Recently I was visiting with a friend at work and we spent some time talking about his time as an F-106 mechanic and crew chief. I decided to build a model of his last 49th Fighter Interceptor Squadron Dart, 59-0074, that was his airplane until she was flown to storage in the late eighties. She was eventually refurbished/configured as a QF-106A drone and shot down.

The decals are spot-on for Mike's bird with the exception of the serial number.
More as I get time to work on the project,
Scott

Fastest single engine jet fighter ever!!!
-
This will be excellent work! :-flo :-jump
-
A quick statistic on 59-0074. This airplane was assigned to the 49th FIS in September of 1968 and retired from the same unit in January of 1987. It must have felt like losing a member of the family when the F-106s left Griffis AFB after so many years of service.
-
Between other projects this weekend I got a start on the Dart. Not much, mind you, but the cockpit parts are painted and some trial fitting is going on. Here are the three biggest parts of the model laid out so you can see how Monogram engineered the kit, followed by a picture of how everything is assembled:
I built one of these in the later eighties when the kit was introduced. It seems that the mold (or the machinery) isn't quite as precise as it was twenty-odd years ago. There is a fair amount of flash, especially on the weapons bay and wheelwell parts. It's not that hard to deal with but this definitely isn't a Tamiya-quality model. It'll still build into a very nice model with a little effort.
-
I have never seen this kit before but as I can note it have very good details and hope it is accurate :)
-
:-ok
-
This is a nicely detailed kit, actually. The cockpit and seat look nice after detail painting and a few additions. The weapons bay has all of the main hardware either molded in or as separate parts as do the wheelwells. Monogram molded a couple of optional parts in this kit also. Two sets of weapons bay doors are included, opened and closed. Two different styles of the opening portion of the canopy, the early one with upper central framing and the later blown style.
All in all I recommend the kit. You can build a nice shelf model right out of the box with a little work. My project will be a presentation model for my buddy so I'll be adding a little detail to it. After all, he was the crew chief on the 1/1 version of this particular airplane so he'll remember where everything goes and what it looks like. I must warn you that this is a BIG airplane in 1/48th scale--if you build one it'll take up a lot of space when finished!
-
Can you post some cockpit and seat pics,if you are finished that part of work? :-flo
-
I haven't gotten a start on the real building yet. I did get the grey paint on the cockpit parts last night so I may find a bit of time this week to start detail painting etc. I work evenings and am the chief cook :-danger at our house so I don't do too much building during the week. I'll be certain to post pictures as I go forward.
Scott
-
Hardly wait your progress! :-flo
-
A bit of progress on the Dart. After cleaning up the majority of the extra flash on some of the parts trees the interior green and cockpit grey went on this morning. If you ever build one of these kits don't forget to paint the green on the speedbrake well under the rudder.
-
This will be interesting job to paint all of this details ;)
-
This will be great work!!! :-clap
-
Seems like a nicely moulded thing :-think I believe you'll take most out of it :-ok
-
The kit is both simple and well-designed with regard to the interior sections. The cockpit looks like it could use more detail at first glance, but the 1/1 version wasn't too "busy" either. The moldmakers even did a pretty good job of hiding the ejector pin marks or made them easy to repair.
One item I wish they had made an option is closed speedbrakes. The kit provides both brakes molded to the hinge point--it makes for simple assembly but more work if you wish to close them.

Here I found a photo of 590074, somehow I found it on a 438th FIS "Donald Duck" (in fact redesignated 49th FIS) at Kincheloe AFB, MI, (formerly Kinross AFB), and few other ones,

Thanks, Letipapa! :-ok I actually do have those images but I'm quite glad you posted them for the crew. My friend, Mike, was crew chief on '074 at the time of the flyby pictures and has a large original print of that four-ship hanging at his home.
'074 was delivered from Convair to the 438th FIS in 1960 and then she went on to the 49th inventory in 1968. The 438th moved from Kincheloe to Griffiss AFB just before the change of designation and she stayed at Griffiss until retirement.
-
The cockpit is nearing the stage when I can assemble it to be set aside for later installation into the upper fuselage half. On this model the instrument panel is attached to the fuselage opening and the cockpit tub is glued in afterward.
-
Cockpit looks perfect. :-ok I like it very much! :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap

