Title: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Academy 1/72)
Post by: draken35 on February 27, 2016, 11:51:13 AM
Well, I know that I have said that I limit the current build in progress, but this build is a little bit special:

The kit was begun by my friend Pascal. Assembly was quasi completed, but painting stage made in my workbench caused him many problems; the paint had to be removed twice... And I must say that the second time, he wanted to throw the kit in the basket but I convinced him to keep it and it's myself that removed the paint...

The kit was sleeping on the stash since two years approximatively. Pascal is no more making models since that time because he is building a 1/1 Kiebitz (ultra light aircraft)!
So, making some "investigations" on the stash I re-discovered that little kit and as I have an idea for a "what-if" aircraft, I asked to PAscal to give me the Wildcat...

here is the kit in the state he was given to me

First work was to finish the build, and to prepare for paint. Some Vallejo putty was used

Today, primer was airbrushed.

I will receive soon special decals for a what-if aircraft; and painting will be (normally) fast to do

Thank you!

Yesterday was masking day; today airbrush day... Dark green airbrushed then all the masks removed.

I like the actual result...

Well, after a short moment of reflexion, I've decided not to use the "Marine" decals for an aircraft camoflaged for combat over terrestrial landscapes...
So I used "classic" Belgian cockades. Those ones come from a PJ Productions decal sheet. Nice but a little bit of wjite was visible around a part of the red color so, with a fime paintbrush and Vallejo red I had to correct that.
The thistle comes from a decal sheet for the Mirage 5.
Code 26 comes from a old Jan Peeters decal sheet giving codes for Belgian modern aircrafts...

Now I can express the idea I had when you first applied the silver on the bottom---I initially thought this might be a Latvian "what-if" version painted to be like the Gladiators they operated. I like this better, though!

FINISHED!!!

I've airbrushed matt varnish (Pébéo); removed the cockpit masks; used pastels and paintbrusehd gloss varnis on the position lights.

I love that little Wildcat...
