big problem but the propeller revealed under the primer a little lack of putty... Correction in progress...
-
Basic interior paint is nice :-ok
-
Very nice work :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you! Next step soon I hope...
-
I admire your clearness in work. All in order, very, very cool. :-obey :-obey :-obey :-love :-wave
-
Thank you!
No photos today, but I've sanded the propeller, and prepared the parts for painting - but also prepared the order of use of paints: first dope, then aluminium, and lastly wood...
-
My rythm of work will diminue until end of january, due to professional examen in preparation... I will just do a sitting per week...
...But we still are in progress!
And I come back with that problem of "louves" part under the engine: on www.theaerodrome.com, a POlish modeller used a technic that I will, too, give a try:
First, you take the spare part
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad128.JPG)
...that will serve as support for the PE element.
A little bit of sanding, then... Holes... Many holes (again)...
Remone the louves...
The PE part will be glued on that support
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad131.JPG)
...but still a lot of work to do, to adjust the PE
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/rodenspad132.JPG)
Anyway, if I'm not satisfied, I still have the original modified part!
-
Very complicated, in general, etched parts should make work easy, not harder.
-
Not the case of that element, mate... A really splendid one, but I must say I HATE it! ;-)
-
Hard work! :-clap
-
Yes, but always nice to try to find solutions...
-
I share you oppinion! :-flo
-
You are doing a great work...
I like PE parts but sometimes they really make the work living hell...
-
Thank you, Samuraj!
...And agreed, for the PE...
-
But your patience is enormous ;) :-obey
-
Thanks, Letippa.
I like such challenges as that Spad...
...But I like sweet, quiet builds too!!!
-
...But I like sweet, quiet builds too!!!
Did I hear Tamya?
-
...Wingnut Wings for WWI...
-
OK. I've tried. But nerviously, it was too much for me...
Feel better now... :-green
I will use the kit's part, without any regret: I've verified keeping the PE and the kit's part at eyes level, you see exactly the same.
Again working with photoetch:
there are six elements...
Primer on the propeller...
...and on another part I've préviously forgotten...
And finally, the dope linen for the interior of the fuselage. I've well examined the subject and compared Mister Kit, Vallejo, Gunze and Tamiya colors and finally I've opted for Tamiya XF-55 Deck Tan. I wish a dope linen that haves some use; don't forget that the Belgian Spads came from the French surplus - Not really aircfrats from the fabric!
More work next week... :))
-
Good progress! :-clap :-clap :-clap I like how you did the propeller head :-ok :-wave
-
Thank you!
-
XF-55 Deck Tan was not satisfying finally: at day light, gived an impression of a little bit of grey, and definitively too dark...
I've opted for another paint: French Beige from PolyScale. Looks better...
-
Completed with the rest of interior this would be great :)
-
OK. I've tried. But nerviously, it was too much for me...
Feel better now... :-green
I will use the kit's part, without any regret: I've verified keeping the PE and the kit's part at eyes level, you see exactly the same.
I've been in that situation before with photoetched material! Compound curves are hard to deal with, especially with the louvers on your cowling.
Scott
-
Yes Scott, it was too much for me... But the kit part is good enough, no problem for the kit...
-
I agree.... I'm using parts of a Verlinden PE kit on my B-17. The Verlinden bomb bay doors are quite nice but getting even the gentle curve in them that is required is pretty difficult. Your lower panel would have been ten-times as hard to shape!
Great project and thread!
Scott
-
Nice,nice...! :-love :-love :-clap :-clap
:-wave
-
Give that PE part a :-salut and continue con calma now... :-ok
The only time I actually hate PE parts is when I can't see what I'm doing because something is so tiny...
Or when I complicate my life just like as you tried to :-roll
-
Thank you!
PE parts are generally useful and can add realism to your model; but sometimes there are just bothering.
PART makes splendid PE; but I must say I NEVER have used the totality of the elements proposed...
-
Now that my professional studies are finished, I can build my models again...
Preparation phase (masking) before "wood" painting...
-
Welcome into real life mate :-ok
-
Thank you mate! :))
-
Preparation before wood painting still in progress...
With a little correction on Roden parts...
-
Once again,splendid work! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you mate!
Next: holes... Made with my "home-made" tool: a light support was needed; I used a toothpick...
-
Very useful tool! :-flo
-
I like your idea with this tool but to regret I think that I can not use this method in 1/72 scale :(
-
Sure you can, mate... No problem...
-
All right, at least I can give a try ;)
-
draken35, great tool, great work, man :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-wave
-
Thank you!
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap wow u are nuts!in positive way :-ok
-
Thank you, Tenk!
-
Today, white primer sprayed on the struts...
-
The most important thing is that you working on your projects!
Hardly wait to see progress. :-ok ;)
-
Today is your 'white primer' day :))
-
Today is your 'white primer' day :))
Yes indeed!
Not said previously but I have also made a white primer on the wings of the Albatros Eoffag 253 of a friend of mine who haves his airbrush out of use...
-
Next step: base for the wood. I've used Tamiya XF-60, then oil paints will be used.

Ha ha ha- last image reminds me on chocolate block ;)
-
Agreed - I must confess that I don't like the result I've obtained: too dark...
-
With all of the oil leaks smudged with mud and dust I don't expect any other shade
-
Haha,me too :))
Well,you will fix errors! ;-)
-
OK, at least I have good technique to paint chocolate... :-tri
-
Hahaha... :)) :))
-
The shade on the propeller seems just right :-ok, others I also find a bit too dark... :-think
-
The second side of some elements. I don't know actually if I will let all as is, or remove paint and give a new try...

-
Texture is great!
-
Yes, but too dark on my taste...
I think I will let as it is, because that Spad is made for a group build on a French forum and time is short now before the end of that GB...
-
So realistic wood effect. great job

Time to continue my Spad. Wood painted on the struts. Better result than for the interior parts, isn't it?
-
To be honest, I like interior look too :)

Yes, it's nice but too dark for my taste...
-
I think it is not about taste, better to see what type of wood were used and how it is stained?
-
Yes you're right... Wood used is dark, but with the scale effect it would be a little bit lighter on my kit...
-
Some parts were painted in alu
-
I will call this plastic salad ;)

I will call this plastic salad ;)
Good observation... It's exactly that: plastic salad! ;-)
Well, I try to recover my motivation for this kit...

Thank you! :)
Well, the pE engine cover is definitively destroyed. The plastic part too, but without causing any problem: two plastic engine covers were provided in the kit ans I was intelligent enough to use, for the PE setting, the engine cover not used on "my" Spad - So the plastic correct engine cover is safe and I've already worked on it.
Now that build is actually put aside, I'm waiting for the decals. Pheon Models said me that there was little demand for a Belgian decal sheet... And as that Spad was build for a WWI Group Build on a French forum, I preferred to put aside this one and so doing to have more time to work on a Fokker triplane (this time: Eduard 1/48 )
