Title: Eduard 1/48 Yak-3 week-end
Post by: draken35 on June 22, 2019, 10:09:35 AM
Something lighter than what I build actually... Will be built from the box as a recreation but also to test the new range of AK Real Colors: My preferred paints are Gunze ones but actually it becomes difficult to find all the references here in Belgium. So, having seen the new AK Real Colors (also a laquer paint, like Gunze or Tamiya) I want to give it a try. And there are cheaper than the Japanese import products...

As well I have original samples of this colors (somewhere stored), note that colors are black grey and mid dark blue grey.

Those paints look nice; to be tested quickly...
I've bought a set for WWII Soviet fighters end of the war. Have also bought other sets: Belgian Aircrafts 1970-1990 & 1990-2000's.

All the parts of the Yak are removed from sprue and half wings glued together

Sounds like a good testing platform, and I always like looking at Yak fighters!!!!

Little work before to begin with the base paint: removing the parts from the sprues, a little bit of putty needed...

Having some time this afternoon, I've tried the AK Real Colors.
Here are the paints I will use for my Yak. I started with the PC319 Interior Steel Gray.
I diluted the paint with AK thinner for real Colors at a rate of 50/50 and airbrushed with my Evolution.

...Well guys, it was a real pleasure!!!
Paint is very nice, comes homogeneously, no "blotches", thin, fast drying and the airbrush wasn't obturated by the paint at all.
For a first try, I'm really happy.

...The only thing is that I 've forgotten to paint the canopy frame  :))
Mistake will be corrected soon ;)

I have made a little bit of weathering; then I used for the first time "Future" as gloss varnish - a bottle bought some years ago during an expo; never used until today... Easy to use (no dilution needed) and good result. Better than Pébéo varnish when weather is hot as actually...  :))
After that Tamiya black Panel Liner and, for the instrument panel, use of the decal furnished on the decal sheet by Eduard

Putty was used then sanded and the wheel traps are repainted because my use of Tamiya panel liner was not good at all at this location...

Thank you  :))

Today, I first have airbrushed Future on the wheel traps. Then I've airbrushed Tamiya Flat white as a primer for the part of the under fuselage that will be covered by the radiator.
Then I have Airbrushed AK Real Color RC316 (AMT-7 Light Blue): I confirm that the use of those paints is a pleasure!

And finally I've changed my mind and will build the aircraft of Marcel Albert (from Normadie Niemen); so the propeller bosse have to be painted in red/wkite/blue...

Interesting idea for partially use of flat white primer
I decided to proceed in such a way because I think that a little bit of putty will be needed...

Radiator is in place now. I have also weathered a little bit the wheel bays (that must receive matt varnish) and painted and weathered the propeller bosse...

After masking phase, AMT-11 blue Grey is airbrushed. AK Real Colors are drying very fast, but I prefer to wait one day or two before to mask for next phase...

After masking phase, AMT-12 Dark Grey was airbrushed today. AK Real Colors are still of easy use and there were quickly dry. After 1/4 hour I removed the masks without any problem...

I've tested new (at least for me) products: for the wash, Flory Models. You apply generously the wash on the kit; let dry 15-20 minutes; then you remove the product with a humid shovel. Product remains on the interpanels.
Good one, but to remove all the excess you have sometimes to start the process again and I've constated that the Pébéo varnish is somewhat fragile (not the first time I see that but this time it was really annoying).

I've also tested AK Aluminium pencil: great! Easy to use and excellent rendering; better than with paint and paintbrush.

Then I've airbrushed matt varnish. Trying to correct an excess of varnish, I've also had problems: varnish was removing ("peeling") from the kit (not visible on the photo; just under the cockpit port side around the number 6)...

So, I've decidde to finish the kit without more weathering. I think I will use AK Real Color varnishes in the future...

Well, anyway the most important thing was that I've built that kit to test AK Real Colors and, on this point, it's successful! I'm really pleased by that new gamma of paints  :-love
