Time has come to start our May GB. I've been looking forward to this one for some time as the Bf-110 is one of the most beautiful twin engine warplanes built (in my opinion).
I'll be working on at least two Zerstorers in this build, a 1967-issue Monogram 1/72 scale machine and another old one, the 1/48 Fujimi C/D. When we get home later this week I'll get some work done and photos posted.
All are invited to build! :-wave
-
Here is my first update on the Bf-110.
The very old Monogram 1/72 kit has nice exterior detailing and looks pretty accurate overall. There is basically no interior, however, not uncommon among the kits if the sixties. I added a floor and some boxes to add a bit of texture in there, but this will be built with canopy closed so I didn't go all-out. I did use the kit decals for the instrument panels as they add some color to the cockpits. Here's a shot of the assembled basic parts after painting the interior pieces:
I also started a small bit of work on the 1/48 Fujimi C/D. This is an old kit also and benefits from some extra work. Here are both engine cowls with the blank oil cooler outlet shown on the left and the beginnings of adding the open outlet on the right. I simply drilled a series of holes and then started carving and filing. When done these will have a nice open shape as they should.

:-ok
-
I will start tomorrow my sample of this old kit but will be powered by Eduard set :))
-
Here you are work in the moment on this kit. Kit I have is from 1967 and still unbeaten in regard to its overall shape accuracy :-clap Only problem is that this kit is poor with details so I will use Eduard set for upgrade. Note that Eduard develop set for Airfix kit but as well Airfix kit is total failure I decide not to waste my time and focus on adopting this set to be used in Monogram old kit.
-
Very nice work on detailes. :-ok
-
There is much to do and here is few steps :)) I wish I could complete interior today and close fuselage halfs.
-
You are on good way. ;) Look very nice. :-ok
-
Excellent work guys :-ok I am amazed to see how well the Eduard set fits the old Monogram kit, it does make a huge difference in the appearance of the kit already!
Ernie
-
I'll say it makes a huge difference! The original parts consist of little more than the pilot's seat and an instrument panel.
-
True, very limited details :)
-
Here is the rudimentary cockpits of my kit. I only added a couple of sidewall longerons of styrene strip and a floor, with a few trinkets sprinkled around for accent. Notice also that No.1s Eduard set has the cannon receivers that go on the floor in the radio room. My model depicts a non-cannon equipped bomber so the floor in this area would be smooth. As stated earlier, the canopy will remain closed so I wasn't terribly concerned with the depth of detail, just enough to be convincing. The gunner's seat is from my first-ever model airplane, an early sixties B-24 that my older cousin let me build, kindling my passion for modeling.
Incidentally, this one is now ready for paint. If anyone is wanting to add a Bf-110 to their collection this is a fine, simple kit and old enough to be a very vintage model. :-ok
-
Great mate, hope you will use some interesting scheme :)
-
One more little update, Albion Alloys metal tube as holder for seat
-
Good,both of you. ;)
-
My progress today :))
-
:-ok :-clap
-
Great progress, No.1, and the Eduard set is a great improvement for the interior of the Monogram kit!
Progress on my 1/48 Fujimi D. Since this kit was first available where I lived I always wanted one but for some reason never purchased one. Well, a few months ago I started looking on the auction site and found a listing for two complete kits and some extra parts all in one package deal. I ended up as high bidder and got not only the kits and three drop-tank trees, but also a True Details resin cockpit and some other goodies. I'm going to build the plainer one first and then tackle the detailed kit later. Here's an overview of the parts that make up a single kit:
This Fujimi kit has one major error in shape, that being the aft fuselage is too narrow in vertical profile. To fix this is not difficult. I simply manufactured a shim of styrene stock that tapers from just aft of the gunners opening to the extreme tail. Once this is determined the horizontal stabilizer/elevator opening is filed to a wider opening so that it will sit properly in the fuselage groove.
Next I used styrene sheet and shapes along with some stretched sprue and copper wire to detail the cockpits a bit. Some junction boxes and a few bits from the spares bin and the fuselage halves were joined. As with the Monogram kit I started earlier, not fully detailed but enough to make it look interesting through the canopy.
Once the fuselage halves were joined another small modification was added. The D and other long-range variants of the Bf-110 had an extended tailcone with a liferaft inside. To deploy the raft the gunner/radio operator would pull a release lanyard in the aft cockpit. The cable that controls this device ran down the side of the fuselage on the left side. I made this from copper wire and simply glued it to the airplane, extending it to its terminus at the tailcone.
This leads directly to the tailcone/liferaft fairing. Fujimi kindly provided both the short and "duckbill" tail pieces in the kit. I didn't especially agree with the shape of the liferaft fairing so I scratchbuilt one of my own from styrene and resin. Again, these tailcones must be widened to correspond with the wider fuselage cross-section and to nest into the elevator cutout. The first photo is of the short tailpiece and then both versions side-by-side for comparison. The following photos show the two installed in the fuselage.
On to the wing assembly. The wheelwells are quite bare and need some work. First the cutout must be made in the gear well where the tire rested when retracted. Then I added some structural elements with Evergreen strip and shapes. Also, though not visible here, the radiator openings in the wing have to be boxed in or the wing interior is visible. Not difficult at all to accomplish with sheet plastic. Then just a simple matter to glue the wing halves together and add the engine nacelles. One small item that may be particular to my old kit only--the wings were a bit warped and took some finessing to get the proper dihedral of each assembly. Not bad considering the 35 years they spent in the box.
Next I assembled the main components into an airplane. This kit requires very little filler other than the surgery on the aft fuselage. The fit is really very nice.

