Here we are for what is espected to be a fast building.
the goal is to give a try to AK Xtreme Metal colors.
The kit Airfix is very nice. I will build it quasi from the box, with some minor exceptions like seatbelts added (masking tape from Tamiya) and seat slightly modified with lateral reinforcements.
-
Work is going fast actually...
-
You are excellent for small details
-
Thank you my friend! :)

Today, first trial with AK Interactive "Xtreme Metal"...
Wow...
I've first airbrushed the black base. It's enamel, but the paint dry in only a few seconds. After that I've airbrushed Polished Aluminium: paint is fluid, used as it is; a pleasure to airbrush and like the black base, it's dry quasi immediately! And the result is amazing: real metal!!!
Then I've used Duraluminium for the zone surrouding the exhausts emplacement. Opening the color, I constated that this one was granulous. In such a case, it's an imperative need to diulte the paint with some thinner, to obtain a perfect fuidity. If fluidity is not there, you will obstruct your airbrush with paint. If fluid, what a real pleasure!!!
To be noted too that I've masked the surrounding zone before to paint Duraluminium. When removing the masks, NO TRACE of pigments on it!!!
Well: first try, that means new technique and experience must be acquired, but I'm really enthusiast!

:-eek :-eek :-eek :-obey Congratulation for this short guide and excellent result on your kit :-tri
-
Thank you my friend! ;)
-
This has a great look to it!!
-
Thank you Scott!
Well, today it's rainy time here so I've worked on the Mustang...
First of all, for the decoration I want to realise, the Hamilton standard propeller is not correct. I have "kitnashed" a little bit and taken an Aero-Products propeller from a box of Tamiya F-51D... Some adaptation is needed but somewhat easy to do.
To note that the yellow border is painted on the face only.
-
A little bit of red on the airplane...
-
...And after having airbrushed Pébéo Gloss varnish, I placed all the decals.
Yes, a Swiss Mustang!
...But a very particular one!
This one is in fact a Mustang owned by a German enthusiast that was specially painted to celebrate the 100 years of Swiss Air Force. What is funny is the German immatriculation and the little, discrete German flag well present on the fuselage...
-
Fast!!!
-
Yes, it's unusual... ;)
-
OK, here we are...
Early this morning, I've washed the plane with water to remove traces of glue of the decals, then I've airbrushed Pébéo Gloss varnish again.
This afternoon, removing of the masks then oil wash (with Black from Abteilung 502) and all the little parts are glued in place.
Kit finished... Great look with AK! I'm happy but to be honnest it's the really first test and some experience is needed to obtain perfection - But perfection is possible ;)
-
Excellent!!!
-
Thank you! :)
-
I like it a lot
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Well, As I have lot of Mustang kits to build and as I wish to gain experience with AK Xtreme metal paints, time to begin another one!
This time it's a 1/72 P-51D Mustang from Tamiya. And I will build a Cuban Mustang.
Parts are removed from sprue and ready for painting. The canopy frame received a drop of cyano to correct a little gap; sanding is needed of course.
I have also ameliorated the seat a little bit with Evergreen and masking tape...
-
Cuban? Idea is good, lets see it :)
-
Cuban? Idea is good, lets see it :)
I have a decal sheet from Aztec Models: Mustangs from Cuba, Nicaragua, Salvador and Costa Rica... I will also build at least a Nicaraguayan Mustang ;)
-
Go on mate ;)
-
Today insert and preparation of the AIRES cockpit detail set:
1. The sides of the interior of the cockpit are sanded
2-3. Resin elements are glued with cyano. Those elements are fitting extremely well.
4-5. The seat: seatbelt is glued and also the lateral reinforcements. Parts are too fine and easily deformable; to place carefully...
6. The instrument panel: I don't have used the photoetched pedals of the detail set; because there were too big and woyld have been lower than the floor! Instead I've cut those of the plastic part of the kit.
7-8. The "main body" of the interior, let say the floor and the rear of the cockpit. The resin part is fine and a little bit more detailed than the kit one, but you need to cut the rear of the kit part and, later, to glue it in the kit...
-
This resin will be great once when you finish it :)
-
Hope so ;)
-
Hello !
Beautiful rendering. Bravo !
Jicehem :-wave
-
Thank you! :)
-
White primer done for cockpit elements
-
:-ok
-
;)
-
Canopy masked
-
Mask day :))
-
Mask day :))
Exactly :))
-
Time to resume the work...
Interior green airbrushed.
I've also airbrushed the spin in yellow and the exhausts in rust...
-
Lets it dry and... ;)
-
Sure...
-
:-ok
-
;)
-
Very very little work today on the Mustang...
