MiG 21F-13 by Trumpeter
« on: March 12, 2014, 06:40:23 PM »
My desk is clear of projects right now and I can start this project. This is a kit that has been on my "to-do" list for some time, the Trumpeter F-13 in 1/48. I have always liked the thin lines of the early MiG 21! Just a few photos of the trees and other items:

So today I have started on this project. The cockpit parts and canopy inside frames got their coat of light blue. The "YF-110" that was tested by the USAF had this early color rather than the common Soviet interior green. I mixed a bit of grey with some RLM76 to get the shade I was looking for.

Yes, I think it will be nice--maybe not quite as detailed as the Eduard series, but good just the same.

I'm planning this as an out-of-box build, so only the small amount of photoetch that comes with the kit will be used. Next up is to start the wheelwells. ;)

Further work on this project, first to build up the nose gear well and then the main fuselage wheelwells. Afterwards a coat of Anodic Grey Metalizer topped off with a thinned wash of RLM02 to give these areas the proper tinted effect:

Next was to continue with the assembly of the cockpit and ejection seat. Again, I used only the parts in the kit, including the PE seatbelts. I am of the opinion that these should be somewhat wider.

While the cockpit parts were drying I prepared the fuselage halves by installing the engine, wheelwells and intake spike assembly that had been pre-painted. Once everything was ready the fuselage halves were glued together and some test-fitting of the vertical fin and canopy parts occurred. While that was drying I opened the appropriate holes in the wing panels for pylons etc. and glued them together. This is a really nice-fitting kit and it doesn't appear that I'll need much putty on joints!

I also like this and the details are sharply defined.

In some areas they could have designed the molds better. Notice the large locating sockets on the two main landing gear doors. These will show when the gear is assembled and should really be corrected for a show quality model. There are only a couple of places where this was done on the kit, not hard to fix. The surface detail on the balance is really nice and the engraved lines and fasteners are nicely done.

Yep, I think so too! Some other manufacturers could learn from how Trumpeter packages their kits. The clear fret of parts is carefully wrapped in foam and then in a plastic bag. The box is very compact but the parts are well protected.
