I'll let the paint cure a bit before washing off the toothpaste, then gloss clear and decals.

Masking the spinner for a simple division like this is not hard, it is the spiral markings that the Luftwaffe was so fond of that I find difficult! Here's how I did the masking on this one. First I painted it all white and then masked it with tape. Then it was just to spray the red and it's done.

I've got another method and I'll post that on Sall's "Some Modeling Techniques" thread.

Today I completed the Hasegawa Mk.Vb. When I first picked this kit up in the "salvage" bin at my hobby shop I was only going to use it for parts, specifically the normal wingtips. Now I'm very glad I decided to build it. This isn't as nice as the Tamiya Vb I built at the beginning of this GB, but then again, it's quite a bit older kit. The airplane still "looks" like a Spitfire and I enjoyed putting it together. I would call it an out-of-the-box build with two exceptions, the tips came from an ICM MkIX and the little extension on the antenna mast is scratchbuilt. The decals came from an ICM Yak 9 kit. If you use the kit decals in the older ICM kits make sure you give them a good coat of clear before using as these were somewhat brittle. I saved them all, but it took much patience. The paint chipping was mostly done with the toothpaste method and various things were used to weather the airplane to how it should have looked after long service.

This last photo shows just how much oil the Merlin could leak. I've had the good fortune to visit with a few men who maintained aircraft with earlier marks of the Merlin and they all lamented how hard it was to keep them from leaking oil.

I realize this is after the March deadline, but here is my Mk.IX. This is an ICM LF.IX kit I bought at an antique store. Unfortunately for me this kit only includes the larger pointed rudder and had the cropped wingtips. I did a wingtip swap with the Hasegawa Mk.Vb (the last one in this GB with Soviet markings) and cut the rudder from an ancient Monogram Spitfire I had in the spares bin.
