Thanks, friends!

So little time right now for modeling....... :-/ I'm planting vegetables and working on the car so not much time spent on this MiG. Here is a small update on it, though--I've done some small Metalizer testing on the aft fuselage. I decided to paint the vertical and horizontal surfaces separate from the fuselage and then assemble the pre-painted sections:

I am really testing on this section........trying to see if the surface can be prepared for Metalizer without a coat of primer first. The kit is molded fairly smoothly so a light sanding with 4000 grit MicroMesh sandpaper seems to give the base needed. I've since sprayed the vertical fin and horizontal stabilizers with a coat and started to buff various panels. More work needed to get the varied finish of the real airplane, but the idea is going as I'd hoped.

Every time I build a NMF model I try something new or at least try to improve on old methods. It's really not so much fun to do natural metal for me...... :-help

As I mentioned in the last post, testing is underway. Here you can see the aft fuselage temporarily assembled to study the variety of aluminum shades needed:

The test has had some problems along the way, but it's working better now. One good thing about Metalizer is that you can usually spray a new coat over mistakes and repair bad areas easily. The pigment is so thin that it doesn't build up into thick paint like enamel or acryl.

I'll use the horizontal stabilizers as an example of how to get the different shades of aluminum: First the surfaces were made completely smooth with 4000 grit sandpaper. Then I washed the parts throughly and dried them. No primer was applied (this is, in part, due to the excellent molding of the kit parts--no filler was needed at the join seams!) and a coat of Aluminum Metalizer was sprayed. This goes on with a slightly rough finish. Next step was to put on cloth gloves (skin oils leave huge fingerprints on Metalizer) and very carefully polish the shiny areas with a soft cloth. This was where I made mistakes the first time. I simply reapplied Metalizer and started over. After the varigated colors were achieved the entire surface received a coat of Metalizer Sealer. With the sealer sprayed on the parts can be handled during assembly without removing the Metalizer or adding fingerprints. On the wings I will be using two shades of Metalizer, Stainless Steel and Aluminum. This will be in the next step......

Last night was a good time to work on the landing gear units. These build-up quite easily but you must be careful to get the right angle on the doors, both the bending of the lower portion and the angle that they sit on the strut:

Then it was on to the wing painting. First the stainless steel was mixed with some aluminum to get the right shade and this was sprayed onto the appropriate areas. Next I polished this and applied some Metalizer Sealer to the areas painted:

Next step was to get out my panel masks that had been carefully cut out earlier. As it turned out I also used thin strips of Tamiya masking tape (with the adhesive effect lessened so as not to mar the paint) around the edges of the two panels on top and bottom of each wing. Then it was easy to spray aluminum and polish this color. After the right aluminum finish was attained the masking material was removed and a final coat of Sealer applied all-over the surfaces:

Next up, the fuselage!

This is important to know that tape does not effect to surface ;)

I've found that Tamiya tape works well providing you do three things: 1. Spray a coat of Metalizer Sealer over the parts you will mask, 2. Relieve some of the sticky from the tape before applying it to the surface, and 3. be very careful when removing the tape when you're done painting.

Yes, me too! I used to try to mask Metalizer without the sealer coat but that is not possible, also the harsher tapes stick too hard and will even lift up the sealer! Tamiya tape works very well now that I use it.