-
I see you fight back this shape problems :-ok
-
Great,great job!!
-
Some interior images...
-
Excellent work, both of you!!! :-ok
-
Thank you mate :-ok
-
Yes, thanks for the support!
Sigh.........I'm going to have to mask the canopy sections today. There is a LOT of glass in a Bf-110 enclosure! :-wall
-
Canopy frames all masked, then some green paint.
-
In few days I will be in that stage, I hope so ;)
-
More progress :))
-
WOW! More good and fast work! :-obey :-ok
Ernie
-
That cockpit is awesome! A question--have you gotten a vacuform canopy for this project?
-
Nice cockpit. ;)
-
:-ok
-
Interior complete, now to complete kit externally and to prepare it for painting.
-
:-ok
-
Great!
-
:-ok
-
I'm not totally ignoring this project but time is a bit limited right now.
-
I have haze inside the cockpit due to super glue evaporating so I drop work for few days
-
I've had that problem before, too....... :-wall
-
This is nice progress Scott. ;) :-ok
-
Update :))

I loaded the airbrush with Sandgelb to do a bit of painting on the Tiger so the Monogram 110 received its base top color:

-
Good job mate! ;)
-
What a nice workshop mate :)
-
I have to restrict the view to just that little area......I would hate to show the balance of the table to the world! :-roll
-
After getting the gardening and lawn mowing done I finally found time to finish the camouflage on both my 110 projects. I reckon this could be titled "Vater und Sohn"?
-
Nice progress, Scott!
-
Great work! ;)
-
Big and little :))
-
Here is a "sneak peek" of the 1/72 version from my end. There's still a bit of work to do yet but it is near the finish line.
An amazing thing that speaks to the quality of these very old kits--I used the 1967 kit decals on this and they worked perfectly. All I had to do was spray a coat of clear gloss over them before use. They worked like they were printed a year ago!
-
Beautiful work mate :-ok

Here are a few pictures of my old Monogram kit. The contrast between this box-stock kit and the enhanced version being completed by No.1 will be a good example of what can be done with this very old kit. Mine has no enhancements at all with the exception of adding the antenna wire and a few little details in the cockpit. Even with my lack of effort on this it makes into a nice representation of the 110. Again, I have to stress that these are the original 1967 decals with only a little clear sprayed on them before use.

-
I like it. You have done excellent job!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you, Sall. This kit fits well and is a very easy build. For anyone looking to add a 1/72 early 110 to their collection I really recommend it. They're quite easy to find here in the States still, and not expensive at all. One item I don't care for is that the bomb racks are molded into the lower wing. To build a proper C or D you will have some surgery to do removing the racks. That isn't a big problem, though, and the rest of it makes up for that one little issue.
-
You definitely enjoy in every your build. :)) Me too! :-tri
-
Yep, it is a relaxing (most of the time) thing!
While I'm here, I just finished the last touches on the Fujimi 1/48 kit today. Here are a few photos of the finished Bf-110D-0 in the early-war markings of ZG 76.

I've always been very interested in the Dackelbauch fuel tank version and Fujimi included one in the kit. When I was a younger fellow I used to see these kits in the stores but never purchased one. It has some things to correct and a pretty bare interior, but was a fun build just like the old Monogram kit. Again, as with the other kit, I was able to use the kit decals on this model. Aftermarket decals would probably have been a better choice, but these turned out for this project. I've another of these kits that I intend to detail much more, but that project will be in the future.

