May Group Build--Bf-110
« on: May 01, 2012, 02:36:24 PM »
Time has come to start our May GB. I've been looking forward to this one for some time as the Bf-110 is one of the most beautiful twin engine warplanes built (in my opinion).

I'll be working on at least two Zerstorers in this build, a 1967-issue Monogram 1/72 scale machine and another old one, the 1/48 Fujimi C/D. When we get home later this week I'll get some work done and photos posted.

All are invited to build! :-wave

Here is my first update on the Bf-110.

The very old Monogram 1/72 kit has nice exterior detailing and looks pretty accurate overall. There is basically no interior, however, not uncommon among the kits if the sixties. I added a floor and some boxes to add a bit of texture in there, but this will be built with canopy closed so I didn't go all-out. I did use the kit decals for the instrument panels as they add some color to the cockpits. Here's a shot of the assembled basic parts after painting the interior pieces:

I also started a small bit of work on the 1/48 Fujimi C/D. This is an old kit also and benefits from some extra work. Here are both engine cowls with the blank oil cooler outlet shown on the left and the beginnings of adding the open outlet on the right. I simply drilled a series of holes and then started carving and filing. When done these will have a nice open shape as they should.

Here you are work in the moment on this kit. Kit I have is from 1967 and still unbeaten in regard to its overall shape accuracy  :-clap Only problem is that this kit is poor with details so I will use Eduard set for upgrade. Note that Eduard develop set for Airfix kit but as well Airfix kit is total failure I decide not to waste my time and focus on adopting this set to be used in Monogram old kit.

Excellent work guys :-ok I am amazed to see how well the Eduard set fits the old Monogram kit, it does make a huge difference in the appearance of the kit already!

I'll say it makes a huge difference! The original parts consist of little more than the pilot's seat and an instrument panel.

Here is the rudimentary cockpits of my kit. I only added a couple of sidewall longerons of styrene strip and a floor, with a few trinkets sprinkled around for accent. Notice also that No.1s Eduard set has the cannon receivers that go on the floor in the radio room. My model depicts a non-cannon equipped bomber so the floor in this area would be smooth. As stated earlier, the canopy will remain closed so I wasn't terribly concerned with the depth of detail, just enough to be convincing. The gunner's seat is from my first-ever model airplane, an early sixties B-24 that my older cousin let me build, kindling my passion for modeling.

Incidentally, this one is now ready for paint. If anyone is wanting to add a Bf-110 to their collection this is a fine, simple kit and old enough to be a very vintage model. :-ok