I really admire this old style kits with a lot of details in relief which is perfect to be painted and decorated by brush :))
-
I really admire this old style kits with a lot of details in relief which is perfect to be painted and decorated by brush :))
I do too. I used the "paint and scrape" method on many of the buttons and gauges of this one since the detail has lots of relief. For those who haven't tried it, simply spray the panels white, let it dry, then spray it again with black. The final step is to carefully scrape or sand the black off of the raised buttons and instruments and the white will start to show. Some red for guarded switches and yellow where needed. The final step is to drop a tiny bit of clear gloss into the guage faces to simulate the lenses. On this panel there are two large screens for the radar and forward scanner and I simply painted the blank screens in gloss black. It wouldn't fly at the competition level, but for this model it will suffice.
-
I also like that way, I use old razor blade for this :))
-
This is my scribing, scraping, paint detailing, fingernail cleaning tool. :-tri I can't remember where it came from but I've had it for most of my modeling life.
-
All in one :-ok
-
The cockpit is now assembled and installed in the top fuselage half. Before I put the cockpit and instrument panel in place I filled/smoothed the seam on the spine of the fuselage and painted the black area under the windscreen.
I also added the wheelwell bulkheads this morning and started to do a bit of detail painting in the gear wells.
-
Very good brush work mate :-ok
-
I like your cockpit work!Looks great! :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
I got up this morning to a rainy, grey, cold day--a perfect excuse for model building. :-clap After brewing coffee I installed the wheelwell bulkheads in the fuselage and assembled the two wing halves together.
Once that was cured I turned it over and added the "engine" barrel to the aft fuselage. The final step was to install the nose gear and wheelwell bulkheads into the forward end.
I need to do a bit of filling/sanding on the wing leading edges and then it'll be time to join the upper and lower halves of the fuselage.
-
This model is very detailed, and you have done great job. :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
The halves are joined together, but I needed three hands to get it done. The fuselage segments fit really, really tightly over the wing but leave some gaps on the forward and aft sections. It's nothing that patience and planning can't overcome, but something to look out for if you ever build one of these kits. The seams close up pretty well so long as you keep them lined up while the glue cures. I used a combination of CA and regular adhesive to get everything joined up.
Now the intakes must be pre-painted with ADC grey paint (I forgot that detail.... :-roll) prior to assembling them to the airframe.
-
Well, about the details you know better, from my point of view this look so nice :-ok
-
Today's installment is glueing the intakes onto the fuselage. They don't fit perfectly so require a good bit of filling and sanding. The top portion of the intakes and the refueling receptacle all come together on the spine and this requires a bit of right-angle sanding. The wing joins the bottom of the intakes and also requires some frustrating filling. This went on for most of the evening....... :-wall I'll prime it tomorrow morning to see if my problems are solved.
-
Filling and sanding, and filling and sanding... that is what I am doing to this days. Painful but necessary job :( :) :-wave
-
Filling and sanding, and filling and sanding... that is what I am doing to this days. Painful but necessary job :( :) :-wave
Any plans to complete something?
-
Look, I somehow started to continue with that Ju-188. I re scribed it, as you know, but on some places it was shallow and after filling and sanding some lines and circles became very hard visible. So, again, and again... but I am going to do it until it becomes wright. :)
I'm just thinking to post some photos (nothing special), just to reactivate the theme. ;) :-wave
-
No problem at all. Do as you want
-
Unblievible - I didn't put taht Ju-188 build here at all :-eek :-eek, and I thought I did. (in fact it was on Burek forum). I am completely lost :-eek :-help :-green
Scott, sorry for this off-topic. :-wave
-
No problem and don't bother your self about your build or any other.
-
Yes, don't worry about hijacking, and I see you started the new thread for the Ju 188, Letipapa! Great looking airplane, in my opinion, but I have a soft spot for all bombers! We will follow your progress.
Filling and sanding multiple times can sometimes be boring but the end result is always worth the work. A perfect surface is extremely important on this F-106 since it will be in a very shiny Air Defense Command grey scheme. The 49th FIS kept their airplanes very clean and detailed right up to the time they flew them to Davis Monthan for storage. Mike, the friend who was crew chief on my subject, has mentioned how he and his crew wiped the airplane down and washed it from time to time.
-
Just a little update on the Dart. All of the filling/sanding/filling/sanding/priming is done now and it's ready for the ADC grey paint. Unfortunately, I paint in my garage and the wind has been VERY strong all weekend and won't calm down until later this week. Even with everything swept and clean and the door closed, dust still gets into the air inside the "paint booth" when the wind blows hard. So.......both the F-106 and Corsair will have to wait a few days for calmer air. Maybe I'll do something to the airplane in the background of this shot while I wait.... :-think
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_6660.jpg)
Scott
-
Full desk of work!!!
-
I can't wait continue of this work!
-
This morning I shot the underside paint on the Dart. This model has so much surface area that I decided it would be easier to paint it in two sessions, first the bottom, then the top. Perhaps by Sunday it'll be cured enough to shoot the upper surfaces. I must first fit the windscreen assembly so I can correct any fit issues.
-
I am impressed with the kit structure, Monogram was among the best in this method of detailing ;)
-
I'll take a photo of the weapons bay and main gear wells tomorrow. There is a lot of detail molded into them and it doesn't take much work at all to have an accurate representation of the real thing. I very rarely add any ordnance to my models but I'm going to install all five missiles in this project as they are quite nice.
-
:-eek :-eek Details... :-eek :-eek
Hardly wait to see more progress! :-ok :-clap :-clap
-
Here are two photos of the weapons bay and gear wells that show all the detail. All that is needed is paint.
The missiles need to be cleaned up and painted but I placed them in their launchers so y'all could see how they fit in there.

Hardly wait to see more! :-flo

Finally, after a dropped/broken airbrush bottle yesterday :-wall :-wall, the ADC grey paint is applied. The next step will be the black nose and several flush antenna/radar panels on the belly.

Have you find another bottle?
-
I had to make a stop at the hobby shop on my way to work yesterday. I now have a couple of spare bottles!
-
Looks great. What color did you used for the overall gray?
-
Very, very nice..I like it much! :-clap :-clap :-clap
I'm glad to see that you work a little bit more this days on models! :-flo :-tri :-tri :-clap
-
Looks great. What color did you used for the overall gray?
Model Master FS 16473 "aircraft grey". It is the actual Air Defense Command color used on the F-106 through its life.
As an aside, somewhere in my piles of reference material I have the official Tech Order for USAF tropical (Vietnam-style) camouflage for the Dart. Supposedly there was a squadron of Darts slated to be rotated into S.E. Asia but it never happened. The F-102s looked quite nice in camouflage!
-
ADC Grey or Coin Grey ;)
-

I usually get time to work on models only on Saturday and Sunday evenings. The weather was so nice yesterday and today I just had to paint the F-106. Now my lawn is getting scruffy looking and our garden (we're eating radishes from it already) is taking more time, but I'm still trying to fit some modeling in during my morning coffee!
-
The level of details in those wells is great - also you did a pretty good job in accentuating it :-ok
Speaking of colour, at first I thought I'm seeing bare plastics :-think not that I don't like it, and you did good job in painting it, it's just too dull for my taste :-roll
-

All I really did to the weapons bay and wheelwells was a light wash of dirty black and painted the various AN fittings and Adel clamps. About the only other enhancement was to drill out some holes in two air deflectors in the missile bay.
The ADC grey is just a little lighter than the kit plastic and it was almost hard to see where the first light dusting of paint was when I sprayed it! These overall grey Air Defense interceptors are pretty boring, indeed. It'll look a bit better with the markings applied but the 49th didn't have a "sexy" tail marking like a couple of the F-106 units had. Honestly, I'm thinking about building another one for my own collection but weathered and painted like the drones expended in Florida.
-
Tnaks a lot.I have the same beast but in 1:72 in the quee.If only I could find some decals for the SEA camoed one it would be great :)

