SBD/A-24 Group Build
« on: December 24, 2010, 02:09:34 AM »
No.1 originated a very interesting thread in the Combat Warplanes section pertaining to the Douglas A-24: http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/borbene-letelice-combat-warplanes/douglas-a-24-banshee/ He suggested a possibility that we do a group build. If any of you have an unbuilt SBD kit, of any scale or manufacturer, I'd like to invite you to join us in building them. Just reply to this thread any time if you'd like to participate.

I'll be doing an Accurate Miniatures SBD-2 as an A-24 that fought with the 3rd Attack Group in the SWPA.

This is great to do. I have no any kit but will try to find out any available, if possible in 1/72 scale. What do you think it is best time to start? January 2011?

Or should we wait a little longer to give more time? Perhaps start at the beginning of February? I suppose we could wait and see who wishes to join us and begin accordingly. (I admit I've cheated and started test-fitting parts on mine!) :-jump :-jump

Just to find a model, and whip current projects off the table... :-think Or, better, count me in conditionally - depending on job status... :-dal

Whatever works best for your situation is just fine, Profa. We can just get started in February and anyone can join in after. Personally, I don't care to set a deadline for finishing the build--just everyone at their own pace.

Here's a small walk around: http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/bill_spidle2/a-24b_42-54682/
There's also a good book on the same subject: Squadron/Signal Walk Around 5533 - SBD DAUNTLESS
For you, my friend Samurai, there's also SBD-5 of RN (only 9 delivered):

Just checking in to see if there is still interest in a group build starting in February.

Profa, that is a great shot of the Royal Navy machine. I noticed it has the sea-search Yagi antenna under the port wing.

That isn't a problem, we can certainly wait and do this sometime in the future.

It's February 1 so here is my first contribution to the SBD Build.

The first thing to happen was the engine. I decided to use one of my resin castings for the Y1B-17 project so I could see how it looks.

The second project was the tailwheel. The A-24 used a pneumatic tire rather than the solid type for carrier operations. It was really simple to cut off the solid wheel and fork, drill a hole in the fuselage halves, and insert a piece of tubing for the upper strut:

Then I found a suitable tire in the parts box and fashioned the lower strut from brass wire:
