Lets start new work- Spitfire :)) My kit is teh Italeri kit in 1/72 scale, no idea about the accuracy but it look like easy to build.
-
Here's my project. It looks like I'll have to convert to the C wing for the Seafire markings I'm planning. The decal sheet was purchased for another project and these are the "leftovers".

-
This one look better then mine, at least in level of accuracy :)
-
My Seafire idea has hit a snag. I'll be re-researching my markings options......hopefully I can do something a little different anyway!
-
...And here is mine: Spitfire MK II of the (Belgian) 350th Sqn.
Kit is Tamiya 1/72 Spitfire MK I, with conversion MK II from 3D-Kits; Aires cockpit interior; True details wheels; Eduard masks; and Syhart decals...
-
Powerful material!!!
-
:-ok
-
Indeed, draken! Very nice collection for your machine.
-
Typical Tamiya detail and fit here. I'm at a fork in the road at this point, however. If I build a Seafire I must convert the wing to C configuration. If I go out-of-box I need to source some decals. The B to C conversion doesn't look too hard so I think I'll attack the wings next.

-
There is something about building models that is always constant--I never know as much about a subject as I need to!
The Seafire IIc that I decided to build is quite a lot different than the Tamiya Spitfire Vb that comes from the box. After much research in various publications and on the web I finally began converting the wings. The kit wing has the cannon fairings in the wrong places for the C wing I needed. So, first of all, I filled the bulged areas inside the wing with CA glue and let this harden. Then the Dremel tool, files, and sandpaper removed the fairings on the outside. You can also see that Tamiya molded the wheel well openings in a somewhat oval shape. Before gluing the top and bottom panels together I'll use a small diameter Dremel sanding drum to make these round.
Here is the process on the upper wings. First the cannon fairing is removed. Also, on the kit wing there are two reinforcing strips and a bulge that provided clearance for the tire when the gear was retracted. These also are removed as the C wing didn't have them. The un-needed bumps and blisters are marked on the top panel and removed on the lower.
Once the fairings were removed I needed to construct new, larger, teardrop fairings that were large enough to accomodate the two cannon option for the C wing. The best way to do this was to use two bomb halves from the spares bin and simply cut them at an angle to get the fairing shape I wanted.
Here are both fairings installed. Later will be added a short cannon fairing for the second gun position. Some other panels will be scribed and one of the .303 guns must be moved outboard one rib.
Also the Seafire IIc I am constructing had a four blade Rotol propeller. I dug through the spares and other Spitfire kits I had but there were no good matches. So.....I filled two of the blade openings in the kit three-blade spinner and will add three new ones. The blade was quite easy. I simply went in the junk bin and found a blade that was a bit oversize (I think from a Skyraider prop) and filed it to the correct dimensions to match the Rotol blades in the kit.
Next will be the fuselage. This needs some reinforcing doublers added to the skin. The arresting hook and catapult spools also must be scratchbuilt.
-
Conversions become your main brand :-ok
-
Yep. I wanted to build this one out-of-the-box, too...... :-roll Then, the Seafire decals kept tempting me, and the next thing you know I'm scratchbuilding again. :-help
The wings are now assembled so I can move the .303 opening and then add the stub fairing for the second cannon mount. A hint for others who might do this modification to the 1/48 Tamiya wing is in order: When you remove the small wheel fairing bump in the inner wing be careful to also fill the cavity on the inside of the top wing panel. This is visible in the wheelwell after assembling the wing and is easily filled only before gluing the wing panels.
-
Excellent!!!
-
My part of the game...
-
:-ok
-
@Scott
Conversions become your main brand :-ok
I agree with you Srecko. Scott always have some interesting to show us. :-jump :-clap Great work Scott! :-clap Can't wait to see more work!! ;)
@Srecko
Your work is standardly fast,sooo... Go ahead!! :-clap :-clap
-
Great work guys :-ok It looks like you will be finished before I can even start :-dal Very interesting builds going on.

-
:-ok :-ok
-
Today I've prepared the cockpit detail set and with my Proxxon removed the reliefs on the half fuselage interiors.
I'm not familiar with such detail sets; I wanted to use this one simply to see how it works before to use the one included with the Spitfire IX given to me by Dominique Genard...
-
:-ok
-
That detail set looks really great!
I managed some more progress on the Seafire, primarily on the fuselage modifications. Here you can see the reinforcing doublers that were added to strengthen the airplane for arrested landings.
Here is the arrestor hook and doublers on each side of the fuselage for the catapult spools.
And the wings and fuselage after a first primer coat and cockpit components painted.

-
Beautiful work! :-clap :-clap
-
Yeahhhhh :-ok
-
Great!
-
Cockpit, basically from the kit with the exception of use of Airscale instrument decals. I really like these and highly recommend them!
Since this photo was taken I've added the throttle/mixture/propeller linkage and the alighting gear hydraulic lines. Then the fuselage halves were glued together. Next will be seat harnesses and then the cockpit can be inserted.
-
Look so nice mate!
-
Faast work, and the cockpit is niceee! :-ok
-
That's the great thing about building top-quality model kits--everything fits perfectly and not much needs to be added. This kit is much like the Airfix Bf-109E I built last year, just a lot of fun and not much effort needed. The mods I've done were my own choice, but I'll get another of these kits to build as a box-stock model one of these days.
-
Small parts are in place and now it get second coat of filler to secure all joint lines.
-
:-ok
-
Excellent work both of you
-
Moving forward rapidly, No.1!
-
Thank you :))
-
Here is a photo of the home-made forward catapult fittings. The sling would be hooked to each of these and then into the shuttle in the carrier deck catapult track.
Then, finishing the cockpit insert and shoulder harness.
And assembly of the wing and fuselage. The red filler you see is about all that was needed on the entire kit.
-
I like this catapult fittings :-clap
-
Me too! :-clap :-clap
Great job on whole kit. ;)
-
Stunning...
-
Thanks, fellows, but the credit goes to Tamiya. This model literally has fallen together on its own. I only wish the manufacturer had done the C wing rather than the less-used B, but it's still a great kit with just a few tiny issues.
Incidentally, the catapult lugs are made from sewing pins that I just bent 90 degrees with a tiny styrene brace in front.
The undersides received their coat of Sky this morning. I LOVE :-love that ancient Humbrol paint!

Very nice, Scott!

Here's one more photo of the decaling process taken yesterday.
The airplane is now finished and I'll get some photos taken tomorrow.
-
US markings stand great on Spitfire :-ok
-
There's something of a story to this markings choice, No.1. I'll post that history along with the photos tomorrow.
-
Nice! ;)
-
Wonderful!
-
As promised, a few photos of the finished Seafire. I haven't enough time to write the historical material but I'll do that tonight and add some more photographs.

And a P.S. request:
Does anyone have a set of standard wingtips for the Spitfire in their spares? I need a set of normal tips (and perhaps an early rudder) for a 1/48 ICM Mk.IX. I thought the kit came with them but it doesn't. :-red
-
Kit is nice done mate :-ok I am afraid I have no tips at all for Spitfires :(
-
Splendid! :-ok
-
Okay, here is the historical reference for this model:
As I was looking through my leftover decals this Seafire caught my eye. After reading a little, I realized that this particular airplane flew combat patrols during the Operation Torch landings of which my father was part. He used to mention Spitfires quite frequently when we talked about North Africa so I felt like I should build this machine.
The actual airplane was Seafire IIc MB156 of 885 Squadron. She was flown from the carrier HMS Formidable and S Lt J.D. Buchanan shot down a French DB7 during operations over Algiers Bay. The temporary American stars were overpainted over the FAA roundels in an effort to make the Vichy troops think Torch was an all-U.S. operation. The photo I have of this airplane shows that it was nearly factory-fresh when Torch was underway, hence the lack of any real weathering on my model.

@Scott
Beautiful work mate!! I like with this markings! And great job on conversion!! One word-splendid! :-clap :-clap :-clap
@Srecko
Go ahead!!! :)) :)) :-tri
-
Few more steps...
-
:-ok
-
Cockpit protected ;)
-
Rapid Build!!!!
-
Thank you mate :) I miss to take few more images and it get coat of black on all surfaces and now it have green at the top. Tomorrow I will paint dark grey.
-
Great work, Scott and Srecko!!! :-ok
-
Thank you :)
-
Thanks, y'all!
Here's my next British project, this time a restoration. (I know it isn't a Spit, but kinda fits here...)
-
Feel free to open new topic if you like for Hurry :))
-
I will start a new topic for the Hurricane. I'm having some problems with the markings for its restoration, though. I originally built this with the early two-blade propeller but I'm thinking of something later, maybe even a different nationality.
-
Paint over :))
-
Your Spitfire looking good Srecko!! :-clap :-ok
-
Not any more... peel off paint problem :(
-
Why,where? :( :-think
-
....
-
I need to send you some of that un-sticky tape........
Ironic that both our Spitfires had this paint problem. :-wall
-
Ha ha- I just wanted to email you and ask you about the tape... thank you mate :))
-
Last night I have make mixture of alcohol and acetone and wash out all paint from kit. Little sand over with 2000 grit sand paper and spray with Base White top coat. This morning I start paint again with bottom grey.
-
That's modeling spirit! ;)
-
Yes, paint, paint again...... :-clap :-clap
Here's another Spit I bought at the "used kit" section of our hobby shop. The decals are ruined from age but the parts are all in there. I'm using the normal wingtips from this on my MkIX and this will possibly get built also.
-
:-ok
-
:-ok
-
Niceee... :-jump
-
I went ahead and started the Hasegawa kit that I intended for parts only. I've got enough remains to construct something, so here goes.
-
I like this green in cockpit. ;)
-
Cockpit finished, then the major parts assembled. The wingtips came from an ICM Mk.IX that is in the queue. This old Hasegawa kit fits fairly decently, though it demanded some work getting the wing dihedral at the right angles. It's certainly not as nice as the Tamiya Seafire from earlier in this GB, but it isn't the worst kit I've ever built.

:-ok
-
I am waiting for low tack tape to continue work
-
:-ok
-
:-ok
-
Tape has entered the mail system today.
-
Thank you :)
-
Here's the underside of my Vb. I experimented with the paint on this by first spraying a varying coat of neutral grey as a base and then applying the RAF grey in order to get some fading/wear/streaking effect.
-
:-ok
-
Are you satisfied?
-
It doesn't show on the photograph, but the effect looks pretty good in person. With further weathering I'll be satisfied I think.
-
:-ok
-
Ocean grey today, with some of the toothpaste method underneath for chipping paint.
-
And the Green is next :-ok
-
Can't wait to see final look! :-jump
-
Green.
I'll let the paint cure a bit before washing off the toothpaste, then gloss clear and decals.
-
:-ok
-
Yes!
-
Green... good work but red around the spinner is remarkable piece of work!!!
-
Masking the spinner for a simple division like this is not hard, it is the spiral markings that the Luftwaffe was so fond of that I find difficult! Here's how I did the masking on this one. First I painted it all white and then masked it with tape. Then it was just to spray the red and it's done.
I've got another method and I'll post that on Sall's "Some Modeling Techniques" thread.
-
Great mate, making tube with tape is excellent idea!
-
:-ok
-
Today I completed the Hasegawa Mk.Vb. When I first picked this kit up in the "salvage" bin at my hobby shop I was only going to use it for parts, specifically the normal wingtips. Now I'm very glad I decided to build it. This isn't as nice as the Tamiya Vb I built at the beginning of this GB, but then again, it's quite a bit older kit. The airplane still "looks" like a Spitfire and I enjoyed putting it together. I would call it an out-of-the-box build with two exceptions, the tips came from an ICM MkIX and the little extension on the antenna mast is scratchbuilt. The decals came from an ICM Yak 9 kit. If you use the kit decals in the older ICM kits make sure you give them a good coat of clear before using as these were somewhat brittle. I saved them all, but it took much patience. The paint chipping was mostly done with the toothpaste method and various things were used to weather the airplane to how it should have looked after long service.

This last photo shows just how much oil the Merlin could leak. I've had the good fortune to visit with a few men who maintained aircraft with earlier marks of the Merlin and they all lamented how hard it was to keep them from leaking oil.

Soviet :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
I agree with Srecko,i like this Soviet sample!! :-clap :-clap :-clap
Also i like chipping and weathering. ;)
-
Sweet!!!
-
Very nice :-ok Of course I really like it in Soviet markings :-clap
Ernie
-
I realize this is after the March deadline, but here is my Mk.IX. This is an ICM LF.IX kit I bought at an antique store. Unfortunately for me this kit only includes the larger pointed rudder and had the cropped wingtips. I did a wingtip swap with the Hasegawa Mk.Vb (the last one in this GB with Soviet markings) and cut the rudder from an ancient Monogram Spitfire I had in the spares bin.
-
:-ok :-clap
-
The IX is under way. This build will really add to my spares collection as ICM includes a complete Merlin and gun bay bits that I won't be using. The cockpit goes together quite nicely and the fit seems pretty good. There is a fair amount of flash on some of the parts but it cleans off easily. I'm building this and a Bf-109E at the same time on the same bench and managed to get both airplanes this far in about two hours.
-
:-ok
-
This is the first ICM Spitfire I've built and I've found it a little more challenging than the Tamiya or Hasegawa kits. One reason is that there is a complete engine set and the option to remove all the cowling sections. This adds some complexity to the front of the fuselage but isn't too hard to keep in alignment. I decided to first assemble the wing to the fuselage and then add the forward bulkheads to strengthen the cowl and cowling area.
The wing-to-fuselage fit is fair but does require some filling on the underside and rear of the fillet fairings. The fit of the upper wing panels to the fuselage sides is much better. As I mentioned earlier my kit has quite a lot of thin flash on many of the parts that must be carefully removed before assembly.
You can see a lot of filler on the wingtips. This is because the Hasegawa tips I'm using are a bit thinner in profile than the ICM wings, which seem to be the right thickness. I noticed the difference on the clipped tips that come with the Hasegawa kit so I used the ICM short tips on the Soviet bird.
-
Nice progres mate! :-ok :-clap
-
:-ok
-
I restart my build, first work with new tape, hope all will be fine.
:-flo
-
Hope that everything will be ok with new tape. ;)
-
It is perfect, I have remove it a hour ago and I seen no problem with tape! Perfect one- no surface coat damaged, no traces from glue from tape, no leaks!
-
Great news! :-jump :-clap
-
:))
-
Great! No extra adhesive stuck to the surfaces?
-
No my friend- just perfect :-razz And just few minutes ago I have apply gloss coat over it. I guess that tomorrow I will work on decals but this depend from my work
-
The IX got its underside paint last night along with the other two projects.
I have a question for y'all. Does anyone have an exact match for RAF Azure Blue as used in the MTO/North Africa? I'm told Humbrol's equivalent is not correct and Model Master has no equivalent. Vallejo has a newer color that I'm tempted to try if you folks don't have anything. Thanks in advance!
-
:-ok
-
I just purchased a container of Vallejo "RAF Azure" that looks pretty close to the real thing.
-
This IX will be in the normal European colors because I didn't think I'd find the Azure blue for the desert scheme. Upper grey went on this and the little Bf-109 tonight.