I wish to try a technique used by a good friend for wood effect. So, after white primer I've airbrushed a pale yellow.
Next step soon...
-
Hhhhmmmm... lets see...
-
Hhhhmmmm... lets see...
...Oil paint will be used ;)
-
Next step: Oil paint.
Madere Alizarin brown, generously applied then slowly and smoothly removed with no less than three paintbrushes...
-
I never ask- what is color of this area?
-
I never ask- what is color of this area?
The floor is wood made. The rest will be black painted...
-
Letting the oil paint to dry, I have worked on the interior of the fuselage, instrument panel, stick and seat. I have also tried some chipping effect, using a color lighter than the base one. The seat sounds particularily good to me...
Of course work is not finished...
-
I get the point and the rest of the work is great!!
-
Thank you my friend!
-
This is very, very nice!
-
Thank you!
But, as it seems, I have to correct the back of the seat that must be yellow (a kind of dinghy in fact...)
-
As said yesterday, the back of the seat must be painted in yellow... Correction done.
-
:-ok
-
Good one!
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Another "Mustang" that will be, I'm sure, very beautiful.
Jicehem :-wave
-
Thank you my friend!
-
Little progress
-
Details are exhausted
-
very nice
-
Thank you Modellius!
Some weathering effects on the spinner (with an HB2 pencil) and the propeller blades (with an aequous dark grey pencil); then Pébéo gloss varnish is airbrushed.
-
Coming along nicely!
-
Thank you Scott!
-
Oil wash applied (Abteilung 502 Wash Brown)
-
End of the trip for this Mustang...
I have airbrushed Pébéo matt varnish then used pastels. Result was excellent.
Problem comes with the fitting of the AIRES cockpit detail set in the cockpit. I had tested previously and that was fine, but it was without the instrument panel in place... This one blocks the half fuselage. I had to use extremely strong cyano to glue the parts, even with that the fuselage was deformed and big problem to place the wings but also the windshield: for this one I had to try to enlarge it a little bit and that resultat in the definitive loss of transparency! More than the the instrument panel, even if in place, was not well centered and the visor was not correctly positioned!
After lot of trials, lot of cyano that masked some details, my hand smashed the kit!
No regret. One thing to note is that it's the second time I use an AIRES cockpit detail set and it's the second time I have problems with it.
For my Me 163S, I had to sand the floor to permi a good fit, but until the moment sanding was so heavy that the floo became translucid! here, bad fitting again...
I'm afarid I have on my stash other aircrafts with AIRES sets... Don't know if I will try to use it again!!!
Anyway, as I have some P-51D in reserve on my stash, I will not have any problem to finally build a Cuban Mustang. I will just wait a few time before to do that...
Oh, and anyway I've recuperated the spinner with propeller and the exhausts...
-
Hello,
Sad end... :-think :(
Jicehem :-wave
-
Yes...
Bad day...
-
Pencils are great for this!
-
Well, more parts for the scratchbuilding bin!
We've enjoyed the thread and your efforts regardless of the final ending, mate. :-clap
-
Thank you.
i will restart a Cuban Mustang soon ;)
-
I'm baaaack! :))
This time I will use the kit parts only, with eventually ameliorations made by myself. So for the seatbelts I've used masking tape with just the buckles of a photoetched seatbelt...
-
I like when see salad of parts in your build projects ;)
-
I'm famous in the hobby for my salad and for the use of caps...

Hello :-salut
It's almost the same for me but without bottle caps, only chocolate box caps !
Jicehem :-wave

;)
-
Yellow as base for the wooden floor...
-
fantastic job here mate !
-
Thank you!
-
I wish to try something, for the wood floor. I will not work the same way that with the "destroyed" Mustang.
So, over the yellow paint I've paintbrushed Vallejo "Wood", in three fine layers, drying each layer with... Airbrush!
I let quiet until the week-end, then I will use Burnt Umber oil paint...
-
I have generously applied oil paint (Winsor & Newton "Burnt Umber") then, after 1/4 hour, I've removed the paint with, first a Q-tip and then a paintbrush.
I like the result...
-
:-ok
-
excellent !
-
Thank you! ;)
-
A very little progress: klir paintbrushed on the wood floor...
-
looks nice
-
Thank you!
-
Today as I was using some yellow for the Spitfires, I managed to airbrush the propeller and spin, plus the elements behind the pilot in the cockpit
-
Good and easy way :)
-
:-ok
-
Thank you!
-
Final presentation for the Swiss Mustang
-
:-ok
-
Well, I think I have found a good presentation for all my kits...
-
It is :)
-
looks very nice !
-
Very nice! I love all things with Swiss markings!!
-
thank you! :)