One more beautiful work from your shop! :)) :-clap :-clap
-
Beautiful!!!
-
Here are both of Messerschmitt's fighters side-by-side in the early war camouflage. Beautiful designs, in my opinion.

:-ok
-
Good heavens, those are beautiful! I can't get over the "seams" on the tires, just like they were popped out of the Continental molds!!!!!!
-
Thank you friends for your kind comments :))

-
Thanks to ultra thin tape work on canopy protection goes somehow...
-
:-ok
-
That canopy causes headaches when masking, doesn't it!? :-wall
-
Oooooo yes :(
-
Hard job,but you will win!! :)) :-ok
-
I hope so :(
-
Protection completed!!!

All painted until now and tomorrow is Pebeo day :))
-
Good paint job! :-clap :-ok
-
Thank you, tomorrow is decal day and will use those I received for review. At first glance Eduard decals look great!!
-
I have a favor to ask--does anyone have any drawings of the Bf-110B? Especially the engine nacelles would be useful, even front-on photos would be of help. I'd like to build a Jumo-powered 110 one of these days.
Thanks in advance. :-flo
Scott
-
Will find, I think I have them...
-
Great!
I've got some elements of cowling here that might be adaptable to the Jumo 110.
-
Great mate and I have completed decal work, later today this kit will get flat varnish coat :)
-
:-ok

Thank you friends :)) I hope I can continue work tomorrow and show what great feature it present with all etched parts placed on :-ok
-
And here you are some of my work this morning :))
-
Very,very nice!! :-clap :-clap
-
I am a bit lazy but something I have done on cockpit :) There is just few etched parts to be place on side wall and then I can merge cockpit assembly with fuselage half's :))
-
A busy place!
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Thank you friends :)
-
Back to project this morning...

Having fun, good!! :-ok
-
Thank you mate :)

I picked up an "In Action" book of the Bf-110 and it has several photos and drawings of my next project, the Jumo powered Bf-110B. Here's one of the photos:
-
This will be so rare and interesting ;)
-
Last progress :))
-
Look good. ;) :-clap
-
I force m self to continue work....
-
I like! :-clap
-
There's certainly a lot more detail in this landing gear than the old Monogram kit!!!!!!
-
Thank you friends :) True, much details and two parts is still not installed, I will do that tomorrow. For tomorrow I will put all protection over transparent parts, put few small parts on kit and... I guess put a layer of primer and go with painting.
-
Cockpit work, little external detailing and it is ready for painting. Not sure about today, I am a bit lazy but maybe tomorrow.
-
You're past the hardest part, masking the canopy parts! :-cool
-
Good job mate!! :-clap :-ok
-
Thank you friends :) True, after cockpit, life look easy :)) Here you are current state of kit. Parts are sprayed with general purpose acrylic paint. I took this one as well it hold strong on surface and give very good shine. My choice is sample machine from night fighter unit which was all black but later in service get coat of green color (last image in row). Image show that airplane get all over coat but area of marking was skip so there is still visible back color. My plan is to use one interesting method to achieve this look.
-
Beauty!! :-clap
-
I like this choice of markings/camouflage!
-
Thank you friends :) Decals are place and tomorrow I will paint green at the top
-
Some sort of green grey at the top
-
Kit is under final works. Main body get coat of flat varnish, Pebeo (what else) and as you can see I have wash out before area with markings. Now I need to spray yellow band on rear fuselage. Other image show mask work. Wheels are masked and center painted in black. But cockpit windows show different method, I remove mask elements from external surfaces and put it on internal surfaces. Then I spray it all in RLM 02 color. This should be almost near complete today.
-
:-clap :-clap
Very nice work mate. ;) :-clap
-
Thank you mate :)) This is very close to complete... radio wire, exhaust and panel highlight remain to be made :-danger
-
Just wire and this is complete
-
Very nice finish, No.1!
-
Great job my friend, as always!! :-clap :-clap

Excellent kit, I can see! Eduard is pushing forward on so many fronts!
-
Thank you friends :)) Scott- I hope you will join soon with 1/48 scale kit from the same manufacturer ;)
-
Well... maybe I get older or too tired but first step in build was to mark frets for fast find them. Most of basic interior parts are cemented and then sprayed in black grey color. It is drying now but will not continue work until tomorrow (I guess).
:-razz
-
Good idea....
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Thank you, I hope more update coming tomorrow ;)