Very fast!

Nice! :-clap
-
Decals are over :)) Top roundels look too big but I have no any reference image to see so I let it as is :-/ :-think
-
Great! Look nice. :-clap
-
Looks great, No.1. The British had several dimensions of roundels so I wouldn't worry about that too much!
The Mk.IX is curing and will get clear gloss coat tonight (maybe, if time allows).

-
Good job on paint Scott! :-clap :-ok
-
Thank you mate :-ok
-
Nice work!!!
-
Almost complete. Need to do some leaks, fade and dirt and put radio wire. Not before Monday ;)
-
Look nice! :-ok
-
Looks great, No.1! I like the markings choice with the G on the rudder--uncommon in the RAF.
-
True- this also catch my eye when I see it first time :)
-
Here's the ICM Mk.IX in 31st Fighter Group markings. I couldn't resist the Lady Ellen III markings (my lovely wife's name is Ellen as well) and the 31st Group flew missions over my dad's head when he was in Italy. The ICM kit is a bit fiddly in places but turns into a nice Spitfire. It's pretty well out-of-the-box except for the markings and Hasegawa wingtips.

Here's my current collection of 1/48 Spits. I don't think I'll be working on any more Spitfires for a while (I've run out of kits.....but I would like to do a Mk. I and a Griffon machine at some point). ;)
The Soviet machine is the Hasegawa Vb, the Seafire conversion is the Tamiya Vb, the Mk IX is from ICM, and the Australian Mk VIII is a 1980s build of the Otaki kit.

-
:-ok
-
I'm back in that GB!!!
Well, I'm not sure that I will have nice result with all the inserts in the cockpit of the MK II... I'm wondering if it is really a need when you build a 1/72 aircrft with a little cockpit!
So, I have bought another kit and started the work on it. This one will be made quasi out of the box, except of course the modifications needed to transform a Spit I into a Spit II...
First photo depicts all the parts needed for the transformation; and the second one the beginning of the work.
-
Nice to see you in action :-ok
-
Thank you my friend! It's time to resume some builds...
-
Great!
-
Nice. ;)

Thanks!
Ready for the painting phase...

Progress! :-cool
-
Thank you!!!
-
Look great!! :-clap :-ok
-
Thank you mate!
Good update today: matt varnish (Pébéo) airbrushed, then weathering with some Tamiya pastels... I'm happy with the result!
More than that: the decal provided by Tamiya to represent the seatbelt simply looks great!!!
-
On image look like etched one :-ok
-
On image look like etched one :-ok
Yes, absolutely!!! The kit don't asks for detailing set(s) in my humble opinion...
-
Soooooo real!! :-obey :-eek
-
Thank you mate!
Well, cockpit is build and closed, half fuselage glued... On the third photo you can see two of the elements of the upgrade kit...
-
I like this moment when kit get in basic shape :))
-
Me too!
-
A little bit of putty needed, but not too much...
-
Nice progress mate! ;)
-
Have you try new tape?
-
Thank you!
Have you try new tape?
No, not yet. But in the next few days well, masking the canopy of the injected Mirage...
-
Little progress...
-
Little but important, after this you go to assembly and you are close to final painting :-ok
-
Exactly my friend! ;)
-
:-ok
-
Oil wash...

