Fokker Dr.I (triplane) EDUARD 1/48
« on: April 30, 2011, 05:30:56 PM »
I'm starting a new project for a GB on a French forum: the Fokker triplane.

Eduard's kit is splendid. I own the combo box...

Here are the plastic parts (x2, of course: there are two aircrafts in the box)

The photoetch, the masks and the decals (in the background, other decals that I have in stock - I'm not decided yet for the decoration)

I will also use Karaya Spandau's and Microsculpt "Streaky camo".

First stage: removing the plastic parts from the sprue, and here you have what is needed in plastic for a triplane...

Nicest machine ever :-love :-love
The only thing I'm skeptical about is Streaky camo as a decal... Don't know, but I'd always opt for good old paintbrush :-think On the other hand, never ever would try to do lozenge by hand... Therefore, this just might be a quicker and less painful solution :-/
Regarding markings - all of them are beautiful, just pick at random :-ok

Once, if we ever come to this group build, I'd again dig some 5-6 boxes from the cellar :-roll, all of them 1/72 Eduard except one Roden F.I

First to say is that the photo was taken with a (bad) day light and don't represent the exact colors.
Then, as you says, it's a painful solution and I will give a try to those decals. Possible that the second Dr.I of the combo box will be paintbrushed; that could be interresting to compare both methods...
And yes, there are so many nice decos for the triplane that it's difficult to choose... But it seems that for this one I will opt for the Marine Jasta deco of the box, perheaps my preferred one after all...

Finally I've decided not to use Karaya set of Spandaus: Eduard did an excellent job providing a "base" where you can add their grid in photoetch.
Karaya set will serve for another kit (maybe de D.VII...)

First, I rolled the grid on a toothpick. Why? For two reasons:
1) Toothpick is "solid", you have no risk to deform the grid
2) Toothpick is a little bit larger than the kit's machinegun; so it's more easy to place the grid and then you have just to gently finish to roll...

I have also made holes; and after that I removed that parts with a rasor blade; simply because they will be a problem for the decals from Microsculpt. I will replace those parts after having placed the decals...
