No.1 originated a very interesting thread in the Combat Warplanes section pertaining to the Douglas A-24: http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/borbene-letelice-combat-warplanes/douglas-a-24-banshee/ He suggested a possibility that we do a group build. If any of you have an unbuilt SBD kit, of any scale or manufacturer, I'd like to invite you to join us in building them. Just reply to this thread any time if you'd like to participate.
I'll be doing an Accurate Miniatures SBD-2 as an A-24 that fought with the 3rd Attack Group in the SWPA.

This is great to do. I have no any kit but will try to find out any available, if possible in 1/72 scale. What do you think it is best time to start? January 2011?
-
Or should we wait a little longer to give more time? Perhaps start at the beginning of February? I suppose we could wait and see who wishes to join us and begin accordingly. (I admit I've cheated and started test-fitting parts on mine!) :-jump :-jump
-
February sound very good to me, hope that others will join :)
-
Just to find a model, and whip current projects off the table... :-think Or, better, count me in conditionally - depending on job status... :-dal
-
Whatever works best for your situation is just fine, Profa. We can just get started in February and anyone can join in after. Personally, I don't care to set a deadline for finishing the build--just everyone at their own pace.

Here's a small walk around: http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/bill_spidle2/a-24b_42-54682/
There's also a good book on the same subject: Squadron/Signal Walk Around 5533 - SBD DAUNTLESS
For you, my friend Samurai, there's also SBD-5 of RN (only 9 delivered):

-
Just checking in to see if there is still interest in a group build starting in February.
Profa, that is a great shot of the Royal Navy machine. I noticed it has the sea-search Yagi antenna under the port wing.
-
I hunt for the 1/72 scale kit, still nothing in Serbia :(
-
That isn't a problem, we can certainly wait and do this sometime in the future.
Scott
-
I hope that this will be of any help ;)

I will join in 1/48 scale!sbd-3 hasegawa :-green
-
This is from the 'Nico Braas Aircraft Model Kit Museum' (joke)!
I'll leave it in the box for a while!!
-
Maybe better to keep it as is, this is today rare kit.
-
It's February 1 so here is my first contribution to the SBD Build.
The first thing to happen was the engine. I decided to use one of my resin castings for the Y1B-17 project so I could see how it looks.
The second project was the tailwheel. The A-24 used a pneumatic tire rather than the solid type for carrier operations. It was really simple to cut off the solid wheel and fork, drill a hole in the fuselage halves, and insert a piece of tubing for the upper strut:
Then I found a suitable tire in the parts box and fashioned the lower strut from brass wire:

-
Congratulation mate!! I hope more of us will join to you soon!
-
Engine is simply great :-clap
Hope to find suitable kit and join soon... :-think
-
You are so precise and accurate. :-eek :-obey
Engine looks perfect!!!! :)) :-ok
-
Just a couple of photos. First the cowling and accessory section assembly. This part of the Accurate Miniatures kit is sort of tricky to assemble. The way the parts are designed makes for a nice finished product but requires some test-fitting first.
Major parts taped together to study the fit.

I took another "snow day" on Wednesday because the parking areas at work were impassable. First I cleaned the stoop and driveway, then fed the birds:
Then I got some further work done on the A-24. First was to detail paint and assemble the cockpit and gunner compartments and sidewalls.
I then joined the fuselage halves and installed the wings. Everything here fits really nicely. Very little filler is required at the various joints with the exception of the bottom of the fuselage at the center wing area. The horizontal stabilizers don't fit quite as well as they could, but a touch of filler on each of these fixes the problem easily.
As soon as it warms up I'll be doing a bit of priming.
Scott
-
This look great!
-
I started sbd-3...holes,holes,and more holes!
-
You're doing the most aggravating part first, Tenk! Good idea. I drilled out the entire set on a 1/72nd SBD a number of years ago and it seemed to take all day........and a couple of pots of coffee...... ;)
-
Nice work here...
-
Very nice lads :-clap
-
The temperature was a bit warmer today so I was able to prime the seams that required filler. After priming, touching up missed areas, and re-priming I sprayed the red interiors of the wing flaps and NMF of the center-section flap. The A-24 I'm modeling was a very early machine and went down the production line with standard SBDs. These first A-24s had the same red flap interiors and the black walkways on both wings that the Navy specified for their SBD-3s. Only the camouflage colors were to Army specifications. Even the propeller tips were the pre-war Navy red-yellow-blue stripe pattern.