If you were to paint a Dart in a (hypothetical) tactical scheme I suppose you could use the F-102 scheme as a basis.
The USAF thought about using the '106 in a Migcap/topcover role but it didn't have an internal cannon. As I recall, this idea led to fitting a Vulcan gun in the missile bay. The clear view canopy without a center spine also came from this investigation.
-
Ok.Thanks again this is too much modification for my taste.I will do a Overall gray scheme. It could be also good for trying out the salt weathering technique :)
-
The 106s didn't have much in the way of weathering or scratches--they were among the most pampered airplanes in the USAF fleet. Every one I ever saw when they were operational was nearly spotless. Here's a great compilation of photos!
http://www.f-106deltadart.com/home.htm
There are some pictures in this collection of the drones, and other ships just pulled out of storage at Davis Monthan, that are faded and worn appearing.
-
Thanks. This will be very helpfull when I decide to build mine :) I was thinking of a f-100D before that :P
-

I'll try to find some photos of the cannon installation for you. It should be a straightforward thing to build if you did decide to do the camouflage version.
-
First decal went on this evening. I can't find my decal setting solution anywhere :-wall so I'm going to hold off until I resupply.
-
If the surface is gloss, maybe no need for decal setting solution?
-
If I see correctly, there are recessed panels, so decal setting solution sounds a real need for the decal to be perfectly fitted...
-
Ohohoh...Nice mate! :-clap
-
Alcohol vinegar?
-
Alcohol vinegar?
Yes, I think it's a good solution... Perheaps slightly diluted into water?
-
I think no need for that.
-
If I see correctly, there are recessed panels, so decal setting solution sounds a real need for the decal to be perfectly fitted...
Monogram accurately molded a seam down the length of the external tanks. I tried the decal on this tank to see if there would be any problem. I'll need to use setting solution to get the results I want--it didn't lay down very tightly. Not a big problem to wait for some Microsol and Microset as I have the other projects going anyway.
I may try the alcohol/vinegar method. What ratio should I mix them? 1/1 or ?
-
Just pure vinegar. Sorry for term but we have here different type of vinegar- alcohol vinegar, apple vinegar (wild apple is best), vine vinegar, artichoke vinegar...
-
Ah yes...... our stores stock "white" and "cider" vinegar. I'll give it a try!
-
I did not know that- thank you ;)
-
I dabbed on some of the white vinegar and the decal is reacting exactly as it would have with Microsol. I realized when I opened the vinegar bottle that it even smells pretty similar. :-think
Thanks, No.1, for the tip!
-
I am glad for that mate :))
-
More progress. I used BareMetal foil to trim the inlet openings, sprayed Metalizer on the aft fuselage ring and refueling receptacle. Then a start on the decals.
I thought that I'd researched the airplane and decals pretty thoroughly, but I just found that I haven't got the correct Tactical Air Command badges for either side of the vertical. The 49th FIS became part of TAC during one of the reshufflings of USAF commands and the older style badges on my sheet are the wrong ones. It'll take some digging in unbuilt models to find what I'm needing, I suppose.......
-
Excellent!!!
-
Wonderful!! :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap
I like it much!! :-love
-
Nice progress :-ok
-
Looks great :-clap
-
I like it :)
-
Left side decals completed:
There is still a LOT left to do on this one. I haven't even started on the main landing gear or the missiles.
-
Nice!
-
Now the another side :) (like on ZZ-Top vinyl albums 'this side- other side')
-
Bravo! :-clap I can't wait to see more! :-clap
-
The crew chief of '074 showed me some really nice air-to-air photos the other day. One of them is of a four-ship echelon and two of the airplanes my friend worked on are in the flight. It turns out that the photos were taken by Keith Ferris when he was researching an F-106 painting.
I was searching for unrelated treasure in the shop yesterday and found my first F-106 that I built just after the kit was first released. I'm going to inventory it for missing parts, and if everything is there I'm going to rebuild it as a QF-106 drone. It should be fun!
-
Oho...One more F-106.That's nice! :-jump
Was QF-106 paint in red-white scheme?
-
They simply painted the bright orange/red on the tail and wingtips over the last markings the airplanes carried in active service. There are many photos here of the drones: http://www.f-106deltadart.com/drones.htm
I don't yet know which ship I'll build from these, but they're all rather neat looking. We took the guided tour through the AMARC storage facility in Arizona in the spring of 1988 and saw almost the whole F-106 fleet in mothballs.
-
Missiles......:

I can not explain to you how much i liked this project, and your work. :-love :-love
Beautiful! :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Well done, Scott!
-
Genie nukes?
-
Thanks for the continued interest!
Genie nukes?
Yes, I decided to load the "live" Genie into the weapons bay. I asked my buddy whether he was ever around a fully operational Genie and he said that they loaded one in his airplane a few times. LOTS of security around the airplane when the active nuke was loaded by the ordnance crew!
-
Finally I got a chance to start assembling the weapons bay area tonight along with the landing gear and doors. Once the glue on the gear sets completely it'll be ready for final assembly.
-
Look like real and almost danger with all of this ordnance ;)
-
You see light in the end of tunnel! ;)
Looks great! :-clap
-
I like it!!!
-
I like it!!!
+1

The Dart is up on its gear with the external tanks and speedbrakes installed. About all that remains is to install the radome, canopy, and a few small details. I've run out of space on the workbench so I took this picture in the "satellite" room! :-blah
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_7194.jpg)

So last moment to adopt satellite room into- work room :))

Your Delta Dart is really nice, Scott!

Your Dart is splendid mate, congratulations!!!
-
Look great for me and hope your friend will also enjoy in this kit :-ok
-
Greaaat!!! :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Very nice work. :-clap
Maybe some weathering would do him good :-ok
-
My crew chief friend wouldn't be very happy if I weathered his airplane--he and his helper kept the paint in almost as-new finish right up to the day it was flown to Davis Monthan for storage! He told me that the 49th was VERY particular about keeping their ancient warriors looking good so the rest of the Air Force could admire their 1950s technology.
-
Wonderful job Scott :-obey :-clap :-clap :-clap I like when somebody is keeping machine in a perfect looking condition. That is an effort to respect. :-ok :-salut
-
The finale to this build happened today after work. As a Christmas gift I presented the F-106 to my friend, Mike, who was crew chief on the 1/1 version of this airplane with the 49th FIS.
-
Awesome! What a cool thing to do :-ok It makes the build that much more special.
Ernie
-
Yep, giving someone "their" airplane in miniature is one of the greatest feelings in modeling, at least in my opinion. My first presentation was to a friend and customer of mine who'd flown 35 missions in a Flying Fortress. His eyes became moist when I gave it to him. It was a wonderful sensation to see his reaction.
-
Nice event and I like to see happy face of your friend :)
-
Isn't this wonderful moment? :-flo Very nice story!! Just look at his face, nothing else isn't important!! :-flo
-
Great!
-
I've been commissioned to build another 1/48 F-106, this time to be displayed "in flight". This will be in the same colors as the one I built for my friend, 49th FIS, but as aircraft 59-0083. This will be so very simple since there is virtually no work to do!. I did find that closing the landing gear doors is something of a chore as they are not designed to be closed as molded. Nothing that the razor saw, Dremel tool, and some glue can't handle.
The receptacle for the desk stand is installed into the access panel for the Ram Air Turbine between the weapons bay and main gear doors, right in the most sturdy part of the fuselage. I haven't built an in-flight model since I was a small boy, and painting the pilot will be tasking my skills, too!!!
-
This will be real relax for you mate :)
-
Indeed, I did a lot of the work in about an hour. The only really detailed part will be the cockpit and pilot, and even that is hard to see with the canopy closed. There isn't a deadline on this so it might take a few weeks to finish.
-
Great!! :-clap Go ahead mate!! :-jump :-clap
-
So, a small update on this Dart. The major part of the airplane is now ready for primer day. The ejection seat and pilot are still being painted and fitted on another corner of the workbench.
-
:-ok
-
Very close to painting and you are so fast!
-
Look good! :-clap :-ok
-
Primer day here......with numerous projects.