Radiator finished: matt varnish, then Tamiya pastels

Primer is airbrushed...
-
Wonderful mate :) You do that with more attention then I do :-ok
-
Look good! :-ok
-
Duck Egg Green and Yellow are generously airbrushed...
-
:-ok
-
Good progress!
-
Thank you! ;)
-
For the first time I've used the fine masking tape, and it's a pleasure to use it!
Then, airbrushing of sea grey; aluminium and black
-
Thats what I like to hear- fine tape is good :))
-
Nice,nice!! :-clap :-ok
-
Thank you!
Masking of the lower surfaces, and then airbrushing of Dark sea Grey
-
Absolute protection :-clap :-ok
-
Very nice!
-
Thank you friends!
Today, I've masked the Spit with frisket and Tamiya tape. Then, I've airbrushed the Dark Green and removed all the masks.
I've just a minor correction to do, in the yellow paint on the left wing... Will do that in the next few days.
-
Excellent mate and must say that your overall progress is so good (with note that you work on few kits in same time!!!) :-ok :-clap
-
Thank you!
My first goal is to finish the Spit and the I-16; then I will come back on the Mirage V (injected one) and begin the two 1/144 MiG-21...
And, in parallel, work on some AFV's!
-
A lot of work and I hope that you will enjoy in that :))
-
Thank you!
My first goal is to finish the Spit and the I-16; then I will come back on the Mirage V (injected one) and begin the two 1/144 MiG-21...
And, in parallel, work on some AFV's!
I read your list of projects with some relief on my part as I have six or seven projects going at this time, too.
The Spitfire looks beautiful!!!! :-clap :-ok
-
Thank you mates!
-
Look very nice.. :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you, Sall!
-
After having partially masked the left wing, I've airbrushed yellow paint to correct the little problem; then I've removed the masks. Result is nice!
-
:-ok
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Well, I was not satisfied with the Dark Sea Grey: in fact, I converted references for Gunze into Tamiya. The Dark Sea Grey from Tamiya sounds to me a little bit too "blue"...
So I decided to go to the Brussels Air Museum today, and to see the real aircrafts: Spitfire IX & Spitfire XIV.
As it seems, Spit KIV Dark Sea Grey is more lighter than the one I used - But it's not the case for the Spit IX, more similar to my paint...
And a French friend of mine said me that there were many variations in that paint, that was darker on the first Spits than on the latest ones...
So, I've decided to keep the colour I've used "as is"; I will just use pastels to lighten that paint...
-
Real Ocean Grey have a tint of green
(http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/wp-content/gallery/bs-ww2-colors/ocean-grey.jpg)
-
Well, it's far from the taint I have... But I will keep my kit as it is...
-
Yesterday, I weathered lightly my Spit then airbrushed Pébéo gloss varnish.
Today, after excellent events in the morning (I'm granddad for the thirst time!!!), I've had this evening a decal setting seance...
-
Ha ha- how some events can bring you more power :))
-
Yes! ;)
-
No.1
Interesting, I didn't know about real Ocean Grey tint.....
Thanks to share
-
You are welcome mate :)
-
Nice work on Spit mate, and congratulations for grandson or granddaughter!!! :-clap :-clap
-
Great looking Spit!
I've got some very, very old Humbrol tin of Dark Sea Grey and it has a bit of a greenish tint to it. It looks too green when you spray it on, but when the Dark Green is applied everything seems to be just about like yours looks.
-
Thank you mates!
Sall, it's a grandson ;)
Scott, thanks for the infos. I'm finally happy with the result...
-
Oil wash today...
-
Excellent work with oils, like Verlinden :-ok
-
Thank you my friend!
-
Very nice work!! :-clap :-clap
-
Excellent!
-
Thank you!
-
Pébéo matt varnish airbrushed; all parts glued... Now I have to make some weathering with pastels.
Unfortunately, some flash with little decals from Tamiya... A contrario, Syhart decals are from exceptional quality!
-
Without any dirt it look great!
-
Yes,i like it to!! :-clap
-
Thank you!
I have already weathered the lower surfaces; I like the effect... Photos will follow tomorrow.
-
:-ok
-
Use of pastels... I LOVE that!!! :-love
-
Wonderful result mate :-clap
-
Thank you! :)
-
Beautiful results!!!!
-
Yes,very nice!! :-clap
-
Thank you!!!
Well, we're going to the end now... Cables are ready
-
This look like real steel?
-
This is, my friend! Wire steel, bought some years ago from Smallparts.com, USA...
-
I looking for something like this mate... hope you can send me link
-
Sure my friend:
www.smallparts.com.au
(so, it's Australia and not USA)
Well, with my MK II being near to completion, I cannot resist to the temptation to begin a new Spitfire: this time it will be a Spitfire MK XVI. Not the aircraft of Raymond Lallemand (with British cockades) as I first envisaged to build, but another aircraft of the 350 (Belgian) Sqn, this time bearing Belgian cockades, at the end of 1945!
Kit is Italeri, in fact I think it's the mold from Occidental. Not perfect at all, there is a strange line across the wings that will have to disappear. fitting trials let to think that some work is awaiting me... I will use Eduard PE, and of course Syhart decals.
The kit was bought on eBay.co.uk a couple of years ago. Sounds that the box made a close encounter with water, and the parts were partially removed from sprue. But kit is complete; decals did not suffered from water - and as I will use Syhart ones, that would finally not have been a problem!
First work is the removing of som wing panels. As you can see on the photos, the good one (provided in the box) is inverted, due to the position of the gun in the wing. The new panel is fixed by 4 little dots only, so I reinforced with Evergreen.
I've also glued first PE elements...
-
Thank you for link and it is great to see new Spitfire :-ok
-
;)
-
This will be a good build for me to watch as I've never built an Occidental Spitfire.
I've had in mind to build a properly marked Belgian machine so I can't wait for the end product!
-
Go ahead! :-clap
-
Putty on the wings... :-dal
-
Wrong panels as I can see...
-
Well, not really. It was not a "real" engraving, but a kind of fine line... Lightly engraved. Molding problem? I don't know.
...But that line have to disappear anyway...
-
All right mate :-ok
-
Wings are sanded and look better now...
-
:-ok :-clap
-
Crisp work :-ok
-
Thank you!
-
Well, the Spitfire MK II is now completely finished!!! Nice setting (hard one) for the placement of cables... But it's OK and here is the beast.
Last photo (over a mirror) is the way I will present the kit in contest...
-
Very nice Spitfire, and just the right amount of weathering and paint chipping!
-
Thank you Scott!!! ;)
-
Best luck in contest mate :)
-
Beautiful Spit mate!! Great job! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you! :)
-
I'm actually in Dijon, France, due to dramatic events here...
In the train, I've read a book of my collection: "350th Fighter Squadron 1941-2006" - Colonel Aviateur J. JACOBS. The book contains a photo of the Spitfire MK II MN-A and gives the name of the pilot:
Wing Commander Désiré GUILLAUME; first Belgian CO of the 350th Sqn, from 20/03/42 until 20/12/42.
I'm glad to have found this information...
-
:-ok
-
Very nice job!! My second favorite single engine fighter of WWII is Spitfire!!
Glad to see it!!
-
Thank you!!!
-
Back on the Spitfire XVI...
Well, I was not happy with the result obtained for the wings. So, I've decided to apply more putty; to sand again and then to rescribe panels lines.
Photos below show you the different phases: putty sanded; dymo tape used as a guide for rescribing; rescribing in progress and the final result.
See the last one: now, I'm fully happy and work can continue!
-
Good work mate :-ok It look like your take is some kind of ticker and wider type?
-
Well, it's the same tape, my friend. Just my technique that gives a false impression: I cut in zigzag the tape on the lenght. To make it less large; and to make two guides in one same length...
Why in zigzag?
To be sure that the good (right) side is well placed...
-
Thank you for tip :-ok
-
Yes, good tip. ;)
And good result! :-clap
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Preparation of the photoetched elements... It's a slow and long work...
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Great looking photoetch, I see. :-ok
-
Thank you!
Still in progress with photoetched parts... See first photo. I have also glued the PE elements of the wheel bays, and opened the door in the fuselage, to be replaced with... photoetch...
-
Very nice job! ;) :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you mate! ;)
-
I call this 'salad' :))
-
I call this 'salad' :))
You're right! ;)
-
Photoetch is in place now, except the pre-painted parts, that will be placed after the painting of the cockpit.
I've also glued together the upper and lower parts of the wings, and gived some "live" to the guns, making holes...
-
Nice detailes... ;) :-clap
-
Thank you mate!
Today, again, work on photoetched parts. But first, I gived some volume to the door with PVC glue. Then, I made from scratch a replacement part for the PE element that was eaten by the carpet monster. And, finally, PE, PE and PE again...
-
I just can say :-ok :-clap
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Exciting to see the PE elements coming together!
-
Great joooob!!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you!
Little progress...
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Little progress :-think From my point of view this is big progress, it weekend, friends and family time :-flo :-love
-
:) ;)
-
Finished with photoetch??? Nooooooooooooooooooooo... :))
:-dal :-dal :-dal :-dal :-dal
-
Uuuuuhhhhh :(
-
More and more detail!!!!
-
;)
Excellent set of PE, I must say...
-
Good job mate! ;) :-clap
-
Thank you! :)
-
Primer day... :-green
-
:-ok
-
All these parts make my head spin!!! :-eek :-cool
-
Interior green...
-
:-ok
-
:-ok
-
I like this green! :-ok
-
I think I will replace the kit part on the right by the one on the left, coming from a Hi Tech resin set...
-
There is certainly a different shape to the tip of the spinner!
-
I never note this details before :(
-
The spinner comes from Hi-Tech resin kit for a Spitfire IX. But it is a correct one; this is not the case of the one of the Italeri kit: see the top of the spinner...
And the kit part would have to be sanded once again, having defaults on the bottom section.
-
Definitely different shape!!! :(
-
Little progress...
-
Looking great!
Propellers always seem to be a chore to me, especially with the colored tips.....
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Thank you!!!
-
Oil wash (Abteilung 502 "Wash Brown")
-
:-ok :-clap
-
;)
-
Oil wash...
-
I like how it looks... ;) :-clap
-
All arranged, now assembly :))
-
All arranged, now assembly :))
Not yet: must place some rust; and use pastels of course ;)
-
Rust; matt varnish, pastels and... Assembly.
Nice work from Eduard with the photoetched elements.
...But Italeri kit is A REAL SH.T !!! During this session, I was by two times tempted to put in in the trashcan, to spare my time for GOOD kits!!! :-kr :-kr :-kr :-kr :-kr :-kr :-kr :-kr :-kr :-kr :-kr
...But well, for the time being, I continue...
-
Lets say this is last kit you have take from this range...
-
Sure. Due to the poor customer service from Italeri, I don't buy anymore Italeri kits. I have a few Italeri kits on my stash but no new will join those ones...
-
I've been tempted to put kits in the dustbin in the past, also, but I'm glad you're continuing with this one!
-
Thank you Scott. Honestly, I think that the bad moments are done now... I will just need for time and patience.
-
Glad to see progress here, although you have problems! ;) :-clap
I like you cockpit mate!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you!
This morning, looking at the diedre of the ailerons, I've broken the pitot tube... To be replaced of course...
-
:(
-
It becomes really bothering, indeed...
-
...The carpet monster just gived back the pitot... ;)
-
Hahaha :)
-
Putty...
-
Not much ;)
-
Fuselage, wings/fuselage, ailerons/fuselage... In the process, pitot broke again but was once again repaired...
-
:-ok
-
Sanding is finished. Now, rescribing...
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Ver smooth work :) Hope you will have no much panels to do
-
Thank you!
No, rescribing will not be too hard to do...
-
Primer airbrushed, that reveals some minor corrections to do with putty...
-
I guess this is tinny details, on image it display very smooth finish ;)
-
The jointure of the half fuselages just in front of the cockpit must be filled again with putty. The photo don't show that...
-
:-ok
-
Primer tells all!
-
Primer tells all!
True... ;)
-
After correction
-
After correction- perfection ;)
-
Hope so... ;)
-
Moving forward!
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Radiators received some masking tape; then undersurfaces were painted (Tamiya XF54)
-
Nice shade mate :-ok
-
Thank you!
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Well, after drying, Tamiya XF-54 reveals to be the color for upper surfaces: too dark for the under surfaces. What a mistake I made... :(
I've airbrushed Tamiya XF-83 Medium Sea Grey (like for my Spitfire MK II) on top of the XF-54 and that's from far better!!!
Now, going to Namur: cinéma: THE HOBBIT !!! :)
-
The movie was a great one! Excellent moment...
...And now, here is a photo of the good grey color
-
After good movie your work power is on :))
-
Good job! ;) :-clap
And have a good time in cinema! :-flo
-
Thank you!
On the other hand, I recommend you warmly to go to watch THE HOBBIT...
-
I know that book was famous many years ago, based on Dune (if I am right)
-
I know that book was famous many years ago, based on Dune (if I am right)
No my friend, it's not based on Dune. THE HOBBIT is the prequel of the Lords of the Rings and tell the adventures of Bilbo, when he discover the Ring... You will find in the movie weel known character like Gandalf, Sauron, etc...
-
All right, thank you for correction :-ok
-
My pleasure ;)
-
Yesterday, masking of the undersurfaces
-
...In the same time, outside...
-
Today, Tamiya XF-53
-
Absolute aviation atmosphere, outside and inside :))
-
Great!
-
Nice,nice!! :-clap Go forward!! :-clap
-
After masking phase and airbrushing of Dark Green, here is the result :-wave
-
It looks beautiful! Masking RAF subjects is always time consuming but the results can certainly be satisfying.
-
Yes, masking took me three hours of time...
-
Look very nice! :-clap
-
Thank you Sall!
Being waked up since 4:00 AM (insomnia), I've worked on th Spitfire: minor correction on the dark green (I had forgotten a little area to paint, low corner of the right wing) and painting of the exhausts in rust.
Next step will be painting of the position lights on the wings...
-
You have good concentration ;)
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Very good job mate! ;) :-clap
-
Thank you!
Well, the MK XVI is not finished yet, but I'm beginning a new Spitfire (build is made for a group build on a Belgian Dutch-speaking forum): Spitfire MK.V from Tamiya at 1/72 scale...
From the box, with the décals from Syhart for a Belgian Spit of the 350th Sqn...
-
Well well... isnpiration for me to push on builds I have in moment
-
:-green
And of course, work is continuing on the MK.XVI: preparation before airbrushing the position lights
-
Beauty!
-
Nice mate!! Go ahead!! :-clap :-tri
-
Thank you!
Spitfire XVI: position lights done...
-
Precise work!! :-clap
-
Thank you Sall, but I have inverted the colors of the position lights... :-red
So today first thing to do: correction.
Then, weathering...
-
You solved this, and it is most important!! :-clap
Go ahead mate, look very good! :-clap :-ok
-
Long time ago I have used Parafilm for large area protection :)
-
Parafilm... Never tried...
Well, after having airbrushed Pébéo gloss varnish this afternoon, I have placed all the decals this evening.
...What a desagreable surprise: the codes for my aircraft (often represented by a drawing in the decals notice) are not present!!! I needed for "TD" code, and it was not included... I had to solution that problem and finally, for the underwings codes, the "D" was missing. I used a "H" and a "0" to make a "D"; and for the fuselage where the "T" was missing, I used a "L" and a "E" to create the "T"...
Another problem to solve was: why by the hell did I made the aircraft with the door open??? That obliged me to cut the "MN" code before placing it... And that obliged me to temporarily remove the maskings of the cockpit...
Other than all those problems, all was fine... :-bat
-
Look nice!! :-clap
-
Despite above mentioned problems, you did it perfectly!!!
-
Thank you!
It's funny when you encounter problems that you can resolve... ;)
-
This looks wonderful!
I sometimes wish Supermarine hadn't put that door in the fuselage. It makes for more work, doesn't it!!!!
-
Agreed, Scott... ;)
-
Propeller ready :-love
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Great :-ok
-
Thank you! :)
-
Oil wash...
-
Extra fine work :-ok
-
Thank you my friend!
-
Looks really nice mate!!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you!
Well, the Spitfire XVI is finished now, but it was very laborious!!!
First, I have airbrushed Pébéo matt varnish this morning. Then on the afternoon, weathering with pastels, pigments and ink.
I'm not happy. It's a bad kit. Today, I encountered the following problems before to finish:
- Due to the bad plastic (very granulous), the transparent decals have silvering. I've tried to limit the effect but was not fully successful for the wings.
- The Pitot tube in PE sprong out of my hands. He had a point of cyano of it. Never recovered the part; I had to use the bad pitot of the kit as replacement part...
- The wheel tail broked in the process
- Gluing the radiators, I had to constate that there are not fitting well! Too late to correct that problem...
- Bad fitting of the windshield that needed for some paint correction
- The wheels legs are bad!!! There are "inverted"; I had to correct that.
At leats four times I had the intention to knock the kit and put it in my trashcan...
I'm just happy with my weathering and the fact that I'm stubborn: without that default, the kit would have been condamned.
I have better hope for the Tamiya Spitfire V...
-
I am sure that you could perfect this kit but this look fine to me :) Sometimes things does not goes as we want, even when we try our best. This is great work anyway and I am sure next one will be also great and bring you pleasure :-ok
-