This going so fast on your side mate ;)
-
Fast and great work mate! :-clap
-
horrido! :-jump some little progress...
-
Great progres! :-ok
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
Progress is fast and gooood :-ok
-
Let me join to your build with this... Testors 1/72 kit... :-evil well, this is stupid choice as well this look like so old kit and I regret for my old Airfix kit which is miss somewhere. So this kit have some old style kits options, like the kits from '50, national insignia engraved in plastic as well no landing gear bay open. I will take some think what to do...
-
I can't wait to see, what this look like when it be finished!
-
Welcome to the group! That is definitely a fifties-style kit. :-wise
Now that you've started this kit we can show the progress that has been made in the design and manufacture of model kits over the decades. When I started modeling in the 1960s a kit cost around one U.S. dollar, and many of them were like this model. Sometimes I complain about the cost of modern kits, but comparing this old Testors to a Tamiya or other top-line model makes one appreciate the progress that has been made.
Looking forward to your ideas!
Scott
P.S.
I shot the neutral grey on my A-24 this morning. Perhaps the olive drab will go on tomorrow.
-
To be honest... I spent some time today watching available documentation and realize that any attempt to upgrade this kit will spent me more time and material then to build two B-24 from Eduard. So, to my deep regret, I will build this kit 'as is'. This will in some level downgrade level of this group build as well shown material in this topic show great skill and effort but in future I will give much better start for my self.
What do you all think about?
-
I think it will be fine that you build this kit "out-of-the-box" as it can show how far the quality of model manufacturing has advanced over the years. The younger modelers in the world sometimes don't realize that kits were very basic in the "good old days" of modeling.
-
Personally,i would like to see some hand-made detailes for this kit.It would be great school for me,to see how one master made some tiny parts, but if you haven't time,it doesn't important! ;)
-
The A-24 after camouflaging:
Next will be the detail painting, including the canopy sections.
-
I start work today, some steps are here, simply there is nothing special to be explained...
-
This goes fast! Nice mate! :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Extreme simple kit...
-
Interior green spray in and I think this will be end of the story for this section...
:-roll
-
:-ok
-
You'll be done long before I will, No.1! :) I'm out of gloss and flat clear right now so no decaling for me. I have been painting the small parts. This airplane had the U.S. Navy red/yellow/blue propeller tips and tri-colored wheelcovers so I got that tedious part of the painting done last weekend.
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Gunze Sangyo is excellent so try it if you did not until now ;)
-
Protection of canopy :-roll and spray work :-razz
-
I finally found some clear flat, but I couldn't find any Gunze Sangyo in Tulsa. :-roll I ended up using Testors gloss and flat and it seems to work quite well. I was concerned a little that the clear is a lacquer that I was spraying over enamel but it worked just fine.

I'm still doing a little research with the son of an 8th Squadron gunner to see how heavily weathered the airplane should be. I have a photo of the airplane after less than a month of combat use and it still looks pretty clean.
-
Nice progress!
I've found some nice photos, first of which is color:

http://www.vectorsite.net/avsbd_1.jpg
I believe you'll find photos of better resolution and relevance :-roll
-
Nice progress guys! :-clap
-
You see here final steps of this build. No doubt that this is worst build of all kits seen here in any aspect of this word meaning. To be honest this kit look like to be made as fast as possible and without any intention for upgrade (it is possible but...). Last image show the machine which is subject of my build and decals are provided for the sample machine number 5, third from bottom. Note that they have radar aerial beneath the wing and the unit was designated for the anti submarine role. And no, I have no plan to make it :-bat maybe one day with some better kit.
-
That aerial shouldn't in any way be a problem to skratchbuild... :-think
-
I know but I am think about the sense of that as well kit is overall pure content.
-
This is completed in early style of modeling- no weathering and no details highlighted ;)
-
Looks really good. It's not bad,as you said. :-flo :-clap :-clap
-
I like the overall look of the model even though you started with a most basic kit. I got my start in this hobby by building Renwal, Pyro, and other basic models forty some years ago. It brings back some good memories to see you build a "starter" kit!
Scott
-
Looks nice once finished
-
Thank you friends :))
-
a great kit ,from nothing!nice job! :)
-
Thank you :))
-
Looks quite nice :-ok
Once it is on the shelf, only you will notice missing details ;)
-
Thank you mate :) Now one question- are we going to wait to two of the great build shown in this topic to be completed and then to start another Group Build or not?
-
We can start the next one on top of this one as far as I'm concerned. I confess I could have gotten the A-24 done by the end of the month if I hadn't wasted time on finding the clearcoat....... :-roll
-
The A-24 is finally up on the landing gear and final assembly is almost complete. I hope to have this done this weekend so I can get a start on the Shturmovik.

-
Looks very, very nice... :-clap :-clap :-clap Great job mate! :-flo
-
The A-24 is essentially done and it's time to start on the next Group project, the Il-2. I'm still uncertain about the weathering on this airplane so I've decided to wait until I have good information from my 8th Attack Squadron contact.
I wasn't too happy when the silvering showed up on the wing roundel. I used the kit decal (trimmed most of the film from the edges) and it looked O.K. until I applied the flat clear. Perhaps, if we decide that the airplane needs a lot of weathering, I will be able to repair it.
Scott
-
Perfect work as always mate! :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
Outstanding result, however I hope that your contact will tell that you should add some weathering on this model.
I am certain it would be even more attractive and eye catching :-flo
-
Even in this state kit look excellent :-ok Al right- when you are ready please open Il-2 subject :))
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap

I'm pretty certain that I'll be doing something more to the finish, samuraj. This airplane was "inherited" by the 8th Squadron after having flown in combat with the 27th Bomb Group (L). The model depicts the airplane at Charter Towers airstrip in March/April of '42, and it had been in the SWPA for around three months.
I'm working on the Ilyushin, No.1! :-jump :-jump :-salut
-
slow but...
-
Slow but deadly (that was one book title about the Dauntless ;) )
-
Looking great! :-ok
-
Great work with that PE parts
-
Good work tenk! :-flo :-clap :-clap
-
Good work, buddies!
Regarding silvering - you might try dabbing on a little nitro-solvent using damp paintbrush. Leave it overnight, and it should be OK... I did the same thing on my Famo (http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/ground-forces/revell-172-sd-kfz-9-famo/), and it looks quite nice now... Seems nitro works as a decal softener, even over flat coat :-think
-
I'll give that a try, Profa. Since the flat overcoat is somewhat porous I am pretty sure your idea will work.
-
I am in the process of rearranging my display case and decided to place my two SBD models together for a picture. The 1/72 one is from Hasegawa.

Two great kits :-clap Hope that one day I will make something like Hasegawa ;)

There is a little point from my side about the topside colors used on early war camouflage on US naval aircraft. In most known cases, Blue Grey color were present too light and sometimes too grey and actual color is far from this shade, tone and intensity. Here you are sample access plate from Grumman F4F Wildcat, Bureau Number 11985, side number white F-21, from VF-11, pilot Leonard has flown on this machine 12 June 1943 when he shot down two A6M2s, bringing his total to six. Machine was after dumped and after six month of expose it plate was removed and taken as souvenir. As you see, even after that long expose this color is still much dark. Hope this helps...
-
tnx for the tip,but the paint used in this project was mm authentic series II,and a think , from my researches and paint chips i have used ,that the color wasn't so dark?! maybe i am wrong :-/ tnx man! :-flo
Paint Information:
Name # Navy Blue Gray
Product # 2055
HTML # 728488
CMYK # 59, 39, 40, 6
RGB # 114, 132, 136

To regret, access panel above was not painted with MM authentic paints :(