-
:-ok
-
Heeeeyyyy :)) :-clap :-ok
-
Cool! :-clap
-
Here are a couple of small steps, painting the seat and pilot. He's not extremely detailed since there will be a canopy enclosing him.....
-
Very skilled work mate ;)
-
Looks good. :-clap
-
Once some lines are re-scribed this will be prepped for the high-gloss ADC grey paint. Probably later this week will see an update. :-flo
-
Grey paint applied and drying now. Boy, these 1/48 jet fighters are too large....!
-
Largest and fastest single engined fighter ever!!!
-
Hugeeee and nice!! :-clap
-
Time for concentration on decal application of this F-106:

This ADC Grey is possibly best grey color you can see on airplane :-ok

The "in-flight" Convair is now finished except for the appropriate base. I'll hand this over to the new owner in the next few days and he is planning the display fixture.

Well, this project hasn't yet been finished until today. I ended up fabricating the display base, complete with a 49th FIS uniform patch. I will present the model this week to the new owner, the crew chief on 59-0083 in the 1980s. Incidentally, this particular F-106 served a long, eventful career with only two squadrons. It ended up being converted to the drone configuration and was shot down on 18 May, 1993 by an AIM-120 AMRAAM missile.

Look great on stand and logo :-ok
-
Splendid, and the presentation is dynamic!
-
The owner wanted a simple base, so we found a block of aluminum and buffed it, then used a long drill bit for the attaching post. He actually provided the shoulder patch from his USAF momentos.
-
Great job on both! I had to start the thread from the beginning, I didn't realize you had built two of them. Did either of the recipients know that they were getting the models or see pictures of them before the hand over? The element of surprise is a great thing! I've found that I get attached to them while building though and it's hard to give them away when the time comes.
-
Yep both models were known by the owner, who happens to be the same guy! He wanted an "in-flight" of 083 which was his final 106 before he left the Air Force. The 49th retired the Darts not too long after he departed.
I don't get too attached to the models if I know they're being built on commission or for a friend. I reckon that comes from the models I've built on commission during my stock car building days. I did build a B-17 for a good friend, and customer of mine, years ago that I didn't want to part with until I saw his face the day he got it. He and I had visited about WWII and he mentioned that he was a Fortress pilot. I worked with his daughter to get some pictures he had and I built his airplane. Presenting it to him was a total surprise to him and it was a great experience.
-
I handed over the F-106 today to it's new owner. I also let slip the fact that a two-seat F-106B conversion can be accomplished and I may have to build one of those for him, also. Seems that he was assigned to a two-seater at one time.....
-
I hope that new owner is happy with model ;)
-
Yes, he's very happy with the new one. He also brought the first one back to me for some repair work today after he let a friend break some small parts off. Not a big job but I reckon it could be called "warranty work"!
-
Hahaha :)) Great :-ok
-
No need to start a new thread for this one, as I mentioned it at the start of this story........
Here's the old F-106 I built in the early eighties just after Monogram introduced it. It's been sitting in my "to do" box for rebuilding quite a long time and yesterday evening the reconstruction started--with disassembly!
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF033/IMG_2868_zpsrjwoztem.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF033/IMG_2868_zpsrjwoztem.jpg.html)
It took a little extra time searching for some of the small parts that had gotten separated from the main airframe. I'm still lacking a couple of landing gear struts but I might source them from the SAC landing gear set I have.
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF033/IMG_2869_zpsltcngexd.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF033/IMG_2869_zpsltcngexd.jpg.html)
After disassembly it was time for paint stripping, and this was HARD work compared to most. The ADC grey really required much work and several coats of oven cleaner before it came free:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/2AF035/IMG_2870_zps5u9ahmjo.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/2AF035/IMG_2870_zps5u9ahmjo.jpg.html)
After lots of stripping and scraping the parts went back together and filler could be applied once again:

I like it, in your hands, all kits will be like new :-ok
-
Wow ! Great job !
-
I'm quickly running out of these old builds--only one F-101B and the P-61 still in the queue.

Red shadow ;)

Yep, this one will be finished as a QF-106A drone. In fact, it will represent 59-0083 that I built for my friend earlier in this thread (the in-flight machine). When the 49th FIS was disbanded most of their airplanes were flown to Davis Monthan for storage and many of them were later converted to drones and expended in weapons testing.
-
this will be nice, keep up the good work !
-
Thanks!
The former crew chief of 083 isn't quite as excited about me building his old airplane as a drone--it was his first airplane when he was assigned to the 49th. He's told me (several times) that when he got the airplane it was looking dirty and needed painting. He got permission to sand and prepare the entire airplane and then the paint department resprayed the machine for him. The photos of it at the end of its service life (and as a drone) all show his paint job. Understandably he wasn't too happy to find that 083 ended up in the Gulf of Mexico, shot down by the USAF!!!!

Great to see build with back up story behind :-ok :-clap

I've spent a good amount of time looking through the spares boxes for the landing gear parts for this Dart. It seems I've used some linkages in other projects over the years (this was taken apart when we moved in 1988) so it was time to move to an alternate solution--a set of SAC landing gear. These are for the Trumpeter kit but will easily be adaptable to the old Monogram kit:

Also the Air Defense Command grey found its way onto the airframe:

-
Goood :-clap
-
very nice !
-
Thanks, friends!
I've assembled the SAC main landing gears and painted them. These are actually for the Trumpeter kit but will only require me to drill a couple of holes in the Monogram wing structure for them to fit. The old kit nose gear is still fixed into the bay so it has been repainted and will continue to serve:

Very precise cast!!
-
Excellent item!
-
superb !

Now that the grey has had time to fully dry the tailcone got a coat of Metalizer and the nose received the distinctive black radome and anti-glare panel:

-
You need much skill to mask tight to the probe on nose side
-
Tamiya tape!!! :-obey
-
The masking wasnt simple on this one for sure, well done
-
Last night the new SAC main landing gear assemblies were installed, and it fits so easily. I merely drilled a pair of holes in the Monogram wheelwells to accept the Trumpeter/SAC locating pins and used CA glue. Alignment was easy and the side struts and retract actuators fit just great!

Further work on the drone paint scheme is ongoing:

White shading on panels?
-
Yes, or rather a remnant from storage. These airplanes were all sent to Davis Monthan AFB for storage and brought out of storage to drone them. The refurbished airplanes were badly faded and with lots of traces of the Spraylat sealer still showing.
-
Great!!!
-
looks great !

Thanks! :-flo
This one is finished but the photos are having trouble. Pictures later....... :-kr

Troubles... :-dal :-wall

That looks pretty interesting....not such a bad replica!

Model shop in Italy ;)

I like the idea for certain!!
Here is the finished QF-106A, serial 59-0083. This airplane had a rather interesting history as the wings were badly damaged at Red Flag 1978 and a rebuilt set of wings was installed later. Then it went back to the 49th FIS where my friend was assigned to it for a time. In February of 1984 the airplane was retired to Davis Monthan for storage, then reactivated and converted to a drone in April of 1991. The final flight was on 18 May 1993 when an AIM-120 shot it down on the Florida test range.

One more old build reconstructed....... ;)

Again nice piece of history :-ok
-
:-ok
-
excellent mate,excellent !
-
Thank you!
There is more to this old airplane than meets the eye....... This machine was used for bombing trials in it's early life and it was severely stressed with high G-loading. The wings were damaged so badly that the airplane was trucked to McClellan AFB (heavy maintenance facility for the F-106) and a wing swap was performed. When 083 eventually was assigned to my buddy, Mike, at the 49th FIS he asked for and received permission to sand the entire airframe and have the paint department repaint it. After that he kept it sparkling clean for as long as he was crew chief. I reckon the paint on it the day it was shot down was still the same paint job that Mike was responsible for.
As an aside, I don't think my friend was all that happy to see me depict his airplane during its drone service, but as I told him--the airplane still exists as pieces on the bottom of the sea!
