Title: F4 G Phantom II
Post by: modellius on March 17, 2018, 01:18:09 PM
Well, maybe the best way to start this topic is :

A long time a go in a galaxy far far away......

About a 15 years ago I got this model on real barging on one show in the Czech Republic, the box was with Aires cockpit, Eduard PE and mask
Couldn't resist, I just love the rhino so I got it and didn't really know what to do with it, didn't like the painting......However during the years I never give up on it, when I saw something related to the F-4 i got it, so I got a really almost everything that can be found out there on the market, maybe the one thing I don't have is the vacuum cockpit......... But still no painting that I like, but sometimes when I got some free time I searched the internet and suddenly I find it ! It was love at the first sight !

And now let we see what will this F-4 be made off

Beside the internet I got some literature as well I will return on this subject as the build go by.... At the end I got the Hi decal line decal sheet, they provide the matching shark mouth and Afterburner Decal sheet for the F-16 will by used for numbers

Good markings choice! (Though my buddy wouldn't think so--his F-106 was expended as a drone and he doesn't particularly like pilotless USAF jets!)

Thanks friends !

Well, during a day and a half I made more progress on this one than in one month time on the Tornado.... That says a lot, doesn't it ?

However, the books of Eagle Aviation Phantom Under The Skin Vol.1 and Vol.2 by Iaonis Lekkas & Ilias Gkonis are amazing, actually you can do anything you want, pictures are really under the skin, everything is shown with excellent pictures and it can be seen that modeler made them, no hidden areas at all, everything shown is from more angles and no " black spots " of any of them....... I contacted Mr. Lekkas with the question can I post some pictures from the book to show you what I'm talking about, sorry to say no respond yet.....

The basic idea of this project is to make a diorama, fuel system will be seen and both seats ( Eduard's Brassin seats are models for them selves so the diserve to be taken out of the cockpit and to bee seen separately ) and I will make both engines taken out, so the fuselage will be open and the engine bays will be seen as well. A big project no doubt, the biggest I ever done.

First step was to mark the areas that will be cuted out, after I cut them out. Aires gives the Electronic bays but after looking in the book I find out it is actually an Air Conditioning unit. The right is installed and looks good, fits in nice, after finishing I made the lost details right away, didn't want to leave it for later on, better this way I think.

And the start of the fuel system, first step was to made the " channel " which goes in to the fuselage, details and pipes are the next step.

I was on some training in the firm but the trainer was late for an hour or so so I made some scatches of how diorama will look with some basic hangar construction but this will most probably change during the build....

The basic construction of the fuel system is more or less done, dry fitted in to the fuselage, still hoses, pipes, cables to be made but before that I have a lot more to do, the next step will be  the cockpit, the fuel system can be installed only after ccokpit and intakes...... And the music choice for this one  :)

And the intakes. I started with the left side, you can see the difference, I had to make some corrections on resin intake, True Details gives the first row of the blades to simulate the engine, but like I sad, the engines will be out so this part had to be removed only pure intake channel to be visible, and some heavy surgery on the fuselage as well

The cockpit. This is maybe the best Aires product I ever seen, sharp details, much of them, an excellent set must say. Now, I have seats from Aires and Eduard Brasssin and both are very good looking so don't know yet what will be, Aires, Brassin or combination of these.....Time will tell..... First step was to remove the seat positioning blocks in the cockpit and replace the floor panel, the front cockpit is detailed up, only a few more springs and wires but more or less that is it, time to move to the rear cockpit section

The cockpit detailing is done, well as far as I could go in this stage, more details after painting and completing the side panels and the rest of the cockpit

The cockpit is done as far I could go in this stage, painted, weathered, instrument panels and final detailing will be made after installing this part in to the fuselage and joining of the fuselage halves

Thank you all !

The fuel system is done, painting to come......... The fuselage halves are joined, the cockpit didn't fit so well, some after work had to be done, unfortunately  some details are lost but I have spare ones in Eduard's set so not a big deal..... After the joining I draw a line 2 mm in to the fuselage from the original cut out of the fuel system and this " stripe " is remade from thin styrene, by this I got the look of the fuselage covering plates thickness, and now putty to come...... A lot of putty to come.....

The fuel system completed and the basic color, interior green is on, detailing to come. I painted the air conditioning unit as well and the layer of Surfacer on the fuselage, well I discovered a lot of putty and panels to do, but that's Surfacer is all about......

Well, now, I had working some crazy shifts so didn't have much time for modeing, but now I'm back in the saddle..... I started the inner section of the fuselage, the engine bays. After a bit of research I stumbled on GT Resin intakes and ordered them. I was happy as a tornado in a trailer park, they are molded in white resin with complete intake tunnel and gives extras, among others the complete fan blades of the engine which would be very fine for me since I'm building the engines out of the bird. After opening the package had to discover that everything have great details except the fan blades, they are fine if you built it into the fuselage but in my case trash can..... Scretchbuild......Tough luck....
First I started with the basic structure of the inner fuselage, port side

Only for now my friend, only for now....

More of the fuselage interior structure, the intake had to be installed but first it needed some fine adjustments, more of the structure to come and then I will start detailing

Yes it is, looks like the designers in GT resin actually had a Hasegawa kit and fitted in very good

Thank you friends !

In the meantime a lot of surgery, slow process but it is a process.... To be able to finish the fuselage interior the wheel bay and the air brake had to be done. First the original is removed and replaced with Aires ( wheel bay ) and Eduard ( air brake ). Now here the problems started  air brake is designed for Academy kit so lot of plus work is needed but the result is well wort it. The wheel bay is a bit more tricky, after installing and dry fitting I found out that there is no way to assembly the wing parts. So I removed the original Aires wheel bay " floor " and made a new one ( by looking up to the pictures more accurate as well ) . More to come, stay tuned  :)

A bit of process on this one, a lot of engeneering, measuring, dry fittings, making the same parts over and over again until they fit, etc, etc, etc.... It was a good choice to make one side at the time......However the main construction elements on the starboard side are done, I think the port side will go faster now I know how and what and where...... And offcourse detailing to come

I had a little spare time so I continued with my F-4. First leg of starboard side, as you can see the side is not " mirror image " of structure on the port side, so I had to pay extra attention on details, about 85% done, a little bit more before detailing of both sides, now that will be fun....

Here is some progress, very slow but progress anyway.... Continue to detail the interior but I needed some brake of it so I went rivet counting. First the port side upper wing. It's not well visible on the photos but painting will bring them up more.

Thank you friends !

At first sight the resin intakes fitted well, almost perfect, but when comparing with drawings and photos I founded out it's not. Very not !!! The shape of fuselage changed beyond acceptable so a lot of putty needed to correct it. It's not that big deal considering the putty, but a lot of surface details are gone for good so lot of after work will be needed. Somehow I got the impression that this build will be all about a lot of plus work and not as fun as I thought it will be at the start, but that's it, no turning back

Well, it is on you ;) in past, I sliced kit into pieces and connect it again just to correct length of 0,8 mm (in 1/72 scale). Then I realize if I keep on blueprints and archive photos, I will build just few kits for a whole life. But this is only good way, the same idea of modeling is precise copy of actual object. Hardly we will ever make that, just look at many discusions about painting and markings...
