Yak and LaGG Series GB
« on: October 12, 2012, 04:27:42 PM »
Time to start something that has been in the unbuilt pile for a significant time. I purchased two or three ICM Yaks some time ago so it's time to build one. This is a T/DD/K variant with a few optional parts:

Here are the parts trees on the drying towel. There is a lot of mold release on my sample that was washed off with soap and water:

Decal sheet that I robbed from for my VVS Airacobra last year:

Thanks, mates!

I'm no expert on the Yak series but the kit looks pretty nice to me. I may use a few bits from the Accurate Miniatures Yak-1 to enhance this a little, but it will mostly be out-of-box. The only true "drawback" in here (to my eye, anyway) is that they molded the canopy in one piece.

I had much spare time yesterday so it was possible to get this Yak to this point:

As a familiar method, I am using this first kit as a kind of "practice" for later builds of the same family of kits. When I dug into it I found that the cockpit is really rather basic. I added a few details with wire and styrene bits, but not to an extreme. When assembling the interior and fuselage halves there was a small problem with the cockpit floor. After filing the sides of it down a bit everything slotted together. I also decided to glue the open cowling panels on and this took a small amount of filing to get a snug fit. Fitting the wing to the fuselage was no problem at all with just a bit of filler needed on the lower aft interface with the fuselage. It's quite a simple, straightforward model to build, really.

This -9 version is really not as nice as the -7, especially the cockpit.

That is good to know, as I do beleive I have a -7 kit, as well as one or two others, off the top of my head though I do not remember which Mks. they are though.

Here are the other two ICM Yaks in my collection. These two were purchased at various times in the "consignment sale" section of my local hobby shop for around U.S. $8.00 each. First, the -7:

And the -7V trainer:

Somewhere I also have an Accurate Miniatures Yak-1 that I'll try to find.

I only have four kits! ;) However.........there are a lot of extra decals in that Yak-9 sheet. :-tri

There are a nice variety of subjects for the Yak series so a big collection is certainly possible. It's too bad that more photos don't exist of this interesting Air Force.
