Short Stirling Mk.IV

Just to prove I do actually make models, here's the Airfix Stirling - an old favourite to many and fondly remembered as a Christmas or birthday gift! This one was converted to a Mk.IV paratroop transport/glider tug of 299 Sqn, RAF Keevil, June 1944, using the Valiant Model Wings Mk.IV conversion (which is really just the nose piece).

I sanded back the rivets and rescribed the major panel lines. The other mods to create a Mk.IV were an under-floor hatch, parachute strop guard and glider tug attachment. The aircraft was unarmed. Otherwise, the kit was made OOB. D-Day stripes were applied imperfectly, just like the real thing.   ;)

Good job, Paul!!! A fine conversion.

I LOVE the Stirling in all its forms. Such a huge machine with so little wing area. I've often wondered how things would have turned out if the specifications had allowed Shorts to design a larger wing.

I like your work, Paul, and the beauty you made from good old Airfix - the only thing I wouldn't do is sanding off the rivets - that's Airfix trademark  :-roll

Profa, I did sand back the rivets, but I did not completely eliminate them. The idea was to have them show when you look at the model from certain angles if you catch the light just right - which is how rivetted aircraft look in real life. It works quite well, but it doesn't show up well in my photos - you have to look at the model in person.

Actually, if you look at the underside of the tailplane, you can just about make out the lines of rivets - just the effect I was looking for!  :-ok

Your rivet effect is very nice. :-ok :-cool The old Airfix Fw-189 project I've been working on needs more of this method applied to it....