I agree!! ;) I like this work mate! :-clap
-
Thank you!
...In fact, actually I'm furious with all those problems. Perheaps tomorrow the kit will look better at my eyes...
-
Even with all the problems you encountered I still find this a great result! You've overcome the problems nicely, in my opinon.
-
Thank you Scott!
-
Spitfire MK V: wings glued, and all the parts removed from sprue; and sanded
-
Next one! :-clap :-tri
-
Canopy is masked and the parts are ready for the painting phase
-
:-ok
-
;)
-
Good job! ;) :-clap
-
Thank you Sall!
-
Gunze H312 airbrushed
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Thanks for the update!
-
It was time to resume... ;)
-
Looking so good :)
-
Details painting...
-
:-ok :-clap
-
;)
-
Perfect!
-
Thank you! :)
-
Looking great and I see the door stayed closed. ;) :-ok
-
Looking great and I see the door stayed closed. ;) :-ok
Yes, door will remain closed. I own a cockpit detail set, but not a vacform canopy (needed to be cut) and have no intention to acquire one... 1/48 is more easy for detailing ;)
-
Oil wash...
-
A bit stronger but it is good in such tiny and not much open cockpit ;)
-
Yes, but the work is not finished yet: I will use pastels before to close the fuselage ;)
-
All right, lets see this action :)
-
'Wash day'! :-clap :-ok
-
Use of Tamiya pastel "Snow"; then assembly of the cockpir elements and finally fuselage and wings and ailerons are assembled together
-
Smooth fit ;)
-
Great job on your side! :-clap
-
Thank you!
-
Putty...
-
Just in case as I can see ;)
-
:-ok
-
Time to resume work: sanding done.
-
Sanding day! :)) :-clap
-
:-ok
-
Sanding day yes ;)
...And thank you!
-
White primer
-
White day and I get on my mind various song with 'white' in its name :))
-
:-ok
-
My favorite plane ! :-love :-love :-ok
-
Little progress...
-
Looks very nice! :-clap :-clap
-
Undersurfaces airbrushed
-
Beautiful underside!
-
:-ok
-
Thank you! ;)
-
:-ok :-clap
-
Yesterday I've masked the undersurfaces; and today I've airbrushed Tamiya XF53. Propeller also airbrushed in black (a kind of: in fact, 10 parts of black + 2 parts of dark grey)
-
I also use off black, it look better ;)
-
Good!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you! ;)
Firt, masking; then airbrushing (dark green); finally removing the masks... Some minor corrections needed but easy to do.
-
Lovely :-ok
-
Thank you! ;)
-
Nice work on camouflage! :-clap
How you do corrections? :-think
-
Nice work on camouflage! :-clap
How you do corrections? :-think
Thank you SAll!
Corrections are made, for some, with a fine paintbrush; for others, camoflaged with alu (weathering ;) )
-
Beautiful Spitfire!!
-
Thank you Scott!
Today, light weathering then Pébéo gloss varnish
-
...And decals are set! I like the little Belgian roundel on port side, under the exhausts...
-
Beauty :))
-
Thank you! :)
-
Funny the way how some details can be botheing and irritating...
"Game of one mistake" :))
Compare photo to the left and with the one to the right... You see?
IT WAS OBSESSIONAL!!! :-wall
-
Larger images could be more helpful :(
-
Sure.
See in front of the aircraft: white ellipse visible around the Belgian cockade on first photo. Corrected on the second one...
-
I seen this, all right ;)
-
:-clap :-ok
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
This is great with decals applied!
-
Oil wash...
-
Great focus in details ;)
-
Thank you my friend!
-
This morning, Pébéo matt varnish airbrushed... Then, all the remaining little parts (propeller, wheels) are glued
-
...And this afternoon: pastels from Tamiya!
Kit is finished... Don't know what will be next Spitfire: still remaining two 1/48 (MK IX & MK Vb) and one 1/72 (XIVa)
-
I know this will be masterpiece :))
-
Thank you! ;)
-
This is great! I like both machines side-by-side to give an idea of the changes made during development of the Spitfire.
-
Thank you Scott! ;)
-
I like it mate! :-clap Excellent job!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you Sall! ;)
