Title: Republic P-47D-30 Thunderbolt in French markings.
Post by: Jicehem on October 01, 2015, 04:43:12 PM
Hello :-salut

Another kit among my oldest ones.
A true vintage kit and single in its kind, a "Airvell" model or, more precisely a mixture of two models…
Revell, in 1963, issued a 1/72 scale P-47D-25 Thunderbolt  the nose of which was not very good. I had assembled a specimen of this model that, of course was barely accurate for me. In 1966, Airfix issued a P-47D-22, a Razorback, with the Hamilton propeller which will be found on the coming D-25 version.  I thus tried to graft the nose from Airfix, including the wings, on the fuselage of Revell and the transplantation took well.
Here the result, in 1967, with the markings of Revell's kit:

A few months later, Max Abt published a decal sheet for a French P-47D-30 of the GC II/5 La Fayette (in two words in France and one word "Lafayette" in the USA). I carried out one second graft, but without taking account of the differences with the "D-30" version… In 1968, I was greatly unaware of subtleties between the different versions of the P-47…
