Title: Messerspit!
Post by: Ernie on March 09, 2013, 03:35:32 PM
Well, after a break to get a new job etc. I finally have some time to model, and here is my current project!
The Messerspit was a captured Spitfire Mk.V that the Germans re-engined and re-cowled with the cowling from a Bf-110. The conversion consists of the Tamyia Spit Mk.V and the Fusion conversion for the new nose. Even though the conversion is suppose to come with declas, none were included when I got it, but fortunately Mike Grant was able to help me out with a set of the correct code letters so I could finish the model accurately.

The starting point.

The new nose fitted to the fuselage. The fit was near perfect, this is probably one of the best fitting conversion sets I have ever used.

The fuselage interior painted and weathered.

The rest of the interior, the only addition was a set of Eduard belts.

And lastly with the yellow masked off and the main camo applied. All the camo was done with Polly Scale paint, RLM 04, 74, and 75.
The decals are in progress at this point and I hope to have them done and pictures later today.

And this is the real one!
The Germans made this conversion for direct comparison of different airframes with same engine.
I believe the German test pilots praised it for its good handling quality (which is not very surprising...)

Thank you Greg, it is a cool project and something different, auctuall it is the first Spitfire I have built and the Tamyia kit and Fusion are both excellent to work with.

In between working on the decals I built the prop. The conversion supplies a new spinner and prop blades along with a neat little resin jig to set the correct pitch to the blades. There is a template included in the instructions that I fastened to a thick piece of sheet plastic with double stick tape, then did one blade at a time using a small drop of J&B Weld (a super strong epoxy) on the end of each blade, letting it set, and then doing the next one.

Getting closer, almost time to pick the next project! :)) :-ok

Turned out okay, I am happy with it and it looks good sitting on the shelf. Now on to the next project, not quite sure what it will be yet, but it is probably going to involve alot of work. I will try to decide what it is going to be and start it sometime this week.
